Murphy aiming to make the most of a great opportunity

Apprentice jockey Patrick Murphy was pleasantly surprised when trainer Guy Walter and the connections of Timeless Spirit stuck with the three kilo claimer in Saturday’s $100,000 G3 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill.
Murphy, 22, has only ridden the 12 city winners but has formed a formidable combination with the former trained Victorian mare ho has won four of her five NSW starts since transferring to Walter’s Warwick Farm stable.

"I didn’t expect to be on her in this race,” Murphy said.
”I would have completely understood if the owner and Guy chose to replace me with a senior jockey but the owner was all for me and Guy supported that willingly so hopefully I’ll be repaying their faith on Saturday.
"It’s a great opportunity and I’m very excited.”
Murphy combination with Timeless Spirit came about through Corey Brown’s misfortune after the senior hoop, who has since moved to Victoria, had indicated to Walter he would ride the mare when she resumed from a spell.
”Corey Brown rode her in the first trial and he wanted to stay aboard when she had her first run at Hawkesbury but he got suspended which gave me a chance,” he said.
”She won there and we haven’t looked back.
”I am actually pretty lucky to have ridden her at all this preparation.”
Murphy was again aboard Timeless Spirit this morning when the pair galloped on the Warwick Farm course proper and the mare’s work gave him the confidence that she will be very competitive on Saturday.
”She worked lovely this morning, she’s unbelievable, such a tough mare,” he said.
”Guy has put plenty of work into her, when she first arrived she was very revy but now she just keeps ticking over.
”She’s really surprised us this preparation, we knew the ability was there and she’s come along in leaps and bounds since her first trial.”
The Millie Fox won’t be the first time Murphy has ridden in a stakes race but he concedes it’s the first time he has been aboard one with a live chance.
”I’ve ridden in a couple but they were both 100/1 so this is my first serious ride in a big race,” he said.
”I’ll just prepare as I’ve prepared leading into any meeting, go to work in the morning and ride a few trackwork and just tick along.
”I know she’ll run well and fingers crossed we can hit the line first.”

when regal cheer missed the start in the all aged (?) last autumn and got beat by Paratroopers (i had money on Para), i stopped backing her

she's done nothing since

so everyone get on this week - she'll bolt in by 5 now that i've said she's got nil
