So does anyone else think it was a cheap shot on Morts ?

Show me any shoulder charge that is not a cheap shot.
Show me any late hit that is not a cheap shot.

Too many arsehole fans enjoy this sort of garbage.

It was intentional. Watched a replay of this malicious attack 5 times. They wanted him out of the game or at least, slow him down and drain his confidence. Tagataesi is a nasty dirty player like Watmough.

Parramatta coach Daniel Anderson has slammed the blind eye turned to a "missile" attack on Daniel Mortimer that has left the young rookie in doubt for next Friday's NRL preliminary final with the Bulldogs.

Mortimer left the field with a hip injury in the 12th minute after he was taken out by Gold Coast replacement Sam Tagataese following a clearing kick in just the fifth minute of the game.

The 20-year-old rookie sensation limped through the next seven minutes before finally being replaced by Feleti Mateo as the Eels went on to beat the Gold Coast 27-2 at the Sydney Football Stadium.

Tagataese was warned by the referees at a scrum a few minutes following the incident but Anderson was livid that no penalty was awarded during the game.

"I'm pretty upset about that. I've had numerous discussions with the referees about kick pressure this year because I've thought in the Origin series that the kickers were getting collected," said Anderson.

"I know Samuel (Tagataese) pretty well from New Zealand but he was a missile. He had his arms beside him, he didn't go for a tackle and he took out a player.

"It doesn't matter who it was, whether it was a young bloke or not, he took him out and to have nothing done is disappointing.

"If he didn't finish the game and he couldn't get back on the field then he is in doubt for next week." Mortimer is not the only injury concern for the Eels, with stand-in centre Jonathan Wright suffering an ankle injury.

Wright has been Krisnan Inu's superb understudy for the past two weeks, but with Inu still battling a hamstring injury that kept him out of the semi-final clash Anderson faces an unwanted casualty ward during the week.

"I'm not sure if Jonathan Wright will be available anyway because he has done some damage to his ankle," said Anderson.

"I do want Krisnan available because we are getting a bit skinny.

Would be good to have Inu and Morts back in next week. We need to step it up a notch against the dogs and all our regulars need to be 100%. I'd say Morts is 50/50 and will improve as the weeks goes on. Hopefully there's no cracks to any bones. A dose of the quarter zone injection might be on the cards. Does anyone know the status of Kris Keating - could he be a late back-up option?

Good to see Ando blow up over the incedent, it looked late and deliberate. no penalty but 30 seconds later the Tits gets a penalty which was soft as. I Hope the young bloke is aright.

Eels fury as Tagataese threatens Mortimer's finals dream
Article from: The Courier-Mail

By Steve Ricketts

September 18, 2009 11:55pm

PARRAMATTA coach Daniel Anderson could barely contain his anger after young five-eighth Daniel Mortimer was injured in last night's NRL semi-final.

Mortimer was taken out by a "missile" like late tackle from Gold Coast Titans forward Sam Tagataese in the semi-final at the Sydney Football Stadium.

Mortimer is in extreme doubt for next Friday's huge derby game against the Bulldogs at ANZ Stadium with his hip flexor injury failing to respond to a pain killing injection after he limped from the field in the 12th minute of a game won 27-2 by Parramatta.

The 20-year-old was felled by Tagataese in the fifth minute after the Eels playmaker put in a kick on the last tackle. Referees Shayne Hayne and Jared Maxwell took no action but the incident will come under the microscope from the match review panel and Tagataese, who played under Anderson at the New Zealand Warriors, could attract a charge.

"I'm pretty upset about that," Anderson said of the incident. "I've had numerous discussions with referees about kick pressure this year because I thought in the Origin series the kickers were getting collected.

"I know Samuel pretty well from New Zealand, but he was a missile. He had his arms beside him, he didn't go for a tackle and he took out a player.

"It doesn't matter who it was, whether it was a young bloke or not. He took him out and to have nothing done is disappointing."

Mortimer himself said he feared his dream of playing in a NRL grand final might have been dashed by the late hit.

"We'll just have to wait and see, but I'm certainly in doubt for next week," he said.

Mortimer was replaced by Tongan World Cup star Feliti Mateo, who scored the first try of the match in the 20th minute, running one off the ruck through Anthony Laffranchi's attempted tackle.

The Eels led 13-2 at halftime and when off-contract Gold Coast product Kevin Kingston scored a try in the 60th minute to make it 19-2 Parramatta's blue and gold army started chanting "We want the Bulldogs".

It's a western Sydney clash which should attract 70,000 to ANZ Stadium and with Parramatta's confidence levels going through the roof there is no reason why the Eels cannot qualify for their first grand final since 2001.

