Mortimer shakes 'second year syndrome'

I think he should retire & get a job at the Terrorgraph. Let's face it - he is seen in the media more often than the horoscope's.

How often do you see any of the big names come out and say stuff like this. I don't think i can remember Prince ever being in the paper and talking about how he will perform, rather he turns up and does a job.

If Mortz turned into a Cronk type player i would be more then happy but the kid needs to stop talking about it and just do it. He has alot to work on and he doesn't have the support the Cronk had around him to take the pressure off.

I will be over the moon if Mortz starts to perform but I still have my reservations, like I said before there is nothing Mortimer has shown me to prove that he has the ability to be a genuine playmaker (I was of this opinnion even before 2010 began).

Yes but Prince obviously wasn't at Parra was he? IIRC he developed back at the Cowboys, what journalist would care about some kid at the cowboys?

Honestly, what do people expect from Mortz? Would it have been better if he said something pessimistic?

But he doesn't have to keep coming out to the media and saying this stuff is what i think caylo is getting at.

Could be a part of his contract, unless he's actively seeking out the media and giving them these stories.

Assuming the media are the ones chasing him at least he gives the next best answers besides 'no comment'.

Could well be. He is on the footy show a bit so he must be trying to get himself a job for after footy.

I expect him to say he is working hard at his game and he was disappointed with his form. That is fair enough, what is this bullsh*t about comparing himself to Cronk. Why did he have to put that in there, just putting pressure on himself.

Prince spent his day at the broncos (a club that always has had hype surrounding it) and was the next big this every year for about 3 years but he kept getting injured. Not once did he come out pre season and talk about how unlucky he was and how he wanted to prove everyone wrong etc etc.

Its very annoying when someone who is struggling themselves comes out and talks big, let your actions do all the talking.

That's right. As far as our sponsors go, having our club being in the papers in the off season for the right reasons is only a good thing. And having Morts as a spokesman for the team, with his famous surname and youthful good looks, would be something the club would not only approve, but also arrange. It comes down to dollars and cents. But it's pretty clear after a poor year the head honchos would be trying to get us into the papers for the right reasons to please sponsors etc. It is a bit annoying as a fan though. Especially frustrating with Mortimor because he does so much talking off the field but doesn't perform on it.

you may turn out to be 100% correct but given that he's only had the one top grade coach who, lets face it, couldn't develop him or take him to another level, I'm not so sure, i'll be very interested to see what he can do under the guidence of Kearney and Arthur.

I agree with you, Stagger. I`m not a Daniel Mortimer fan - I think that everyone knows I`d prefer to give Tom Humble first crack at the five-eight spot this year. But still there is the question about Mortimer`s performance last year. Was it second year syndrome? Was it simply that Mortimer is totally over-rated and will never make it in the NRL? Or could it be that Daniel Anderson was not a very good halves coach and couldn`t get the best out of him? Remember, none of the halves performed well last year - not Mortimer, not Keating, not Robson. Both Mortimer and Robson went backwards (or at least, Robson didn`t improve. Probably went backwards a bit.) Also consider that they played behind a pretty good forward pack that was dominating in most games. So it could well be that Mortimer improves under a different coach. Robson might, too, just quietly.

this may sound starnge but I'm not expecting our team as a unit to perform any bettwer than last season but I do get this feeling that morts will have a reasonably good year under SK, i don't know why I sense this but i really do believe in the kid.

I think we have to bear in mind that Mortimer was brought into the top grade a season or two early due to an injury crisis in 2009. It might be another season or two before we see the full extent of his ability in the halves. I'm willing to withhold judgment until 2012.

But I do think that the Eels botched the halfback recruitment in 2010. Mortimer can't be blamed for that, even if he is asked to fill a void that he isn't capable of filling.

I think we've seen the full extent of Robson's talent and we'll just have to work with it.

Daniel Mortimer will be good for you blokes. Have faith.
A current first grade coach told me that the Eels can't expect a kid to dive the car around the paddock without learning how to change the gears, talk on the phone, keep an eye out for oncoming traffic.
He told me that it is like when you first get your licence, you are nervous, edgy, unsure of what lane to drive in, aware that you have to use the blinkers and keep your wits about you.
After a few years driving experience it becomes second nature, and things happen automatically, especially when you are comfortable behind the wheel.
I thought it was a pretty good analogy. Whether or not you do, that's up to you. Just letting you know how the lad is viewed by people on the outside looking in.
