My Team of The Century

I've based my decisions basically on the players I have seen in real life or seen highlights of on the television or videos. If I haven't seen much of a player I don't consider them for voting.
I also included a small summary of the player that should explain why I chose them.

Fullback - Darren Lockyer

- Darren Lockyer is a stunning attacking force, who always lifts himself to big match occasions. Has an exciting vision with the ball in hand that is backed up by an elegant running style aswell as smoothe and silky passing and kicking skills. Not the biggest player ever, however his defence is unbreakable due to a superb technique. Unfortunately I never saw Clive Churchill play so I couldn't really pick him as the greatest fullback I have ever seen, even though he is known as the greatest player to ever play the game.

Wingers - Andrew Ettinghausen and Eddie Lumsden

- Andrew Ettinghausen was a classic back with superb speed and balance and will be remembered as one of the true champions of the modern era. He scored over 150 tries in club football and played over 300 first grade games, so really the stats tell the story for "ET".

- Eddie Lumsden was one of the games most powerful wingers, who was once described by team mate Johnny King as "a devastating runner who was almost impossible to stop once he got a sniff of the tryline." Prolific tryscorer for the Dragons who finished his career with 136 tries from 158 games, a remarkable record.

Centres - Reg Gasnier and Mal Meninga

- Reg Gasnier was the "Prince of Centres", and was one of a kind. There was no other player in the game that had his astonishing acceleration and body swerve and I don't think the likes of him will be ever seen again. His career ended with three Kangaroo tours, including one as captain, six premierships with the mighty Dragons and 127 tries from 125 matches. There will never be another "Puff The Magic Dragon" again in my eyes.

- Mal Meninga was a destructive centre with an amazing list of accolades. He overcame many career threatening broken arms to achieve some astonishing landmarks such as the most tests for the Kangaroos ever (45) aswell as most points ever for the Kangaroos (272). Also captained the Raiders to three premierships, retiring in triumph in 1994.

Five Eighth - Brad Fittler

- Brad Fittler has achieved just about every honour this great game has to offer. Made his first grade debut at the young age of 17 and never took a backward step. Has the strength and power to play in the forwards and the creativity and pace to play in the backs. One of the greatest playmakers of the modern era who created and scored tries with an enormous sidestep made possible through his massive hip strength.

Halfback - Andrew Johns

- Andrew Johns is seen by many throughout the world as the greatest player to ever grace a football field. Sensational vision and creativity, however the thing that seperated him from the other halfback contenders was his defence. Attacking teams tend to target halfbacks, however you don't target "Joey". A punishing defender, who let's the weight of the player and his general awesome technique do the talking. There has never been a player who has dominated a game of football more then Johns and he will no doubt one day go down in the history books as one of Rugby League's Immortals.

Lock - John Raper

- Johnny Raper was and is one of a kind both on and off the field. No player in the history of the game was able to play the most devastating football ten minutes into the game and still be playing with the same intensity ten minutes untill fulltime. Raper was a rugby league revolutionary who set the standard for lock forwards that every player since has attempted to emulate. Raper invented the art of cover defence and his amazing sweeping runs across field to cut down soaring wingers became the central focus point of his sensational bag of tricks. His career included three Kangaroo tours and eight premierships with St George.

Second Row - Norm Provan and Gorden Tallis

- Norm Provan was a gigantic second rower of the 50's and 60's who is best remembered for epic deeds with St George, where he played in ten consecutive grand final winning sides. He was big, strong and intelligent as a footballer, and will always be known for his mudied image with Arthur Summons following the 1963 grand final which was portrayed on the "Winfield Cup."

- Gorden Tallis is know universally as the NRL's most destructive forward and has been the Broncos chief striking weapon up front for many years now. A devastating runner of the football, backed up by punishing acts in defence. An amazing motivator who can pull a team together when times are tough.

Hooker - Steve Walters

- Steve Walters was an intelligent footballer who always did the job required of him. Has been described by many as the finest hooker of the modern era who's career highlights included being man of the match in the 1992 World Cup final at Wembley. He won three premierships with the Raiders and played 15 tests for Australia.

Front Row - Paul Harragon and Arthur Beetson

- Paul Harragon was 109kg of sheer power and destruction, who was known for the amazing contrast from his personality on and off the field. On the field, he was known as a devastating attacker and defender, who from time to time lost his cool, however off the field was known for his kind heart and tenderness towards his supporters.

- Arthur Beetson was a player of unrivalled ability. He was tough and skillful, yet was one of the game's great personalities who backed up his extroadinary hit ups with remarkable off loads. It was impossible to wrap Artie up....

Notable Mentions

Brian Clay
Wally Lewis
Laurie Daley
Graeme Langlands
Billy Smith
Ken Irvine

Hopefully that's a fair analogy for my selections.

Hey Firmo I like how you havent included many legends of the past except 4 Dragons lol :D I'm actually very surprised you didn't fit Graeme Langlands in there somwehere. But i mean Fittler at 5/8? come on. Lewis, Kenny, Daley, Fulton & Vic Hey come before Fittler. I don't think Johns deserves it either. And Tallis definitely doesn't. You even called him a silverback gorilla LOL

this is my lot. Going from research I've done over many years as im only 22.

1. Clive Churchill
2. Harold Horder
3. Reg Gasnier
4. Bobby Fulton
5. Ken Irvine
6. Wally Lewis
7. Peter Sterling
8. Arthur Beetson
9. Steve Walters
10. Glenn Lazarus
11. Norm Provan
12. Bob McCarthy
13. John Raper

And With my own eyes:

1. Lockyer
2. Boustead
3. Meninga
4. Daley
5. Grothe
6. Lewis
7. Sterling
8. Lazarus
9. Walters
10. Harrogan
11. Sironen
12. Clyde
13. Fittler

Its always difficult. Everytime I've done one of these team of the century things, I'm always leaving so many good players out - even after picking two teams.

