THREE NRL clubs are poised to save the flagging career of Newcastle's unwanted and shattered forward Kirk Reynoldson.
Penrith, Canberra and North Queensland last night told The Daily Telegraph they would be prepared to negotiate with Reynoldson, who is about to be ruthlessly axed by Newcastle.
Reynoldson, 28, needs just one more NRL game to automatically trigger a $196,000 deal with the Knights for next year.
But Newcastle coach Brian Smith has told Reynoldson he is unwanted in 2008.
Reynoldson was again overlooked for tomorrow nights' match against North Queensland at EnergyAustralia Stadium.
Reynoldson's legal representatives - Davidson and Sullivan - have written to the Newcastle club threatening legal action.
The Knights yesterday replied in writing to the solicitors.
Despite most clubs experiencing salary cap restrictions for 2008, the Cowboys, Raiders and Panthers are all keen to talk with Reynoldson. The three clubs plan to contact Reynoldson's manager Les Ross once he is finally cut by the Knights.
"He's a tough and uncompromising player," said North Queensland coach Graham Murray, whose team arrived in Newcastle last night.
"It looks like he mixes things up well in attack and defence. His teammates want to play with him.
"If Newcastle don't want him, we'd certainly be interested in having a chat. In every game I've seen him play, Kirk always comes across as a valuable member of the team.
"He's tough too."
With back-rowers Bryan Norrie (Cronulla) and Matthew Cross (Gold Coast) leaving, Panthers general manager Mick Leary said Reynoldson could make an ideal replacement.
"If there's an area we're looking at it's back-row," Leary said.
"We are losing Bryan Norrie and Matt Cross so if we could get him at a good price then we'd be interested."
Canberra general manager Don Furner said his club's coaching staff had already discussed Reynoldson.
"Our coaching staff has talked about him because he can play front-row and back-row," Furner said yesterday. "That makes him a player with appeal.
"He has also come through a good system due to his days at the Melbourne Storm.
"In terms of an approach, we will at the moment just sit back and see what happens at Newcastle. But we will be watching with interest."
Gold Coast coach John Cartwright said his club had spent up to its salary cap through buying Cross and Parramatta prop Aaron Cannings.
"Back-row is an area we are looking at but we've signing Cross and Cannings so our cap is full," Cartwright said.

With all the forward depth we have for next year, we are looking to sign this hack??

This is the reason we are a mediocre club. We seem content on signing mediocre/sh*thouse players.

Inept management to say the least

Neil Henry was on the radio saying we'd only consider him if Bickerstaff retires.

The rumour going around is knights are brokering where they will pay 50% of his 195k salary so we only have to pay minium salary for first year the full the next that is why three clubs are after him it will cost over two year 200k, 50 first 145 second year

I am irate over this

All these funds should be thrown at Todd Carneys face and whatever other funds they intend to increase his pay with

This time next year Todd Carney's signature will be priceless

I believe we are also looking at Chris Beattie and Danny Nutley to cover for Logan when he comes off contract next year.

Couldn't agree more. Why not someone like Cameron Phelps from the Bulldogs.

Because he isn't as good as any of the backs we already have.

We should be trying to sign Vince Mellars.

He's a great player and despite our depth would walk into our first grade side.

Don't see what all the angst is about.

BINGO !!!

But the "successful" philosophy that this club uses is not to pay overs for any player but rather to spread the money amoungst all (including nuffheads).

Agree with the sentiments of others that we do not need the bearded wonder.

When you consider Fraw;ey was the highest paid player at the club, anything is possible with Canberra management.

Reynoldson could get offer from Raiders

Raiders captain Alan Tongue would welcome the club offering out-of-favour Newcastle forward Kirk Reynoldson a contract to move to Canberra next season. Reynoldson is likely to leave the Knights at the end of the year, threatening legal action over his non-selection in first grade for the past two weeks.
Reynoldson needs one more NRL game to trigger a $196,000 deal for 2008 but Knights coach Brian Smith has told him he is unwanted next year. The saga is set to end up in court.
Raiders general manager Don Furner confirmed yesterday the club would consider making Reynoldson an offer if he left Newcastle.
Tongue endorsed the suggestion, saying the former Melbourne Storm forward would provide a new dimension to Canberra's pack. "His footy that he's shown at Newcastle and the Storm, he's a quality player and pretty good fellow too from the sounds of things," Tongue said.
"He would fit in here definitely.
"If the club is after him ... that's their decision to make, but I think he would be great for the club."
Canberra coach Neil Henry agreed. Henry confirmed he had discussed the possibility of Reynoldson moving to the nation's capital next year but that the Raiders had not made an offer.
"I think he's a seasoned, experienced campaigner and a very consistent footballer," Henry said.
"He's 28 years old but he's had no serious injuries and would be very valuable to any club.
"We've talked about it, but that's about as far as it's got. Realistically we're not in a position to make an offer."
Canberra's salary cap is nearing its $4million limit, which would make it difficult for the club to actively pursue Reynoldson.
But Furner confirmed he would "keep a close eye" on proceedings at Newcastle before possibly making an official offer.
"It will depend on what price Kirk and his manager are asking, but he's definitely a player we have a lot of time for," Furner said.
Raiders forward Matt Bickerstaff remains unsure whether he will continue at the club next year.
Bickerstaff is sidelined with a knee injury and went to a specialist yesterday.
He will meet Raiders doctor Kylie Selwood today before deciding on his playing future.
Bickerstaff still has a year to run on his contract but if his knee injury forces him into retirement, it would free money for the Raiders to use in a bid to lure Reynoldson to Canberra.
"I'd love to stay on next year but it's something I can't really commit to until I see the doctor again," Bickerstaff said.
In other team news injury-plagued second-rower Tom Learoyd-Lahrs will miss Sunday's round 24 NRL clash against the Brisbane Broncos after he suffered a quadricep injury at training on Wednesday. Henry has elevated Joe Picker into the squad to travel to Brisbane.
SUNDAY
Canberra Raiders v Brisbane Broncos, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane, 2pm. TV Time: Live on Fox Sports3.

I would rather they kept Rothery than pick up another veteran like Reynoldson. We already have Miller, Turner and Plum all of who are similar types. Not only that if Rothery was to have a good year and make the top side he is also an excellent goal kicker which looks to be an issue if Dobson fails to become our regular half. Just on TLL, he is fast becoming the new Michael Weyman.

I don't know about tll being the next weyman

What i do know is that all players who have come back from major injury this year have picked up another very quickly

Bickerstaff, TLL, Howell, Goodwin, Best, Miller, Jones, Tongue, and who can forget Weyman, also Graham was playing injured, Which leads me to ask the question?

Is it our strength and conditioning coach, Rehab policy, Desperation, or sheer bad luck ?
