Mortimer extends deal

DANIEL Mortimer, the gun rookie halfback at Parramatta, has declared himself ready to play against the Bulldogs next week - the club where his father, Peter, and uncles Steve and Chris are legends.
The 19-year-old Mortimer actually knocked back offers from the Bulldogs and Wests Tigers last week before extending his deal at Parra for a further 12 months. "I obviously grew up as a Bulldogs supporter - it was pretty hard not to in my family,'' Daniel told us. "It would be an amazing thrill to make my debut in the NRL against them, and I think I'm ready. But it's not up to me and I thought Jeff Robson was pretty solid on Friday night.'' Daniel would be the first Mortimer to play against the Bulldogs in first grade, although his brothers played against them in the lower grades for Manly. Daniel possesses a good all-round halfback's game. He is a strong kicker of the football and is a tough customer who loves to get involved. The irony of Mortimer signing a new contract in the week Brett Finch was shoved out of the club is that he is related to the former NSW Origin halfback. Finch's sister is married to Ian Mortimer - Chris's son.

I like that Ando was mindful to look after Dan this week. Clearly he does't think that our future lies with Tim Smith.

So - uh, now that Mortimer has extended his contract, what odds of him making his debut soon?

Surely that's the best sign we're going to have a look at him in the top grade soon?

It's not like the bar has been set especially high for the halfback position at the club this year!

the same place we hid tim smith

Tim Smith is actually bigger than him...

Is he that bad of a defender, or is it his size you are concerned about Staggers?

definitely his size, he was targeted by saints forwards the other day and he struggled to halt alot of their progress without assistance, he's a fearless bloke and won't shy away from the rough and tough stuff but this is first grade mate, it's a massive difference to where he's currently at..

Daniel won't be the 1st mortimer to play against the bulldogs, Chris played against them when he was at Penrith. As usual the telecrap reporters have no idea.

he's pretty much the same size as KK and he goes OK in defense

KK's more a solid build than him and going OK in defence in NYC is slightly different than going ok in first grade when you have the likes of Webb, thaiday, Asotasi and gallan running at you.

Colonel was right, he can defend quite well, it's his size though, he is still a small boy/man and they will test him plenty. Whether he is up to it is doubtful, only due to experience and size not due to technique or willingness in defence. He actually chases and looks to defend. I watched him carefully against the Rooters two weeks ago after Colonel pointed out that he was a decent defender and he did very well he has no fear of the bigger boys and like I said, chases them and more importantly does not miss. But NRL is a whole other kettle of fish though isn't it. Is he ready now? I think if he was brought on slowly, maybe something like K.Keating, then it may just work.

But DA is the best judge of this at this stage, the last thing we would all want is to rush him now to the determent of his long term future as a player by crushing him mentally and or physically due to major injuries.

KK is a sound defender, has the right technique. Mortimore is a keen defender, but misses way too many tackles, averages something like 5 miss tackle and 3 ineffective tackles a game in Toyota cup.

He can't possibly be smaller than KK, surely? And KK is a great defender imo. In fact, KK is a bloody good defender - he stopped Dell by himself a few times with some beautiful tackles.

kk is a solid build, I'm sure he's weigh more than mortimer.

To play devil's advocate for a second here:

Attack is our problem at this point in time. Would it, in you guys' eyes, be a better idea to put in a kid who may (maybe not) produce more points, even if his defence may leak a couple?

I think we can cater for him defensively. It wouldn't be ideal, obviously. But with guys like Lowrie, Hindy and Matt Keating we have solid defenders who can 'protect' him in defence. If it helps our attack, it may just be a solid idea.

Having said that, if he does play next week it would have to be off the bench anyway I reckon. Robbo did nothing wrong to get dropped and clearly KK i going to start at 6.
