One gets the feeling that the NRL had this planned the whole time.Firstly putting us under pressure to merge and telling us that we needed a stronger comp. with less team's.
And causing a major brew ha-ha with South's by trying to get them kicked out as well.
Now all of the sudden we need more team's in the competition!!!
With all due respect I feel we have been had. Please don't missunderstand me, as I would'nt of wanted to merge with any one other than Balmain, because had it been the Bulldogs I would have prefered taking up haberdashery then follow league.
But I feel that these big KNOBS at the NRL may have thought, first we will get rid of these little sh*tty teams then in a couple of years we will expand.
Can someone PLEASE EXPLAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't believe expansion was on the agenda in 1999 when we were forced to merge - but the Souths win and legal precedent has meant that the agenda quickly shifted back to evening out a 15 team comp!!!

This is bullsh*t given Souths performances since their return have proven the lack of their competitive viability as a 15th team - plus reinforced the likely non-viability of any 16th franchise!!

Meanwhile - the pr*cks who run the game won't even let natural attritition rid us of the pox on rugby league that is the Melbourne Storm - as they continue to be artificially propped-up & subsidised by News Limited and the NRL!!

Our simple message to the league must be that any expansion should only include the reintroduction of traditional teams - and if they want an even numbered competition - bite the bullet - f**k Melbourne off - and go back to 14!!!!

Yes true, but as opposed to South's at least Melbourne are competitve and I suppose if you run the show you must have a strangle hold on the competition and do what you please within reason.
But I cannot understand where terminating the traditional existence of 2 foundation clubs like Wests and Balmain and basically replacing them with the Central Coast Fluffy duck's or Gold Coast wombats is going to achieve.Fair enough they are greater districts as far as size goes but did'nt Seagull's of the coast fold????

Gold Coast never folded financially - and are still in fact more financially soluble than any currently operational rugby league club in the country!

They folded with the Crushers due to the Broncos demands for a mortgage on the SE-QLD region!

Melbourne on the other hand has never turned a profit - and has had large losses written-off by News Ltd every year since its inception!

They were successful because they were allowed to plunder all the best talent from the defunct Super League clubs (Reds - Mariners - Rams)! Players such as Kimmorley - Hill - Howe - Kearns - Geyer - Ross - plus picked up Lazarus - Kearney and Nikau from fellow Superleague-aligned clubs in what was a sweetheart deal with the News Ltd run NRL at the time!!!

(Meanwhile Nth Qld got f**k-all of the carved up players - just ask Sheensy!!!!)

Melbourne is a fruitless and ill-conceived exercise in expanding a game into hostile and ignorant territory at the expense of the traditional fans of the game!!!

You know, I was talking to this d*ckhead in my cab that Id picked up from the Domestic Airport a couple of month's ago.And believe it or not he was one of the few supporters the Melbourne storm have.
Whilst driving along I asked him of his opinion of why teams like Balmain and Wests had to be kicked out of the competition he did not know at this stage I followed WT, he then replied"Mate, just go to the ground and watch how many people go and watch them when the first graders are'nt playing and that should answer your question"
I then replied to him"you don't think that the fact there is hardly no publicity for these club's may perhaps have something to do with it,and that maybe because of all the money NEWS HAS PUMPED INTO YOUR TEAM IS THE FACT YOU GUY'S STILL EXIST."
Needless to say not another word was uttered between the Domestic and Dover height's.
You know I meet everyone in my cab from prostitutes to politicians and sometimes at the same time! And I can almost stomach anyone, but not the few Melbourne people I've met that follow the storm. :|

Plus the most amazingly ironic hyprocrisy that exists in relation to the News Ltd-Storm set-up is that despite part-owning and subsidising the team - News Ltd cannot even get its own parochial local sports editors to give rugby league a few f**king inches of column space!!

The AFL culture is so all-absorbing - blindly parochial and fiercely protectionist that they refuse to even share the market with league even on the most cursory of levels!

So why expand into a market that refuses to acknowledge your very existence - regardless of how successful the team might be on the field???

The most horrifically empty moment in the history of Australian rugby league came in 1999 when the premiership trophy made the trip down south to be greeted by a handful of fickle and pathetic band-wagon jumpers who mostly could not name a single player or quote two of the rules of the game!!!

