Reading the speculation about Gary Freeman being fired as Kiwi coach made me wonder: How much of a full-time job is it? Does Freeman coach any other teams? The Kangaroo coach is also an NRL coach, right? What about Waite in GB? How much time would these coaches spend coaching the national side, since the international matches are not very frequent?
I assume the RU coaches are more full-time, since they have a longer international season. But what do Eddie Jones and John Mitchell do when the Wallabies and All Blacks are not together. I'm sure they watch S12 games to keep up with the players' form. I guess I'm asking how many months a year does the job involve.
In the NBA (US)or NHL(Canada and US teams), they pick a current club coach to coach the Olympic team. In the NBA, particularly, they seem to rotate the position every Olympics or World Championship, no on has done it twice yet. The coaches would only do much actual coaching of the Olympic team during a short training period before the comp. Of course, the NBA may re-think their approach after their poor showing in the recent WC's. In the NBA and NHL, club play takes precedence over international play, unlike union and soccer.
BTW, Canada coach Jay Triano was named a Toronto Raptors assistant coach after the worlds. He is still the national coach too. it was a big boost for us Canadian basketball coaches, although at my age I don't think I'll go any higher than high school.