Anderson said the Eels struggled to match the intensity they displayed in beating St George Illawarra last Sunday, but he said the bravery of his players could not be questioned.

"We never got out of our half much, but we answered everything that was thrown at us," he said. "We were brave when we needed to be. I thought the Titans made easy metres but we just did not buckle.

"Desperation in our 20 metre area won us the game. I was very anxious. We looked like we were slipping in mud a little bit. We didn't kick as well as we could have.

"My head was turned right the whole time in the second half. We're a little tired but we'll be ready next week."

It was late, but happens all the time, just unfortunately hit him in a sweet spot. I think he knows hes a huge chance of missing the game from his body language.

Mortimer dream hit by a missile

Glenn Jackson | September 19, 2009

THE NRL has been granted a dream preliminary final next Friday night, although it may lose one of the most intriguing subplots in Parramatta's gifted five-eighth Daniel Mortimer, who is in doubt to face his father's former club following a tackle Eels coach Daniel Anderson described as a ''missile''.

Mortimer's prospects of playing against the Bulldogs at ANZ Stadium will rest with an MRI scan today on a hip cork and many ice baths and physiotherapy sessions. Mortimer lasted just 12 minutes of the Eels' 27-2 disposal of the Titans after being hit slightly late in a tackle by Gold Coast replacement forward Sam Tagataese.

''It's very tender,'' Mortimer said. ''I've been in better places. I'll get an MRI and a lot of physio work and see how she pulls up. I'll do everything I can to get out there. If I'm not too much of a liability to the team I'll be out there.''

Mortimer attempted to take the field again with the help of pain-killing injections, but spent much of the rest of the game in an ice bath and was for a period comforted by his father Peter, the former Bulldog.

''I got a few needles in it when I came off … and had a little test run but it just pulled up way too sore. I would have been no good to the team,'' Mortimer said. ''I was better off sitting in the ice bath - every time I heard a roar from the crowd I couldn't help but smile and think, 'Maybe I'll live again next week'.''

Both the Eels and the Bulldogs will now have key playmakers under an injury cloud; Bulldogs halfback Brett Kimmorley is attempting to return from a fractured cheekbone.

The grand-final qualifier will have a number of curious clashes; the Bulldogs have made no secret of coveting the signature of Mortimer, the rookie Eel with the famous Bulldogs name, while the match will be the first between the two teams in a preliminary final since the infamous, for Eels supporters at least, clash in 1998, in which the Bulldogs trailed 18-2 with 11 minutes remaining only to topple their traditional rivals in extra time.

Asked about the prospect of playing the Bulldogs, Mortimer said: ''That's one of the reasons I want to be on the paddock, to play the Doggies. To win against them a few weeks back [in round 20] was one of my highlights of the year. I'd say there'd be a bit bigger crowd and a bit bigger pressure on this game.''

Mortimer had no problem with the tackle, saying: ''It's a contact sport, I've just got to cop it on the chin.''

But Anderson was fuming.

''He didn't play the rest of the game, I'm pretty upset about that,'' the coach said. ''I've had numerous discussions with the referees about kick pressure this year, because I thought in the Origin series that the kickers were getting collected.

''I know Samuel pretty well from New Zealand, but he was a missile - he had his arms beside him, he didn't go for a tackle and he took out a player. To have nothing done is disappointing.''

Tagataese appeared to be under clear instructions to hussle the kickers and playmakers, and he clattered into Mortimer after four minutes as if he were some sort of search and destroy rocket. He was not penalised but was later warned by the officials.

Mortimer hobbled around for eight minutes but finally left the field with a hip pointer injury, his finals series suddenly and painfully in doubt.

Eels skipper Nathan Cayless said the fact that Mortimer came from such a bloodline was in his favour as he attempts to recover. ''He's got some pretty good breeding,'' Cayless said. ''He was in a pretty bad way, but I'm sure he's going to do everything he can to play next week. He's not going to want to miss out. He's a tough kid.''

Eels doctor Michael Johnson said he was hopeful Mortimer would play, saying of the hip cork: ''Clinically it's not too deep.'' But he was less certain about centre Krisnan Inu - as well as his replacement last night, Jonathan Wright.

Inu missed last night's match with a hamstring injury and remains in doubt for the preliminary final, while Wright will have an MRI to determine the extent of a left ankle injury. But he is more than likely to be out for the season.

The Eels had an able replacement for Mortimer in Feleti Mateo, who scored a 21st minute try for the club to help eliminate the Titans, and notch their ninth win from 10 games.
