Some of the finals systems above are way too confusing....
I think we should go back to a top 5 finals format. It seems unfair that teams that lose more games than they win can make the finals under the current top 8 format.
My suggested format is as follows:
Top 5
Week 1
1st - Melbourne (Week off)
2nd - Bulldogs vs. 3rd - Brisbane - Telstra Stadium
4th - Newcastle vs. 5th - Manly - Energy Australia Stadium
Loser of 4th and 5th Eliminated
Week 2
Major Semi Final: Melbourne vs. Winner of Brisbane/Bulldogs - Olympic Park
Minor Semi Final: Loser of Brisbane/Bulldogs vs. Winner of Newcastle/Manly - Telstra Stadium/Suncorp Stadium
Loser of Minor Semi Final Eliminated
Winner of Major Semi Final progresses through to NRL Grand Final
Week 3
Qualifying Final: Loser of Major Semi Final vs. Winner of Minor Semi Final - @ Loser of Major Semi Finals Home Venue/Region
Loser Eliminated
Winner Progresses to NRL GF
Week 4
NRL Grand Final: Winner of Major Semi Final vs. Winner of Qualifying Final @ Telstra Stadium
What do u guys think?
Also, i believe that home finals should be awarded to higher ranking teams up until the NRL grand final. In the case of teams such as Dragons, Manly, Tigers, Melbourne, Warriors, Penrith etc with smaller home venues making Week 2 and 3 of the finals series as a higher ranking side the venue would be switched to a larger venue in that teams region, for example:
Warriors: Jade Stadium, Eden Park, Northharbour Stadium
Tigers: Aussie Stadium or Telstra
Melbourne: Telstra Dome, New Stadium (2008 onwards)
Dragons: Aussie or Telstra Stadium
Penrith: Aussie or Telstra Stadium
Manly: Aussie, Telstra or Central Coast