I never want to see that happen again!!

I won't get my nickers in a knot if the NRL decides to expand purely because we were "forced" to merge. At the time both Wests & Balmain were struggling financially & on the field. I realise that given time thing may have changed, but then again it could have meant 10 very lean years with no guarantees of success & possible extinction altogether. The merger (as long as Magpies & Tigers retained their identity in the feeder comp) was the best possible solution.

I am glad to have a competitve & vialble team in the premier RL comp. of world. If the NRL decided that due to expansion, in the interests of fairness, it would offer all the JV clubs the opportunity to go back to stand alone status I would be very much against this.

I believe the Central Coast & the Gold Coast have solid claims to be included in the NRL, based on juniors, infrastructure, & finances. I see it as being beneficial to the long term success of the game in general.

I can't see how Melbourne is ever going to be viable. If you have a quality team, as they do, & have won a Premiership in recent history, as they have, & you cany get 7,000 people to a game against opposition in the top 8 (eg Tigers last week), then what hope is there?

Expand if its going to benefit Rugby League. Wests Tigers are here to stay & will be part of the NRL comp in what ever form it take in the next 10 years. I for one am very comfortable with that.

Yeahhh.......Gus, I noticed you are located on the central coast and I suppose you would'nt mind seeing a couple of games there each year.So I think that if I can make the trip from Boise you could make it to.

Max,

I get to about 6 or so games each year in Sydney. I'd go to more if I could, but its not so easy with a young family. The fact I live on the Central Coast has nothing to do with my views. You can take me at my word for that or not - whatever.

If a team was established here I would only ever go to one game a year, ie- when West Tigers were in town. From my vantage point up here however I can see first hand how the thriving junior comp we have would benefit with a regular NRL presence & vice versa.

The NRL needs to push the relocation of a club to the central coast next time the licences are up. For the greater good of Rugby League Gold Coast and Central Coast both need teams. Melbourne might work in the long term but it will take probably as long as the swans too and that isn't really worth it when somewhere like the Gold Coast will get lost to AFL or Central Coast to union. In saying that as Wests Tigers fans we need to worry about our own interests so there must never be more teams in the comp. We had all the pressure put on us and we made a decicion. Time for the NRL to do the same to some other poor performing clubs.

Agree with all your statements regarding the Melbourne Storm. The franchise was a Super League concept to begin with, and when the game re-united, they were chucked into the fray, with News ltd. agreeing to sacrifice the Perth Reds and the ARL turning off the life support for the Crushers. The fact is and always will remain that the Storm will never be successful in Rugby League. People say give it time...how much time do they need? They've won a Premiership. They have been a final's team since their inception. You can't say that they have been starved of success, they've had more than both Joint-Venture clubs put together. Sadly they are a waste of time and is holding the game from progressing into the future. Yes it does sicken me that they are in place of Foundation club's in Balmain and Western Suburbs, but a few 'suits' decided over a lavish lunch, that the Storm were more important than 2 club's that had a proud history and supporter base of 92 years. the NRL should do the right thing and act. Relocate the failed franchise to the Gold Coast, and implement a Central Coast team to once and for all.

Why should they relocate the failed franchise to the Gold Coast, and implement a Central Coast team once and for all.Why can't they meet the same fate as Wests and Balmain,Reds,Chargers,Rams,North's,Newtown...etc....etc. And dissapear from First Grade.

Max - why they should not relocate the failed franchise is because it is not and has never been a real franchise!!!!

Just let it die its natural death and be done with it!!!

(And if heaven-forbid a new team were to entre the comp - the people of that region need a team of their own - not some cloistered Superleague dinosaur)!!!

14 teams were the only sustainable number in 2000 - and things have since changed for the worse (as regards the pokie tax etc.) - THEY HAVE NOT GOT BETTER!!!!

So forget the f**king national expansion pipe dreams - f**k the central and gold coasts - and flick Melbourne!!! All problems will be solved!!!

I'd also be happy to pick over the remains of the Storm carcass as a club - just like they did to the SL clubs in 98!!!!
