New ad scandal for NRL

THE NRL has been forced to pull its Anzac Day ad campaign for the Roosters Dragons clash after complaints over the use of the Last Post.

The 30 second TV and radio ads, which open with the Last Post, have been airing since the weekend to promote the traditional Anzac Day match between the great rivals.

But the campaign has been pulled and redubbed after complaints it was commercialising the battle ode.

NRL marketing director Paul Kind said despite being approved by the RSL, the Last Post had been removed from the ads to avoid causing offence.

The new ads will go to air tonight.

"The last thing we want to do on the Anzac Day game, which we think has got wonderful tradition, and is a great place for people to go and take part in an officially sanctioned ceremony, is offend anybody and we have altered the ad," Mr Kind said.

I must admit that when I first saw and heard the ads promoting this game I thought they did cross the line in regards to the underlying theme of the ads were that if you didn't attend the game you were being disrespectful to the ANZACS.
It can sometimes be a fine line to paying respect and using the ANZAC symbol for promotional purposes.

if the RSL didn't have a prob then who would :?

and it looks like they've chosen to pull the ad, not been forced

The article clearly says "after complaints it was commercialising the battle ode"

So obviously some people did have a problem with it.

Without sounding corny,

I think some people get thw dirts with sportsmen being portrayed as heroes.

The diggers who died face down in the mud are the heroes.

They are the reason we live the way we live today.

Like I said, I do not want to sound corny, but I believe that this is where the issue lies.

Steve Waugh is my hero, he is the reason a whole lot of people my age (37) began to play cricket and learned to never give up whenj the going got tough.

Always remember to love this country, it is the best by far

how have they promoted previous anzac day clashes?

i'm more concerned about the vb ad which is hiding alcohol consumption amongst a false sense of partiotism

IMO some people get very precious about these things.

The add was approved by the RSL. Some need to take a deep breath and recognise this game is a chance for rugby league to honour past veterans. The more people get to the game , the more special it will be.

I agree the VB ad is far worse. Rugby League has a long tradition of commemorating the Anzacs with this fixture, I'm not sure where VB gets off..

Given the VB ads, I'm astonished that this has been pulled. It probably shows more than anything that at least the NRL has a corporate conscience.

So what's the bugler playing in the photo on this website?
http://www.afl.com.au/

it's part of the very respectful pre-match for Coll V Ess which is sponsored by the RSL and the Army. can't imagine anyone would have a problem wit that
tbh.

i'm not sure what all the fuss is about, really, its not like either sport doesn't pay its due respects to the ANZAC tradition.

why is it a scandal? Wouldn't you call it a misunderstanding. The NRL asked the people who are most influenced by the ad and they said okay.

Rugby League is extremely respectful to war veterans and always has been.
