My argument with Lara is one really based on motivation.

He could deliver so much more for the West Indies, but doesn't.

I suggest you do your homework a bit better on what these players and a couple of others have scored over the last few years, and then re-comment again (this time without rose coloured glasses on ).

look, Ricky Ponting will go down as great, Adam Gilchrist likewise, McGrath and Warne already are, but of the rest...they're just good! They may seem great now, but look 10 yrs after their careers are over. You'll remember Hayden and Boof and all the rest, but us international supporters will remember Warne, Murali, BRIAN Charles, Dravid, Gilchrist, Tendy, McGrath, Vaas, Kumble... and maybe Ponting, Chanderpaul as great but no Hayden, Langer....(there's a reason Hayden has only played about 5 years of continuous cricket...that rules him out as a great player in anyones book!)

Roberts has proved himself to be not overly fond of Brian Lara. In fact he and Colin Croft as well have taken the bagging of the West Indian cricket team to a whole new level. Many West Indians believe there to be a personal conflict between the 2. Steve Waugh has also always been self-opinionated. Fact is he wasn't there and doesn't know the full match situation.

More interesting is the fact that Gary Sobers, Clive Lloyd, Viv Richards, Ian Bishop, Walcott, Botham and Tony Cozier all supported his decision to go for the record, and believe it didn't cost the West Indies victory. Ever think Lara asked his team mates? Ever think of the effect it could potentially have on the english moving into the return leg? Didn't think so.

As for you saying Lara is better than Hayden , well you really are proving you have no idea. In the previous 7 innings (when it really counted) he scored just 100 runs, and the windies lose all 3 tests. In Australia in 2000, he failed repeatedly against Magarth and co. Even in the last test against the Poms on day 5, he did a Ganguly and spent most of the day off the field. You didnt see Hayden do that after his 380.

Lara was severely out of form. I won't question that. BUT let's have a look at some of Lara's statistics.

Lara's accomplishments:
- First man to score 400 runs
- Equal second amount of double centuries by one man equal with greats of Hammond and Bradman
- Only the second man to score 2 scores over 300 in a career
- One of a handful to score 3 consecutive centuries (matches, not innings on 2 occassions
- One of 6 to score a double century and a century in a match
- Likely to be the third batsmen past 10 000 if not the fourth with 9657 so far.
- 2nd highest aggregate runs in a 3 match series.
- 2nd to Bradman in number of times series aggregate runs over 500
ETC.

The list goes on. Lara is one of the all time greats. All time greats as in if you were to pick top 10 of the 20th century, people would struggle to ommit Lara. As for Hayden I doubt it. Let's also remember Lara plays for a struggling team. As Tony Cozier, who has watched more cricket than you or I could even imagine said "I wonder what his stats would been had he (Lara) had somebody to fall over during his career?". Remember Hayden didn't make it in a losing Australian side. Lara has commanded his place at the top of international cricket's betting order for most of the last decade.

But thats ok, you just be happy to play for a draw and let self achievemnt over ride the team winning. Thank God you will never captain Australia with that attitude.
