By the time we get to A League V10

I think the following teams will be in the comp

1. Sydney FC
2. Melbourne Victory
3. Brisbane Roar
4. Adelaide United
5. Perth Glory
6. Newcastle Jets
7. Central Coast Mariners
8. Gold Coast United
9. North Qld Fury
10. Melbourne City
11. West Sydney
12. South Coast FC
13. Canberra City
14. Tasmania United FC
15. Darwin Heat
16. East Coast (central Qld team)
17. Port Adelaide
18. Fremantle

Maybe 2 NZ teams but I can't see it as FIFA may push them out

19. Auckland Kingz
20. Wellington Pheniox

Each team plays each over once they the local derbys are played twice

20 rounds plus top 8 finals series

eg

Sydney FC vs West Sydney
Victory vs Melbourne
Newcastle vs Central Coast
Gold Cost vs Roar
Fury vs east coast
Auckland vs wellington
South Coast vs Canberra
Adelaide vs Port
Perth vs fremantle
Darwin vs Tasmania (not a local derby I know)

I don't think the competition can sustain any more than 12, which is what they're aiming for by 2011 aren't they?

I think West Sydney and Melbourne should come in next year then spend a few years sustaining the status quo.

I think the A - League could sustain 14 teams at the most no more than that. The next two teams brought into the A - League should be West Sydney and the new Melbourne team. Teams 13 and 14 should be from Canberra and Tassie or the South Coast

So who would be your 12 team comp?

I really can see 14 teams

Sydney FC
Western Sydney
Victory
2nd Melb team
Roar
Gold Coast
Fury
Glory
Adelaide
Newcastle
Central Coast
Canberra
South Coast
Tasmanian United

South Coast will never happen until WIN gets an upgrade on the Western (?) stand and the Western Stand upgrade will not happen until an A-League team arrives. Shame really.

I don't know about Tasmania, what will they add to the league? And where will they play?

Where is Wellington? The AFC can't force them out cause FIFA want them in the league.

I wouldn't mind another kiwi side tbh, a Sheep Shagger derby would go alright imo

The comp will struggle to maintain 12 teams let alone 14.

The money and talent isn't there yet. Baby steps.

20 teams is a bit much. Also if Tasmania can't get an AFL side down there (AFL is the most popular sport down there) there would be no way they can get a soccer side down there.

I don't know how they think another Melbourne team will work. Where are they going to draw their support from? Wouldn't everyone in their proposed market already be supporting the Victory?

Anyway, ultimately I think this comp would work the best:

Sydney FC
Adelaide United
Gold Coast United
Perth Glory
Newcastle Jets
North Qld Fury
Central Coast Mariners
Wellington Phoenix
Brisbane Roar
Melbourne Victory
Melbourne Hearts (am I right in believing this is their new name?)
West Sydney (playing at Parramatta Stadium)
Canberra United
South Coast FC (Woollongong Wolves?)

If there is 20 teams I think they might be calling me up to play... and I don't even play soccer.

12 is even nearly too much for the quality of footballers in Australia

f**k off. Canberra MUST have a license. They have the most complete bid of anyone, and I fully expect FFA to announce as much on August 24th.

Why?

They'll announce the western sydney team.

A bigger and more critical market than Canberra.

Melbourne is already a done deal.

Agreed, sadly. Canberra might get a run when/if the Phoenix's time runs out. I have no gripe with their inclusion personally, but not when they're in at the expense of Australian markets.

Because, compared simply as bids, the Western Sydney bid is nowhere near what Canberra have put on the table.

And why do we need a Western Sydney team when there's already a Sydney team. Sydney's not that bloody big.

Anyway, word is that they may go to 13 teams with the next announcement, so that they can revert to 12 if (or, as it's looking more and more likely, when) the AFC decide that the Phoenix are ineligible.

Regardless, I'm still confident a Canberra licence will be announced very soon.

I think 14 teams by 2015-2017 would be terminal mass, for at least two decades.

1-Sydney FC
2-Brisbane Roar
3-Melbourne Victory
4-Adelaide United
5-Newcastle Jets
6-Perth Glory
7-Central Coast Mariners
8-Wellington Phoenix
9-Gold Coast FC
10-North Queensland Fury

With the next two in to be

11-Melbourne #2

and either

12-West Sydney or Canberra

a few years break, then

13-West Sydney or Canberra
14-South Coast FC

only other possible change to be if the Phoenix are given the boot. But I think they should stay - a competition with those 14 is well balanced IMO.

Spoken like someone who doesnt live in Sydney or western sydney - but yes, Sydney is that large.

If you look at the parts of metropolitan sydney that make up western Sydney - you've got nearly 2 million people and a 150 of Australia's top 500 ASX companies.

14 local government areas, over 70 different languages. There might be a 'Sydney' team but it's not a western Sydney team, which is it's own legitimate region.

Western Sydney is also the production line of the Socceroos. It needs it's own team, the market is simply too big. It dwarfs Canberra.
