Mortimer holds Kearney's faith

25 Nov, 2010 04:21 PM
DANIEL Mortimer at No.6 or No.7 — that was the main news when Steve Kearney had his first official day as Parramatta Eels coach last week.Kearney said Mortimer would be one of the starting halves in the 2011 NRL premiership.
Such faith will do wonders for Mortimer's confidence after his troubled 2010 as part of the Eels' troubled 2010.
Parramatta beat off the Canterbury Bulldogs and signed Mortimer to a rich contract at the start of the season on the strength of his notable 209 debut season in the NRL.
Thereafter Mortimer struggled as the Eels struggled and he was targeted by opposition attacks.
It's months to the start of the 2010 season but optimism is one quality not lacking at the Eels after the incoming Kearney's coaching New Zealand to their 16-12 Four Nations Cup final win over Australia.
Meanwhile, departed coach Daniel Anderson is not the only casualty from the 2010 season.
Eels legend Brett Kenny has been sacked as Wentworthville coach after taking them to the NSW Cup finals but has been promised a role with the Eels in the NRL Cup.
By contrast, Matt Cameron, whose Eels finished last in 2010, has been retained as Toyota Cup coach.
Brett Cook is the new Magpie NSW Cup coach.
Cook has taken Wenty to the last two Bundaberg Red Cup premierships.
Aaron McDonald, who has been Wenty's NSW Cup and before that Premier League assistant coach for seasons, takes over as Bundy Cup coach.
Alex Chan, a long-serving front-rower at the Eels and other clubs, is Wenty's new A-grade coach.

Whatever people say about his talent or whatever, that is a huge boost for his confidence. Here's hoping Mortimer has a stellar 2011 :)

Go Channy go!! What a player! 01, finals, Villasanti headclash and he turns around and gives him a gobful. Cleared up a lot about the coaching position. Good news on Morts, has to be our starting 6 with Humble/Murray at half.

Interesting Kearney is opting for Morts as a certain starter on his first day in the joint, regardless of pre-season training and trial form...

Kenny didn't last long at Wenty after resigning from the Board upon being appointed. Interesting to see he's been promised a role in whatever the "NRL Cup" is.

Yeah its just good we didnt see one of those articles where the coach comes out and flames the player and says he is not part of their 2011 plans :)

Prior to this season mortz signed a nice juicy contract and was also guranteed a start in the halves that would have done wonders for his confidence

That worked out well.......

Don't be too hard on Morts, after all he was making 30 plus tackles a game, and did a fair bit of mopping up behind the other 2 left side defenders.

Not saying he is a world beater, but the criticism is tough, what would the outcry have been like if he had gone to the Dogs.

The structure or lack of it last season, really didn't suit a 2nd year 19/20 year old, he is still a better option that Robson

Hopefully the circumstances of our structure for 2011 is a much better situation than for 2010. Might give Morts some better development than the rubbish that was 2010.

+1.

I would like to see the club get Joey Johns back coaching him. If Tahu doesn't like that he can always just sit in the corner sucking his thumb while Johns is about.

Maybe it's just me but i would much rather positions (especially those that we are weakest in, ie the halves, centres) be open for the taking, so those that are in contention bust their arse in the pre season/trials and at training to prove they are the best and earn their spot.

Guarnanteeing positions 4 months out from round 1 will just breed complacency

I think it's a smart move by SK, as Morts can now sit back and take it easy. I expect he will hardly bother to train and just turn up on game day round 1 to collect his jumper with the 7 on it.

We will finally get to see what he can do with a playing weight of around 90kgs. :D

Ur right, with the extra weight behind him it might help him kick a ball further than 30m

Now lets see...Mortimer needs someone to help him develop into a talented five eight...If only we had someone like that hanging round the club looking for a coaching job!!!

Is it really that hard or is Kenny a bit like Ricky can play the position just can't coach it???

he will be rubbish & is still getting special treatment. Our best trained halves should be starting & kearney should be guaranteeing anyone a starting spot.

shows how special morts is being treated to every other player

Wow, is Stephen Kearney a magician as well???

In all seriousness - and as a long-suffering Parramatta fan, I hope Kearney's faith in Mortimer is rewarded with the mighty Eels doing well in 2011. It will be riveting viewing.

...And Delboy, for the record, I would take Robson over Mortimer any day of the week. ;-)
