Hodgson Titans’ latest recruit

Michael Hodgson became the latest Titans signing, agreeing to a 2 year contract with the NRL’s newest club today.

The front row / second row player has been with Canberra since 2000 after coming through the ranks as a Parramatta Junior and playing his first two seasons in first grade with that club.

Hodgson said, “I have been impressed with the way the club has been portrayed in the media in that it is very professional and organised. My wife Sally and I are genuinely excited about the move for us and our daughter Neve and it is even more attractive being a new club. It will be a great place to train and play – waking this morning to minus 3 certainly reinforced that.”

Coach John Cartwright believes the signing is another crucial move in the formulation of the fledgling club’s forward pack.

Cartwright said, “As with all of our signings, Michael fits the mould 100% on and off the field. He’s a big reason why the Raiders are having more success this season. He has got great go-forward, he’s a solid defender and he’s closing in on 100 first grade games which is when front rowers start to play their best football.”

Gold Coast Titans signings to date:

Forwards: Michael Hodgson (Raiders) Frank Puletua (Panthers) Luke Bailey (Dragons) Anthony Laffranchi (Tigers) Luke Swain (Panthers) Brad Meyers (Bradford) Nathan Friend (Storm) Luke O’Dwyer (Eels)

Backs Preston Campbell (Panthers) Brian Carney (Newcastle) Matt Petersen (Eels) Scott Prince (Tigers) Richie Mathers (Rhinos) Josh Graham (Western Force)

He`s a good player. Not sure how much more room the Titans are going to have, but they have the core of a really, really good team.

It'd be nice to see a few more Queenslanders in the side, or a few from the Northern Rivers. The whole point of having a third Qld side in the NRL is to give more Queenslanders a shot in first grade. Of course there's only so many Queenslanders available but hopefully within two or three years the majority of players at the Titans will be Gold Coast/Nthn Rivers locals or at least from Qld.

No I want Queenslanders. There are a few in the NRl don't you know.

Apart from anything there will be Qld Cup players in the Titans squad next year and a lot of them will turn into very good first graders. Adam Mogg played four or five years on Qld Cup before he was signed.

The Gold Coast Titans recruiting policy heading in to our debute season will simply be to sign our Top 25 players who will all largely have NRL (or comparable e.g. Super League) experience. We are going to have a squad of 35 players training with the team which will provide a great opportunity for those playing for our feeder clubs Burleigh, Tweed Heads and Ipswich.

This from the Big League magazine;

Head Coach John Cartwright wants the inaugral top 25 to all have top-level experience but has not ruled out drafting players from the Queensland Cup feeder teams of Ipswich, Burleigh or Tweed Heads or even elite youth players from the area.
In closing, Carty is quoted as saying "We may keep a hanful of places up our sleeve for players who come in to form towards the end of the year, but it's no surprise we'll be ready to push hard come July 1.

"We want to be competitive from day one, so I'd day the top 25 will be full of players with NRL experience, but like most clubs we'll have towards 35 players training with us, so there be plenty of opportunities for young talent and Queensland Cup players to push through."

In the modern era whether it be now or in two to three years time, it is IMO unrealistic to expect our club to be a team comprising only players from Queensland, Gold Coast and/or the Northern Rivers region. Whilst that would be the ideal and something we would work towards, like has happened in Newcastle, like has happened in North Queensland, we will most likely be a team made up players from different states and/or countries. The Elite Academy and our committment to our juniors in our catchment areas will always be a priority in order to give locals the opportunity to fulfill their NRL dream.

GOALS

A key objective of the Gold Coast Titans is to support junior rugby league in South East Queensland and Northern New South Wales, and provide a direct pathway for all players who wish to pursue a career in Rugby League. It is of the upmost importance that the Gold Coast Titans have a strong presence within the local competitions and schools in and around the immediate regions of the Gold Coast and Northern NSW and offer support and resources.

It is not only the junior players and the young adults of our game but also the coaches who give countless hours to develop our future in Rugby League, it is these coaches we must also educate and offer a corridor of opportunity to further their knowledge of our great game.

ONGOING PROGRAM

The Gold Coast Titans will soon have cemented two key positions within the organisation, those of the Head of junior Recruitment and Development Manager. Both will be responsible for the Rugby League development programs and the participation within our junior systems. These programs will assist in the identification of Queensland’s and New South Wales’ most promising young juniors - players that may eventually go on to play for the Gold Coast Titans. The grassroots of our game are what builds a club’s success both in the short and long term.

When these positions have been appointed, all schools and junior clubs will benefit from the input and commitment of the Gold Coast Titans to Junior Development.

It's fair enough signing 25 players from where ever they can get them with around 18-20 being from NSW, England or NZ but if they're signing them for two or three years (or more) it'll be three years or so before there is any major turnover of players. Most NRL clubs have a handful of players coming off contract every year but the GC won't have any at the end of 2007 and only a few at the end of 2008. Hopefully they will still give some young Queenslanders a chance during that time though.

My original post has been added too.

I see your point though the 10 players identified as potential contributors to the team from 2007 will be training with the team this pre-season with some spots left open for those who impress early in 2007. These players will be from our feeder clubs and the Elite Academy team.

I believe it is important to remember we have had to keep one eye on the now, one eye on the future when it comes to recruitment. Your ideal is achievable though we would be looking a decade down the track for mine. We have had to adopt an aggressive 'get players who will contribute' to ensure we are competitive from day one policy that fit in with the culture we are trying to build. To date we have done that Queenslander or not.
