Mortimer holds Kearney's faith

"DANIEL Mortimer at No.6 or No.7 — that was the main news when Steve Kearney had his first official day as Parramatta Eels coach last week.Kearney said Mortimer would be one of the starting halves in the 2011 NRL premiership."

Wow, is Stephen Kearney a magician as well???

In all seriousness - and as a long-suffering Parramatta fan, I hope Kearney's faith in Mortimer is rewarded with the mighty Eels doing well in 2011. It will be riveting viewing.

...And Delboy, for the record, I would take Robson over Mortimer any day of the week. ;-)

Robson is a lock in a 7 shirt, end of story. If you can't see there was a reason why he didn't play more than about 6 games in 6 years at the Beagles, then OK believe in him.

Honest toiler who was signed to bring stability at Wenty, think that says it, good bloke not NRL standard

Cluck cluck. Then I'm a goose.

Robson is by no means a world beater but he offers more to any side than Mortimer ever has. At least Robson can do the basics - just.

I really don't understand this love affair some of you have with Daniel Mortimer. He is [going on performances to date] a park footballer at best. Name one other player who gets the same special treatment this bloke does??? It's ridiculous, Raudonikis!

Not disputing much of that at all mate. What I disagreed with was your comment in your previous post regarding Mortimer: "...he is still a better option than Robson".

Please, someone, explain to me what it is that makes anyone believe that??

I think that both Morts and Robson have issues, as long as they keep Mortimer in 6 I think he can be useful.

Robson is a far too slow to be a threat at NRL level and I thought last year would be more useful as a 9, didn't happen. That may be where Morts ends up as a PJ type 9. I just don't like Robson in the team at half, things are done in slowmo, and he doesn't have the pace to run into gaps. That is just how I see it.

This is supposed to be a positive article, instead the usual suspects come out and dilute it

Naturally Boxy, everyone has varying opinions and this forum gives them their voice and outlet for expression.

IMO, it is nice for the coach to have confidence in Morts but to me, unless it's Hayne or Hindmarsh, no positions in our team should be guaranteed, the rest should be fought for during the crunching summer heat and the gruelling weights and fitness sessions and the 3 trial matches we have.

TBH, and I know we should give the kids a go, but I think we should play full strength sides in all 3 of our trial matches with only variations of the team turning out in each match. Half the reason we don't play well at the start of the season is because we always look 'underdone'. All of our top 25 (provided they're available) should play 2/3 games at least. Let's have some real slogfests in our trial matches and be good to go when it counts for once, rather than finding our feet for the first 4-6 rounds.

Boxy, it is only an opinion, I hope that we are proved wrong and the side plays brilliantly and my opinion turn sout to be completely wrong. That would be perfect, not likely but would be terrific to happen.

Don't worry Delboy, I didn't mean you :) I didn't mean WOE either. I meant that spartan guy.

Spartan's comment was completely justified. Morts shouldn't be handed a guarenteed starting spot just to boost his confidence. He should earn his spot like every else.

Back in 2003 Michael Witt made his debut in the second half of the year and we had a good run with him playing in the halves just missing the finals after a terrible start to the year. But in round 1 2004 Brian Smith correctly decided NOT to use him as there were parts of his game that he didn't improve in off season training. Kearney should be going with the same kind of attitude.

with the lost of keating, the lack of availability of another half, I think it's pretty clear Mortimer will start round one in the 6 or 7 because who are the other options?

A journeyman who isnt up to it in Robson?
Tom Humble who there are genuine question marks over?
Or Brad Murray who hasnt even played first grade?

Two of those blokes are halfbacks, meaning IMO it's Morts or Humble for the 6. I'd start Morts.

I wasn't criticising Spartan's point or disagreeing with it, don't worry :) my gripe was that he has a tendency to post very negative comments in every thread, especially the ones that are trying to be positive. In essence I just want the guy to lighten up a bit, no point being negative all the time.
