Alex Turner is still a panache-laden wordsmith but it's not as fiery or punchy as the first two albums. Seems the Last Shadow Puppets side project has them affecting a mellower croon. Not a bad thing, mind. It's still endearing stuff - the Monkeys have outlived the hype and are one of the great bands of the day

can't believe nobody else has replied to this thread.
a killer album on it's own merits. turner has left the observational witticisms in the back catalogue in favour of dark and abstract imagery. every thundering guitar riff and malign lead break attests to homme's omnipresence.
i've long been a fan of matt helder's audacious drumming and this album is no exception; at times it's bordering on ostentatiousness.
"pretty visitors" was an early favourite, "cornerstone" has since knocked it off it's perch however.
