Who do you think this is?

I believe it goes to Brett Lee, Andrew Flintoff (definatly in Tests), Saqlain Mushtaq, Harbhajan Singh and Brad Williams.

I think people mention Vincent because, for a player who talks the house down, he hasn't really done a lot in his career...

I'd say Andrew Flintoff is quite over-rated as is Brett Lee & Shoaib Akhtar...

Cheers,
Ben S.

Daniel Vettori by a country mile.

I tend to agree, on the basis that New Zealand cricket relies so heavily on him despite the fact his bowling stats are modest. I had a look at his stats a few weeks back, and he hardly compares to other international spin bowlers.

The other player that is already mentioned, but takes the cake so far is Andrew Flintoff. I noticed he is rated one of England's best cricketers, and yet his bowling figures in Test cricket are hopeless. How England thinks he is a great allrounder - who knows? Perhaps in the post-Botham years they have deluded themselves and lowered the bar to give them the sense they are actually producing decent cricketers.

I also tend to throw a player like Jayasuria into the equation. He may produce a big score here and there, and perhaps a decent series, but his overall batting performances are ordinary. I think he averages in the 30s in OD and Test cricket. Some cricketers spend their careers waiting for another big one, and struggle in between. Langer is the closest Australia has to a player like this during the post-Mark Waugh era. Looks wonderful on his day, but struggles for any runs in between big centuries.

I think it's hard to have overrated and underrated players in cricket because the game is really very stats based, therefore it's (relatively) easy to see whether or not someone has been an effective player.

I agree with Vettori, he is one of the few players going around who is roundly praised despite his mediocre numbers, notice how many times admiring commentators go silent or change the subject when his career record comes up on screen before he starts bowling (particularly in ODIs).

Can't agree that Akhtar or Mushtaq are overrated. Akhtar has obviously missed a number of games for various reasons but his average is very good in tests and one-dayers. Mushtaq has tremendous figures, at one-day level especially.

Just on Flintoff. His batting (av 24) and bowling (av 47) figures need to be reversed before I will acknowledge him as an allrounder. 47 wickets at 47, 1067 runs at 24, from 27 Tests - his reputation does not run parallel with his stats.

Even his first class batting (34) and bowling (37) isn't wonderful, but importantly it is enough to justify his Test spot.

His ODI figures: 30 with the bat, 24 with the ball, are much better.

Another is Jacob Oram. He is always being talked about as a future NZ captain, our next Chris Cairns etc etc. His bowling figures are ok so far, but realistically the man is not a bowler. His stats got a lot of help in last years India series, but I am concerned that he actually seems to have gone downhill rather than improving since. I see his bowling figures blowing out over time. He is apparently a talented batsman but people are gonna start asking questions if he doesn't start showing it more consistently at international level.

Brad Williams purely for his over rated thoughts on himself. He should never be selected again!

I have to disagree with all of you on Vettori.

The reason that his stats are so modest is because he'd rather go for the extra wickets than save runs.

Let me put it this way-Would you rather have Nicky Boje or Daniel Vettori in your side? Boje has the better record, but Vettori is the better bowler.

Well you have to remember that pitches dont assist spin. Some times people bowl well and dont nesscaryly get the results.

Vettori has all the basic things and does them well. He has always done well gainst AUstralia.

Flintoff's ODI bowling especially his econ as being going down and so he is pretty accurate.

He has improved with the bat this year against South Africa but his bowling s nothing special. The only time I will say he bowled well against South Africa at Lords where he had several catches dropped.

Other then that he has underachieved his whole career.

Michael Vaughan - 653 runs aginst Australia at 63.5 and he has just taken over the captaincy and he is still getting used to the captaincy.
