I think it all points to him stepping back for dominant players. But each to his own. He's thriving as the primary playmaker now and however we saw his past few years is irrelevant to his present and future form.
I don’t see Cleary so much as a ‘playmaker’, more as the teams direction. He’s playing very well, but his best attributes are competitiveness, defence and kicking. I don’t think much has changed in terms of his actual playmaking. He’s just not a natural in that area.
(I’d like to stress, please anyone don’t take this as a big criticism of Cleary. He’s admitted himself he’s not really a playmaker, he doesn’t put on many try assists. He’s just not that type of half)
