Anyone catch last nights? Normally I find them a bit of a rehash of NRL360 with some old coot stories thrown in but last nights was well worth a watch. MJ was spilling the beans on what went on during the SL war and the crazy experiences they had in signing up to ARL. It was well worth a watch and great to hear it from someone who lived in it. If you missed it its worth a watch on catch up.

It was a very interesting podcast. They actually played audio of a very famous stoush Paul Vautin had with a journalist. The journalist was right wing columnist Piers Akerman. I had no idea it was him. It's kind of surprising it was him as Akerman seems to be more noted for writing on politics then sport. Although I will note that Ray Hadley does cross over between the two.

They mentioned John Ribot getting ambushed on the NSW Rugby league footy show and jeered in the audience. But he was getting cheered by the audience in the QLD footy show while Mario Fenech was getting jeered for challenging him. I'm half and half on that. I have seen the footage on YouTube where Fenech is challenging Ribot and the audience reaction is kind of mixed.

When Matty and Andrew Johns signed with the then ARL they mentioned a Newcastle executive came over and said they had stuffed the club. The executive is kind of gutless saying that. They stayed out of it and said nothing when the players were deciding whether to stay in ARL or go over to Superleague.

interesting to hear that the whole Newcastle decision was based around Harrigon signing first with the arl. He then convinced the other players to go that way.
Also the role Gus played in convincing players to miss out on big pay days with SL, I wonder what packer bonuses he got for that, a lifetime career at Ch9 maybe?

Listen to the podcast, it'll tell you everything you need to know about the Super League war

I love the MJ podcasts and the SL one last week was absolutely brilliant. But indeed a lot of what was mentioned here was covered brilliantly by the Rugby League Digest. And that much of what Matt Johns said was echoed months before by RLD (Ie the stories match) is a brilliant reflection of how much quality research they’ve put in - in a story that has so many conflicting accounts of who said what, who did what etc.

But as for the Matt Johns podcast, it’s my favourite one to listen to each week. Gus Gould’s, Roy n HG, ABC conversations are some of my other regulars people may know.

Funny that Paul Kent is much maligned by so many in his News Ltd Journo and NRL 360 capacities, but on the MJP I really like his contributions. It’s like there’s two sides to him. The journo forever crying foul and shouting down anything and everything to create a headline, then the genuinely decent bloke who is very objective and can tell a great story - the kind of bloke i’d love to share a few beers with at the pub. Of the News Ltd journos I actually have more time for him than any other, by a country mile.

Yep, I've noticed this too Re Kent. On NRL 360, he's all rage and bluster. But on the podcast he's measured and really insightful and good value

The few times I've listened to it Blocker contributed nothing worthwhile and seemed more of spectator of matty and guest. He would often interrupt with a stupid gasp, laugh or dumb comment.

Agree, he brings nothing to the conversation. And the constant interrupting you refer to drives me crazy. For someone with so little to say he sure opens his mouth a lot.

I would never judge any player who signed with Super League. Imagine getting paid 20k a year and then someone comes a long and offers you 10x or 20x that amount to do the same job.

I would like to see a multi part documentary about the whole war one day. Get the guy who did The Last Dance lol.

I don't mind Blocker. He is what he is and I can accept that. He does have some good stories and while he does curtail a story here and there, in the overall scheme of things it doesn't bother me.

I love this as it's like sitting with 3 blokes at the pub telling war stories - but ones about a sport I love (not random dribble that's only funny amongst a few insiders). You can always find reasons to be annoyed with things but for me that ruins the experience. So I let it go - Blocker is Blocker - and I can enjoy the podcast. Agree about Finch but the dude can't manage those demons sadly... And I can't think of anyone else in the Fox team who'd be a good addition. Couldn't do Fletcher/Hindmarsh etc as it would just be MJ Show Mk2. And def not another journo... I think a guy who's played in a different era to Johns and at the highest levels is the best way to go. The only other one I could think of in Fox that fits that profile would be Big Mal. But while I'd love them to get him on for a show to tell his stories - especially his take on Super League - I don't think he's the right mould to be a regular.

Watching last night's episode was great. These episodes around the games history - rather than commentary on the current game (which there's a thousand others doing) are the ones that really capture my attention. A few things..

