Michael Clarke has been appointed Australian cricket captain with Shane Watson as his deputy.

Clarke will lead the Test and one-day international teams, with Cameron White of Victoria the captain of the Twenty20 national side.

Watson will be deputy in all three forms of the game.
Clarke, who turns 30 on Saturday, succeeds Ricky Ponting who stood down as captain on yesterday.
Clarke will lead the Australian one-day team to Bangladesh next month while his first Test tour as skipper will be to Sri Lanka in August.
Clarke has already had a taste of Test leadership after standing in as makeshift captain for Ponting in the fifth Ashes Test in January when Australia lost the series 3-1.
The NSW right-hander has played 69 Tests, scoring 4742 runs at an average of 46.49
Clarke has also captained Australia in 24 ODIs and led the team to the final of the World Twenty20 Championship in 2010. Clarke stood down from the Twenty20 captaincy at the end of the Ashes series.
Former captain Ponting has been selected in the squad to tour Bangladesh next month.

AUSTRALIAN SQUAD TO TOUR BANGLADESH
Michael Clarke, Shane Watson, Xavier Doherty, Callum Ferguson, Brad Haddin, John Hastings, Mike Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Brett Lee, Tim Paine, James Pattinson, Ricky Ponting, Steve Smith, Cameron White

Geez that squad is a shocker, we will gain nothing out of the series apart from the expected series win.

Sunshine Vice Captain

Bit surprised to see White get another tour of the sub continent after so many failures over there but also good to see Pattinson get a run.

I just saw the press conference on Fox and every time I see Hildich open his mouth I just wanna throw up, geez he talks some sh*t.

I actually don't mind the squad, for the most part...Ferguson, Pattinson and Paine (and even Hastings) are all good inclusions looking to the future. Doherty probably should make way for O'Keefe or even Krezja, but after the way they dumped Krezja for one shoddy performance it's nice to see them giving the bloke a chance at least (and he's a good OD bowler). Puzzled to see White there, he offers nothing at all. Overall it's not a terrible squad tbh, although it could be improved.

Anyway, happy to see Clarke get the nod even if it was expected. He's a good tactical skipper who's not afraid of upsetting the fragile egos of his team, from what he's shown so far, no world beater but a good bloke to take us through a rebuilding stage. Watson with the VC is a surpise, but a pleasant one

I really hope Watson never gets the reigns. Although he is a stellar performer more recently, the guy has had serious attitude problems in the past and his body language on the field is terrible. Good player, not good leadership material. I'm assuming he's only there because he's the other long term player, however Hussey or Haddin would have been a better choice IMO.

I agree with Watson's body language issues, but I think it'll be interesting to see how he takes on the role...it might be the thing that makes him a better player and leader if he handles it properly

Captain Victorian should consider himself very lucky. Our ODI batting stocks are quite thin especially in regards to youngsters

Don't really see the point of Punter going over, they should have rested him and let Clarke have his first tour without Punter in the team. Not enough youth IMO.

according to the Fox Sports commentators, Doherty was the incumbent but was injured and now he is over his injury he gets his spot back

Krazy did nothing in India to suggest he should be retained imo

Do the selectors even talk with the physios? Doherty played 6 games including two finals during our WC campaign. He should have been over at the WC over Krejza.

so, hypethertically speaking, if Clarke breaks down injured for example say vs South africa test series or series vs India at home, can we assume Sunshine will be the captain?

It'd be strange appointing him vice-captain if this wasn't the case.
