Ok guys, with all this stuff going on about News pulling out and us potentially having to prop the Melbourne storm up to the tune of 6mil until they are able to stand on their feet, alot of people are questioning if we should be doing that

Im firmly in the yes column but thats being discussed in 100 threads elsewhere

What im wondering, is if this code is currently recieving 100mil a year (500mil deal over 5 years i think this current deal was), how much of that do you think Melbourne contribute?

I'd say at least 10mil.

We're holding the damn competition up!!

Get rid of the Sharks and the Roosters and start up a Perth team again and everyone will be happy.

Ok, you might dissapoint the 5000 hardcore Sharks fans and the 3 hardcore Roosters fans, but hey, they'll get over it.

I'm assuming you mean how much extra Melbourne add to the TV contract?

If Melbourne is worth 10, Brisbane/QLD must be about 80m. Since we actually have games on TV every week.. opposed to 3 times a year.

Which of course doesn't add up.

Not to mention what they help bring in sponsorship wise. I mean if you were a major company looking to tip in millions of dollars to get your name out there, would you be more inclined and willing to do so in a comp that has a team in a city of 4 million people who would potentially use/buy/invest in your product, or a city without a team and little to no chance of getting your name out there and those 4m people not giving a f**k about your product or even knowing what it is?

Anyone who says or thinks it wouldn't make any difference knows f**k all about basic business strategies and is incredibly stupid to boot. The value of having Melbourne in the comp in regards to what they bring to it is far far far much more than what it costs the comp. Without the Mexicans the NRL would be much poorer for it in every way shape and form.

As would this board .

Dont worry, as soon as this new structure comes in there will be buyers for us.

Guarenteed.

Exactly, figure.
You recon they add 5mil? 1mil? 10mil?

Given the idea to buy these sort of sports is so they can advertise during them, i would think having a melbourne side involved which adds to the viewership, i would think 10mil out of the current deal, given the ratings, that should rise in the next deal.

I think the value of the Storm and what the NRL are getting paid for their exposure in Melbourne are 2 different things.

Its hard to put an exact dollar amount on how much Melbourne are worth to our current TV deal. Sure their market is vast but not enough exposure.

If the Storm are on prime time or shown at regularly good times, and rate as bad as the Swans in Sydney, they could be a hinderence on our next TV deal. If they rate as well as they seem to be, they could really become an important peice of the TV sporting landscape in Victoria.

I had a theory earlier today, could a TV station buy a certain teams home (or away) games exclusivly. Like, could channel 9 Melbourne (only Melbourne) have exclusive rights to broadcast Melbourne Storm games ahead of Fox Sports. Obviously there are numerous stumbling blocks in the way and it wouldnt work for Sydney clubs and probably Newcastle, the CC or Illawarra.

I believe the Storm get similar ratings to the prime-time Swans despite being shown at porno hour.

NBN did this for a few years with the Knights so I don't see why not.

Thats missing the point. We get 3 games down here but we feature in PLENTY live games up there. We played in plenty friday night games this year that went live to either NSW or QLD. Sponsors aren't just targeting victoria - they want to be involved in a national comp.

Its not about how much the Storm are seen in Victoria - its about how much they are seen overall. Reckon anyone in QLD was watching the broncos storm prelim final live????

Would QLD channel 9 rather show broncs vs sharks or broncs vs storm?

Ignoring strategic value, unless its winning timeslots against product that costs about the same or is more expensive, its probably not worth much at all. I'd say this only happens one game a year.

Showing the Swans in sydney would probably cost the AFL money, and will cost it loads more if they want to continue this deal.

zero, zip, nada - why would they pay millions for a product and then broadcast it in competition to the home shopping channel at midnight!!
wake up people - Mark my words - Melb will NEVER, EVER want league. AFL is on a pedestal down there, the moment they feel threatened it's bye bye league.

If thats the case then why did 600 000 odd watch the Grand Final last weekend?

Have you ever considered drowning one's self in one's own toilet? You should.

Yes lets get rid of a club who dominated the early half of this decade. You have a short memory you twat. We'll be back, you can bank on that.

Typical out-of-towner ... always wanting to get rid of Sydney teams. The game was healthier with your club not in it.

lol, 9 barely shows a melbourne game down there, no way it would be anything close to 10mill.

It is probably worth a lot but Ch9 are deliberately not letting us reap fulll value. As said if I was a company looking to sponsor a team or sport would I choose one that included a Melbourne audience or one that didn't?

Current worth: very little
Potential worth: a lot more - depends on whoever takes them up, how much courage they have and what they decide to do with them

The game was never as close to extinction before Melbourne came in.