Jack Gibson dropping Roach for his discipline. Getting Roach's view of course, and all the chat about the biff of the past in Origin can be romanticised - but I absolutely agree with Gibson. I watched a match on Kayo recently - from 1988 at Lang Park. Benefit of hindsight but it wasn't all "Me and you, let's get it on" type of biff...... It was also an era of cheap shots. And Roach did one of the worst I've ever seen on Bob Lindner... Getting up after making a tackle on Roach, Lindner turns away to follow the ball and Roach cleans him up with a spiteful quick hook.... an absolute king hit of king hits. To me it was equivalent of Danny Williams on Mark O'neill, but Williams had some kind of defence after being whacked himself. Lindner appeared to do absolutely nothing, it was just pure spite. Lindner was absolutely knocked out cold, almost needed a hearse rather than an ambulance. Different era I know - but for all the talk of the biff and how we all loved it (I did too), when you look back, a lot of it was indeed the thuggery that critics of the sport used to howl about. There's a bunch of Origin classics on Kayo that are definitely worth a look and great to watch when you've got a spare hour here and there (I put a thread up about them in the SOO forums a while ago... still running at Zero replies last I was in there - that went well!). That 1988 game at Lang park was one of them.

The Origin Bonding session story. It's a classic one Kent mentioned, him leaving then the Gaz show kicked off on the phone.. I inadvertently was involved in a similar session many years ago at the Coogee Bay hotel. Out with mates on a random weeknight, thought it'd be quiet at the Bay then all the Blues wander in. Gotta say that while half of em were completely mullered they were all great value and no trouble at all. Playing Pool with John Simon after god knows how many we'd had was hilarious. We might as well been using rope rather than pool cues - was the worst game in the history of history. I'd forgotten all about that night until Kent told his story..

The 2nd Test 1990 at Old Trafford. Without doubt my favourite game of all time and MJ also said its the best he's ever seen. Those games in England back then just have an aura about them. Like Ashes test match cricket these days, League test in the 80's and 90's in England were just as revered from both countries. Such a shame it's very much a thing of the past. On the subject of the RLD podcast - they did a show on the 1985 Challenge Cup Final at Wembley, Wigan v Hull, which was the game where Kenny & Sterling were on opposite teams. It's on Youtube - full version - and I cant recommend it enough for a watch. I agreed with RLD in their assessment (amongst many) that it was just the most fun game to watch. I highly recommend it for a look, the quality of league was brilliant, the atmosphere at Wembley matched it, and the commentary was absolutely quality (none of the common bickering at decisions that's now sadly a part of tv commentators). The commentary was a standout in why league was so enjoyable to watch back then.

Blocker does actually have some interesting things to say. And he does love the game. This is where producers need to reign in the panelists. Ch 9 cricket and RL suffer(ed) from it. Fox need to know they don’t need to pander to lowest common denominator boofheads.
Matty Johns is a natural story teller and does have an encyclopaedic knowledge, and many experiences, in the game through his youth and ‘bush’ footy, SL, NRL, ESL, media work. I actually really enjoy listening to him.

Agree too...that SL War podcast was excellent.

The Rugby League Digest podcast is far and away the most impressive recount of the Super League war. If you haven't already done so, give it a listen. It's awesome

I've listened to a lot of it. It's very in depth and those guys know their shit, they are total RL nerds, which is cool.

Something with video footage, interviews etc would be awesome though.

I second that..

I've had great correspondence with the blokes and wrote into them once when they were asking about fan recollections of the Super League days. They read it on one podcast - referring to me as "our loyal Adelaide correspondent".... couldn't stop laughing. Felt like George Negus..

There's still loads to come too. Can't wait for their next series - on the 96 & 97 season... the 96 dragons season is my all-time favourite of the club - despite losing the GF and winning one in 2010.

Was good to have memories of those 90 tests brought back. I was at all 3 and honestly thought we had the best chance ever of finally winning a series. Wembley was incredible, probably my second most fave RL game I've been to, second test was heartbreaking, we had it and lost it on one incredible play and one poorly timed tackle, and third test was clear ealry on they were goign to walk it. Actually got into a bit of a punch up with a loud mouth aussie sat behind me at that third test when it got heated and he started taking the pss , we made up at the end and had a beer together :) Oh to be 20 again :)

The format of using it as a bit of reminiscence and game history is working well but not sure for how long. Youd need to try and rotate some interesting ex players from different eras to keep it fresh.