I try to base my selections on seen, read and heard. Records sometimes do speak for themselves but other times, I simply have to go on what I've witnessed.
If there's a deadlock, 'what I've seen' will nudge out 'what I've read'.... if you know what I mean.

The most contentious positions are fullback and halfback. But truth is, I never have trouble with the No.1 jersey. IMO, Langlands was the most gifted player I have ever seen. He was a perfectly balanced runner.... I don't think I've seen a better side step. He had all the skills and probably could play anywhere plus he has a record that does indeed speak for itself.

Fullback: Graeme Langlands
Wingers: Ken Irvine, Johnny King
Centres: Reg Gasnier, Dave Brown
Five Eighth: Brett Kenny
Halfback: Peter Sterling
Lock: John Raper
Second Row: Norm Provan, Gorden Tallis
Props: Athur Beetson, Kevin Ryan
Hooker: Ken Kearney (c)

Res: Frank Burge, Bob Fulton

With so many captains in the side, I made Killer the skipper because no one would dare stand up to him.

Some players that missed out and should fit a second team or even a third team:
Churchill, Fairfax, Messenger, Meninga, Blacklock, Ettinghausen, Lumsden, Grothe, B Smith, A Johns, Brian Clay, R Coote, B McCarthy, J Sattler, Walters, Ian Walsh, John O'Neill, Craig Young etc etc....

I have chosen mine based on research and legend status as much as anything else.

1. Churchill - Definitely a hard position to pick. Langlands would go very close and Lockyer, Jack, Eadie etc would not be too far behind.

2. Irvine - His try scoring feats are legendary.

3. Gasnier - Definitely deserves one spot, very few people, if any, can match his feats.

4. Brown - Anyone who is compared with the don bradman must have been hard to beat. That alone, puts him slightly ahead of Dally Messenger and Bob fulton and Gene Miles.

5. Boustead - Definitely the hardest position to pick for me, Martin Offiah was a chance, as was Sailor, O'Conner or even the great Langlands (out of position). But, Boustead was as good as any.

6. Lewis - No doubts or questions here. No one has come close to Lewis.

7. Boston - There were several excellent candidates here and several could have got the nod, but the legendary Boston was as good as any.

13 Raper - Raper is widely regarded as the best lock to play the game and it is hard to argue.

12 Provan - The St George great deserves his spot in the second row.

11 McCarthy - One of the best back rowers ever to play the game.

10 Beetson - His deeds are legendary.

9 Cunningham - Most Australians usually consider Steve Walters the best hooker ever. The fact is that Cunningham has nearly always put in a man of the match style effort, even in losing sides against Walters or any other aussies when i see him.

8 Harragon - Has as good a record in big games as anyone.

13 Grahame - Probably the best Kiwi forward ever to play the game
14 Sattler - Tough as Nails second rower
15 Filipaina - Possibly the only reserve grader to be considered
16 Langlands - Too Good not to be there

Coach: Bob Bax - Quite Comfortably.
Ref: Barry Gomersall - Just ahead of Bill Harrigan

Fittler and Johns have the be the Half/fight eight spot no matter wat any1 says

How could Fittler possibly be the starting 5/8 for the team of the century when he was not considered good enough to be the starting 5/8 for Australia or NSW for the majority of his career. Laurie Daley forced him to Lock or into the centres and it was only when Laurie retired (and during superleague) that Fittler was chosen at 5/8.

For anyone to leave out Wally Lewis from 5/8th has just got to be blind crazy or biased. I am a Queenslander but I don't like him at all. He didn't come from my team in Queensland, he isn't a really likeable person, and he is pretty arrogant. I have never liked him. But I have to admit, he is the best player I have ever seen on a football park.

Laurie Daley was also a better 5/8th than Fittler, by a long way.

Amen, fittler wasn't even the best 5/8 of his generation.

As you said, anyone who knows the 90's, knows Fittler played 2nd fiddle to Laurie Daley.

And people naming Sing and McDougall.... pfft.

Instead of all these lists, could we like starts with Dead Certs.

3. Reg Gasnier
13. John Raper
8. Artie Beetson

They are the only 3 spots I can think of that should not be argued about.

Here's mine:

1. Lockyer
2. Mullins
3. Ettingshausen
4. Meninga
5. Wishart
6. Daley
7. Sterling
8. Lazarus
9. Walters
10. Pay
11. Tallis
12. Clyde
13. Fittler

Im not biased or anything, but I hardly saw Lewis play. I grew up watching in the late 80s and in the early 90s. Mostly saw Canberra greats like Daley, Meninga, Clyde, Walters.

And if I was to pick 2 other centres it would have to be McGregor and Renouf.

The best ones who are currently playing are Hindmarsh, Lockyer, Buderus, Webcke and Gower.

What a surprise to see Raiders fans say Daley was much better than Fittler. They were both great players and because both had to be in the team Fittler played lock. Just as Johns was forced to hooker for Kimmorley. That of course doesnt mean Kimmorley was better.

This is a thread naming great players but as usual, just because Freddy is a Rooster, he's copping a load of BS. Can you just leave it out for one thread and stop being ignorant? Give him some credit just as i give credit to a legend like Daley.

To the person who had Boston at half...you cant be talking about Billy because he was a winger. And this team should be called the Aus Team of the Century because there are plenty of great Brits who deserve a mention but dont get one beacuse most of us havent seen them play. For example, Alex Murphy is the greatest half ever.
