Junior Kiwis test review
Written By: Carl Ewart

It’s amazing what a week can do for the Junior Kiwis, after levelling the two test series one all against the England U18’s yesterday at North Harbour Stadium. The match was played in wet slippery conditions, but a crowed of over 800 people braved the cold to watch the Kiwis beat the English 22-12.

The Kiwis suffered an early blow, with promising second rower Simon Mannering been ruled out with a virus, before kick off. But before a strong haka, the feeling was the Kiwis were here to play this week after going down 22-20 in the first test.

The Kiwis needed to start well, and that they did through an intercept try to centre Josh Davis. England replied soon after through a soft try to fullback Lee Smith next to the posts, England converted to give them a 6-4 lead.

Junior Kiwis were next to score through captain Iosia Soliola, after a strong run through a gap from 20 meters out. The next try showed what potential Kiwi’s centre Joshua Davis has, after run that looked nothing from 10 meters out, he powered over with three defenders on his back to score his second try. That put the Kiwi’s out to a 14-6 lead which was the halftime score.

Just before the break, a massive all in brawl resulted in three players been sent to the bin. With Kiwis Viliami Manu and Sonny Fa'I, been joined by England captain James Graham in the bin. It resulted from a kick through by the Kiwi’s, with an English player blatantly taking out one of the chases. The Kiwi player reacted, before all 26 players jumped in for a free for all.

It was only a matter of minutes after halftime before Davis grabbed his third try, through a simple hard straight run. And the writing was on the wall for the English, who looked down and out. However the English regrouped, and interchange prop Jason Golden scored a brilliant forwards try. The Try kept the English in striking distance, and with the score at 18-12, the feeling was that the English could make a come back like last week. But that was until Davis made yet another break that put winger Marvin Filipo away in the corner to wrap the match up.

For the remaining 10 minutes, the Kiwis held on with more brutal defence, More than often resulting in a turn over. Just as the final whistle went another altercation started, before been broken up by referee Craig Pascoe and trainers.

After the hand shakes, the celebrations begin with a roaring victory haka, which was well received by the fans.

Man of the match with out a doubt was Kiwis centre Joshua Davis. The young Wellington player, who has signed for the Parramatta Eels, was simply outstanding. Everything he did turned to gold, and he caused nightmares for English defence down the flanks.

this guy sounds special to me :D

Not only because he scored three trys but the fatc that he was man of the match while he still had Iosia Soliola playing in the same side.

I might be mistaken here, but I'm sure he's the same bloke who couldn't make his first grade debut at the Roosters due to cap restrictions.

someone might be able to confirm that.

That is true eelevation. Iosia Soliola (can't wait to hear Ray calling that one) did miss out because of cap restraints and is a very impressive player as well.

I haven't heard such big wraps about a junior player bound for Parra since Greg Drake & Billy Greentree were comming through

Sounds great, this what we should do all the time, go for the cream of the crop!

Thanks eelementary. Not that there is anything wrong with him being a Maori. Just curious.

No worries.

Maoris are great people - one of my best mates is a Maori. He is SCARY.

He's like 195cm tall and prolly about 105 kg, and he knows the haka.

He's huge and when he gets angry he's very scary, but he's the nicest guy you'll ever meet.

I watch him play both tests, he was ok in the first but was awsome in the second test - he is a white boy, which proves he has the talent to make it that far in NZ, because most of the talented players are Moari or Island decent.

I also saw him play against NSW Country U18, i heard Junior Kiwis slectors (who sat in front of us) say he was the first man to pick himself in to the JNR Kiwis.

He is bulky and will no doubt grow....take care of this Kid - he is a great prospect for NZ

DO you agree now that we(NZ) need a second team in the NRL?
