MY son had a choice!

Between playing Soccer, League or AFL and he chose the latter, he's 8 years old this year and all his mates in school either play AFL or Football (soccer) . I spoke to a guy who is with the Calamvale Leopards and he said it's been unbelieveable this preseason the amount of kids wanting to play in 2006 even after the Lions had an ordinary year! Says alot for the marketing of the game up here, would be interesting to see the figures for other states where AFL isn't the #1 sport!!!

long way to go yet chilidude

my sons played soccer and AFL as well, they tend to change their mind alot at that age, its also got a lot to do with the evnironment imo

thats why all victorian kids play AFL, they have no choice

its good that your son has a choice

In schools or at clubs?

At schools, both soccer and football is offered.

At club level - There are as many soccer clubs as football clubs and theres plenty of Rugby Union and Rugby League clubs around.

Lack of choice is no excuse.

Soccer clubs all over the place mate and even back when I was in the upper years of Primary School (1991-1992) we played soccer, not footy.

That's totally different to lack of choice ;-)

Most 8 year olds don't wanna play full contact sport anyways.

I played soccer till my early teens then I played AFL....... he'll change a few times before he is 18.....What is RU and RL again?????

I think RL will suffer as a kids sport when half the players in junior teams are frickin' giants.
I know I wouldn't want to be smashed by some of those Islander kids six foot tall [/stereotype].

Well for kids growing up in VIC the precence of RL is Zero. Media Contract after Media Contract the NRL/ARL sell it's self short though inept manageing and a lack of confidence in the great product that they control. Stupid NSW CEO's

It's not that bad.

I'm only 180cm tall and I can only remember being hammered bad enough to end up going off the field twice (in the same game).

I played from 10yo to 18yo in Victoria against mostly Maori and Islander opposition and I certainly never struggled. Again, that's just another excuse.

If the clubs marketed themselves better, they would pick up a lot more kids. Sadly, most are happy to just exist with ex-pats playing for them, be it Kiwi's Islanders or Northerners rather than go out an actively promote the game.

Yeah but not every bloke goes to a Bulldogs (RL) game and walks up to 4 huge bulldogs supporters and starts giving them lip

the leopards play across from the new calamvale school? [literally the back fence]
if so, newish junior team parks next to newish school, in newish area- a smart idea for any junior footy team

Junior rugby league has the best organised pathway for juniors. Junior Unionis a joke with it being virtually touch football until U/12's, and Auskick lifted its program from the Kids 2 Kangaroos with a few editions. But still looks like throwing a ball into a cage of monkeys!

Lots of people play one sport as a kid but hand over money as an adult to support a totally different sport.

Get 'em watching RL on TV and take 'em to games..

Playinh a sport as a youngster doesn't mean they'll support it as an adult...

Fans of RL are made many ways..

using the national team, the kangaroos, is a great way to get them emotionally connected to the game... AFL can't do that with a national team.
