Spoken like someone who doesnt live in Sydney or western sydney - but yes, Sydney is that large.

If you look at the parts of metropolitan sydney that make up western Sydney - you've got nearly 2 million people and a 150 of Australia's top 500 ASX companies.

14 local government areas, over 70 different languages. There might be a 'Sydney' team but it's not a western Sydney team, which is it's own legitimate region.

Western Sydney is also the production line of the Socceroos. It needs it's own team, the market is simply too big. It dwarfs Canberra.

I lived in Sydney for plenty of years. If Western Sydney was such an important market, they would have been included originally instead of teams in loser areas like Newcastle or the Central Coast.

And they are still covered by Sydney FC. A Canberra team would cover the ACT, the Eden-Monaro, Riverina, Southern Tablelands, South Coast and Southwest Slopes areas.

But hey, you could also choose to ignore the bush completely and put another team in a city that already has one.

I think we're both probably equally biased on this one. I dont think you can really say Penrith or Campbelltown.....Liverpool, Bankstown or Blacktown are covered by Sydney FC. Sydney FC's market seems to be the eastern suburbs, north shore and southern sydney and to a lessor extent the North West.

But hey, you could also choose to ignore the bush completely and put another team in a city that already has one.

But hey, you could choose to ignore the biggest football market in Australia and put a team in a market the fraction of the size that may not be able to support a side in the long term.

See....equally biased ;-)

Anyway, word is that they may go to 13 teams with the next announcement, so that they can revert to 12 if (or, as it's looking more and more likely, when) the AFC decide that the Phoenix are ineligible.

Got a quote to back that up? I've heard nothing about going to thirteen teams.

Both of which still have more right to be in the A-League than Canberra

I think it's an assumption.

IIRC I read somewhere all A-League licenses are up for renewal.

AFC would prefer to see Phoenix out of the A-League. I tend to agree. Not only are they not in Australia, they are no even in our confederation. They're the only side in the world that plays in a league outside their confederation - but the complication is I understand Fifa are happy for them to stay.

No, Newcastle ahead of Canberra because of the strength of the region and the history of football up there - but the Central Coast (at the risk of Timmah going nuts) I would rank below Canberra (however given they are already in the league it kinda doesnt matter)

I think the point was that they weren't (and still aren't) represented by any other code and are a growth region. Investing in their future potential and all that jazz.

Brisbane Roar will be gone in two year. Losing so much money playing at Suncorp, they only chance is playing at ballymore and they will only still only get 5,000.

Only there gone they bring the Strikers back and your get 15,000 easy.

The Brizzy side (whoever it may be) should be at Ballymore anyway. Excellent venue for A-League and for crowds of the size the Roar get.
