Miller to partner Marshall in halves

AFTER rejecting approaches from rival NRL and Super League clubs, boom Wests Tigers halfback Jacob Miller is set to get the chance to partner Benji Marshall in the halves.
New Tigers coach Mick Potter said he was yet to decide whether Miller or veteran recruit Braith Anasta would start the season at halfback, but he confirmed Marshall would revert to his favoured five-eighth role.
Former coach Tim Sheens's decision to switch Marshall to halfback and sign Anasta as a five-eighth is understood to have left Miller frustrated about his future at the club and he had been linked to Parramatta, Hull FC and Gold Coast.
But Potter said the Tigers under 20s premiership-winning captain, who played five NRL matches in 2011, was being considered at halfback and Anasta may move to lock.

''Benji is a proven five-eighth, so I would imagine that is where he is going to start the year,'' Potter said.
''Whether that means Braith plays lock and Jacob Miller plays halfback, or Braith plays halfback and Liam Fulton or Adam Blair plays lock, I am not sure.
''I watched the under 20s grand final and I thought Jacob Miller was very handy in that game.
''There is a multitude of options and, at stages during the year, we may need those options.''
Before Potter's appointment on October 24, there had also been speculation about Blake Ayshford's future at the Tigers but the Super League coach of the year said the 24-year-old centre was in his plans for next season.
''I am very happy with the squad that is here,'' Potter said.
''Blake Ayshford and Chris Lawrence are both good centres. The first week of training has been good, the players have been very responsive and very willing. They are all relatively fit and they all want to improve, which is ultimately what we want them to do.''
Another key position yet to be determined is fullback, with Tim Moltzen wanting to settle into the No.1 jersey rather than playing a utility role and James Tedesco returning to action after a knee reconstruction.
Potter said both would be given a chance to stake a claim to the fullback role and indicated that positions on the wing may also be up for grabs.
''James Tedesco has been looking very good at pre-season training and there are some big wraps on him,'' Potter said.
''It was unfortunate in the season just gone for Wests Tigers that he got injured in the first game, because there are some people who say he is going to be a very good fullback. We will get a chance to find that out.
''Tim can possibly play on the edge for you, he can play fullback and at a pinch you could throw him in the halves if you needed to. I think he wants to have a crack at fullback so we will see how he goes early on.''
Curtis Sironen is another player whose best position has not yet been determined and Potter said he would wait until he recovers from a shoulder reconstruction before deciding where to play the 19-year-old.
''At the moment he can't do any contact but he looks very likely and with the skill he has got he can probably play a couple of positions,'' he said.
Potter, who has coached for seven years at Catalans, St Helens and Bradford, described the first week of training at the Tigers as ''steady'' but warned the players it would get harder.
''I wouldn't say it has been an impossible week for them. We are just building them up as we go so,'' he said.
At some stage the training will be difficult and I would say more often that not it will be difficult, but I don't think you want overuse injuries in the first week.
''This week has been solid and then next week and the week after we will build it up.''

Anasta announces that he's not keen on being a halfback

Braith Anasta, one of the most respected and experienced players in the NRL, says he has no problems over which position he plays in next season.
“I don’t care where I play. I’ve played five-eighth for most of my career but I’m at a different stage of my career now. I just want to play footy and do what’s best for the team. That’s what I have always been about,’’ Anasta said.
“Working with Robbie Farah and Benji Marshall excites me. I like to play off the cuff. That’s when I’m playing at my best. I play what I see. They are the best two at that in the comp so it suits my game.
“Tim Sheens was talking about me playing 7. I’m not a 7. He had a role for me in 7. It wasn’t the average 7. I’m happy to play wherever Mick Potter feels is the best fit for the team.”

I predicted this elsewhere, but next year is looking like:

1) Tedesco (Moltzen if he's unfit)
2) Tuqiri
3) Ayshford
4) Lawrence
5) Koroibete
6) Marshall
7) Miller
8) Woods
9) Farah
10) Galloway
11) Fulton
12) Blair
13) Anasta

14) Moltzen (Thompson if there's no Tedesco)
15) Pettybourne
16) Bell
17) Murdoch-Masila

Forward cover: Fotuaika, Buchanan, Groat, Vela
Back cover: Utai, Nofoaluma, Sironen, Iosefa, Reddy, Simona, Rowe

Looks pretty damn good to me. Perhaps a little light on in the back row. Should be fine though if Bliar rolls his socks up.

From all reports I'm hearing that Tedesco will be ready to start in the Number 1 jersey. It's interesting that the article says that Moltzen doesn't want to go to Utility, because I reckon that is where Potter wants to put him.

I think a utility spot would be perfect for Moltzen. As soon as someone is injured he will be taking their spot and have another chance to prove he is a quality player or not.

It is a pretty good run on team however Miller and Tedesco are both risks and Ayshford was really poor last year. I have more faith in Tedesco at this point but who knows how he will come back.

To add to that the backrow is looking pretty poor assuming Blair plays like he did last year. If he performs as a high quality backrower than I figure the forwards will look good. I think there is no chance of this happening but I would love to be wrong.

Not one of 13 Anasta 12 Fulton and 11 Blair have the ability to dominate a man in defence. Zero punch and power in the backrow. A serious worry.

Placing a lot of faith in rookies Tedesco and Miller.

This team could capitulate this year and really challenge for the spoon.

Or it could be a solid top four side.

Moltzen should just get moved on.
I rate Utai as a better utility than him. He has no real use for us other than benjis nightclub coordinator.
Get rid of ayshford and put Sironen in there. Job done.

Don't worry about Tedesco being a rookie, this kid is class and if he stays fit he will shine.

Make no mistake.

Yep - the rookies are a worry and the backrow really lacks grunt.

I love Fulton as a player but he needs to be teamed up with players that compliment him.

Tedesco & miller will be fine.

Anasta & Fulton can hold their own in defence, but don't have the power or size to be damaging runners.

Fulton knows how to run good lines and hit gaps though, so he's well worth keeping in the run on side.

Too much weighs on Blair pulling his finger out & having a f**king go.

I'd be giving Blair 4 games with the first 13 and if not performing, he drops back to interchange and if stil not performing to State Cup and told to find a new club.

Filling his place would be either Bell or BMM (or another young up and comer from State Cup)

I reckon Blair is going to have a cracker of a season.

Our left side attack will have Marshall, Blair, Lawrence and Kirotebete which will be devastating once they actually get to play in the same positions for more than 3 games in f**king row

An outsider's view:

The answer with Blair is simple- he needs to be led to the work. It doesn't matter what jersey he wears, just play him in the ruck. That's where he plays his best footy.

Sheens obviously saw him as an edge runner but even when he was at the Storm he didn't offer much out there bar the odd big game. Problem was, he didn't pick up the Tigers system (such as it was) and he didn't get his hands on the footy often enough. If you put him in the middle, he won't be able to avoid it. Give him some minutes at prop as well.

His strengths are his wrestle and his footwork. Get him in the middle of the field and watch him control the ruck like no one at the Tigers has done in years. Think Jeremy Smith.

Play Anasta on the left, and interchange Pettybourne and Fulton on the right with Benji. Thompson is a good un too, he's tough.

Yeah, it's right about Blair and it's been said before. He played a game last year at prop for us and it was joyous to see him unable to shirk his duties. Although I did see Woods physically pushing him into the line closer to Farah for a hitup at one stage which was funny. To get any value from him it's best to play him at prop. You still only get 200K value out of him. Such a waste of money. Thanks Sheens.
