Led Zeppelin Outsells The Veronicas

by Paul Cashmere - June 30 2008
With a lack of decent new music, the music buyers are rocking to the oldies. On the Australian chart this week, Led Zeppelin's 1972 album 'IV' sold more than The Veronicas first album.
Old albums by Cat Stevens, Billy Joel and Cold Chisel did better than new albums Fiest, Fergie and OneRepublic.
The artists at the top of the chart get all of the headlines but when you look past the Top 50 mark, it is obvious that it isn't the kids going into stores, it 30+ adults.
Between 50 and 60 this week, Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson, and kd lang sit alongside The Herd, The Music and Jason Mraz.
The Forest Gump Soundtrack, released in 1994, sold more than the most recent Panic At The Disco album.
Heritage artists selling out of stores last week in considerable numbers included Roy Orbison, Rod Stewart, Crowded House, Alanis Morissette, Garth Brooks, Madonna, Beach Boys and Mariah Carey.
Downloads included, the number 100 last week sold 465 units. The number 100 single did 328 units.
For CD singles (i.e.: not including downloads), the number 1 single across Australia sold 2348 units, number 10 did 770 units, number 40 sold 147 and for just 16 sales right across Australia, you would have this weeks number 100 CD single.

Thought it might be some interesting reading, especially how little singles sell!

Even David Brent sold between 30-40 singles.

How is there a lack of good new music? Maybe if you're into pop and pop-rock. But aside from that...

I'm 23 and bought a Creedence Clearwater Revival CD last week.

How do they explain that?

Also WTF is a heritage artist?

The hold steady are pretty cool, I got some of there stuff and like it.

Counting Crows and REM though, whilst have a few of there older stuff which I loved, I cant get into anymore......just not catching my attention.

Havent heard any of the others, may check them out.

My latest CDs were the Editors - an end has a start which aside from the kickass opening track is very boring and Gyroscope - breed obsession which is good without being an outright cracker.

Nothing wrong with that at all.

I have some wildly different music I get into.

When I was 20 I was listening to stuff that was 20 years old.
who cares ...if its good its good.

Have you ever seen the rain is a damn fine song.
CCR are great.

Yes but the mainstream media don't look past the mainstream Eelementary.

It's only us enlightened souls that actively search for the good stuff that's out there!

I love the old stuff, don't get me wrong.

But I alos love hitting JB Hi Fi and finding new bands I've never heard of that are simply awesome. Except when they put stuff like The Getaway Plan in the metal section...:?

Wow, just shows how some stuff is timeless, and new stuff is sh*t in comparison. Eele, not everyone has your acquired taste in music so the majority will flock to mainstream music. In the 60s etc, mainstream was the Who and the beatles... definately > Veronicas/JT etc.

---------------- Now playing: Led Zeppelin - No Quarter via FoxyTunes

does anyone else use it/have a profile there. Its for everyone who is a bot anal and like tracking what they play etc, but it has a terrific radio feature.
