Australia will have its own provincial rugby competition in 2006 after the ARU approved the establishment of a four-team competition.

Australia's four Super 14 teams will take part in the tournament in a five week June/July window from 2006.

ARU Chairman Dilip Kumar says the proposed APC is just the beginning, and a competition expansion is tipped.

"From the ARU's perspective, we have taken a vital step for the game in Australia. We are engaged in very positive discussions with our Member Unions and the strong sense that we have a golden opportunity here is appreciated by everyone."

ARU Managing Director Gary Flowers says a feasibility study will be conducted into the expansion of the APC in the future.

"We will consult with all our stakeholders in carrying out a thorough feasibility assessment and risk analysis," he said.

"There is the further potential for two Japanese teams to join the competition in the future and perhaps play some non competition games next year."

Flowers said the ARU hoped to minimise the impact on club rugby.

"We believe these extra high quality matches will provide a boost for clubs because of the number of players who will benefit from performance at the higher level.," he said.

"A significant amount of work has gone into developing the APC concept from a commercial, high performance and logistical perspective. Now the Board has signed off, we can begin more detailed work in conjunction with the Super 14 Unions."

Yep, I'm laughing already!!!

Wasn't the idea to improve the depth of Australian Rugby? How the hell is having exactly the same number of elite players playing for longer going to do that? If anything it's going to hurt Australia because those same hundred-odd players are just going to have moree opportunity to get injured. Still those cups are looking mighty fine in the NZRFU trophy cabinet, and I'm glad they'll be staying for a while!

Easy guys ! I know it was the hardest decision by the states to agree on this but at lease we are heading in the right direction .
Don't forget there's Melbourne and other states still to come in the future . We now have a new structure at the ARU (QLD & NSW less power) and it all seem good for the game .
The club comps are the only concerned so in the future we will see all club comps become amateurs and the APC/ASC will take priority .

Well Done Australia and espeacilly NSWRFU for not voting against changes . Shame on QRU for trying to hold on to power .

I would much rather have seen a 10-12 team domestic comp. This APC will get boring fast and no body will turn up. Then what is the ARU going to do?
Last time they did something like this they ditched it the next year.

Also teams that don't have many Wallabies picked will be have nearly the same team as they did in the Super 14. What is the point of that. I thought we were meant to increase our depth after the Super 14.

What good is grassroots rugby when we only have 4 teams to put them in. Where is John O'Niel when you need him.

Can anyone say 'Ricoh Championship'

The NRL and AFL must be laughing their heads off at their so called competition.

When will ARU grow some gonads ? they are letting NSWRU and QRU dictate the growth of the game. Very very sad.

The NSWRU wants to take it in the right direction.

Todays telegraph had an article saying the NSWRU may blackball the idea completely because they want a 10-14 team National Club Competition, not this rediculous Asia-Pacific thing.

is 10-14 teams potentially too many though? I'dve thought 8-10 teams maximum would be ideal as it wouldn't spread the talent too far.

I agree 8-10 team comp and after a couple of seasons if the depth is big enough grow it by another couple of teams.

I think 10-12 is the best in order to spread the game everywhere.

Especially when you consider that around 8 clubs would be existing Sydney and Brisbane club sides, so the only places you need to create new clubs from scratch would be regional centres.

The NSWRU is slating the 4 team concept, saying it will eventually die to lack of interest like the old Ricoh Challenge did. Since the state teams won't have their Wallabies, people might not see them as the genuine article - at the least, it'll be a challenge to convince people to watch these teams outside S14.

The NSWRU think it will also damage Sydney club Rugby. The ARU could placate them by getting club Rugby to start in March, end in August; hold the new provincial comp in September/October after club Rugby ends. However I guess they probably think they couldn't compete against NRL and AFL Finals (John O'Neill would have competed when he was at the ARU, and will do it with the A League).

BiV, fair point that the S14 teams will now play each other at least three times over the course of the season.

For this new comp, would it be better to replace NSW and QLD each with two teams? The teams could be a Sydney team, a NSW Country team, a Brisbane team and a QLD Country team and could be picked on an Origin basis from club Rugby, a la RL's City Country teams. Speaking of NSW, all the best players play in Sydney in the Tooheys New Cup and Shute Shield, so it would add the intermediate rep tier between club and state/S14 for them.

Adding ACT, WA and two Japanese teams could give us an Asia Pacific Super 8. That would truly be an interesting comp.

As for Timbo and the NSWRU's suggestions, forming a 8, 10, 12 team national club competition won't increase interest in the club game. Premier Rugby and the Toohey News Cup didn't attract any extra spectators or viewers that the Shute Shield didn't already have.

Usually i'm not happy with NSW interferring with our 3rd tier comp but this time I agree. No way they should want to commit players to this crap comp. At least one State is seeing the light.

Look, they need to follow the soccer example, create a new competition from scratch, IMO, the following areas need representation:

-Sydney
-Brisbane
-Newcastle
-Canberra
-North Queensland
-Melbourne
-Perth

With potential for teams from:

-Gold Coast
-Woolongong
-Central Coast
-Adelaide
-2nd Sydney (west or north)

So at the base level, 7 teams, with 12 at a top end.

The infastructure and funds are at hand to bring it in, my question is, WHAT'S TAKING SO LONG!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
