I'm happy with Benji at 7 but he has to run the ball. I don't care about the number on his jersey or if he predominately plays a little tighter. The problem is that he simply isn't running the ball.
It is a massive problem at the moment and as a Benji fan I think his play has been terrible the past couple of weeks and this has been his worst season in a long time.
Benji has to turn his season around and we also need the other backs to play well. Sirro was terrible against the Dogs. Lawrence was back into form but he has had an average season. Ryan is consistently good so I don't see him as an issue. Moltzen is pretty much our most elusive and quick outside back but he can be inconsistent - he needs to fire.
Too many backline players are simply inconsistent with Benji being the worst offender but I really don't think we are that far off if those players become consistent.
A backline with Grant, Lawrence, Moltzen and Benji has plenty of pace in it. Ryan is consistently good and Utai has been on fire all year. Sirro is a big guy and has shown that he can run the ball - he has to be given a specific role because he has also looked John Morris like at times. I suppose you could put Humble at 7 and Benji at 6 but Humble looks all over the place as well.
Well if you haven't realised, nor noticed it yet, you either have Benji at 7 who gives you what he's currently dishing up, or Benji at 6, who runs the ball.
He doesn't run the ball when at 7. It's just that simple and the stats back it up.
With Moltzen, Sironen and Anasta at the club next year as well as Benji, someone has to play 7 and Benji has to be in the halves.
So we're stuck with the prospect of Benji as 7 for next year as well.
Regarding Benji's defence. Pretty sure he favours his left shoulder and tries to hide his right in defence. Something he can't do when defending on the side of the field he currently is. Yet another reason to put him back at 6. He defends on his preferred side and defends better, and is able to get more space to actually create something and to run at the line.
