"New band The Black Keys"

Unfortunate enough to have to sit through twenty minutes of some commercial radio station at the barbers today and heard this phrase. The 'dj' (term used loosely in this instance) must be dense.

Deadset that will do me. These friggin animals plunder anything decent, package it, market it and all of a sudden it's on a top 40 countdown. Rubbish.

I guess I posted this so my righteous indignation would be at home with like-minded souls that can be found on this forum. If nothing else, at least Auerbach and Carney are making some good dosh to bring us their fabulous tunes.

I gave up on commercial radio a long time ago. The music is just as vacuous as the early morning radio show hosts. Man I even get pissed when these early morning losers pop up on my TV during the evening, telling me to tune in to their dross. That one with Hamish & Andy on it from what I recall, can't remember the name, don't want to.

A work mate even commented that when he moved over from the US he couldn't believe there were 4 Brisbane channels playing the exact same pop rubbish. He's a metal fan and is completely perturbed by the lack of diversity across the Australian radio market. He refers to the mainstream producers as a bunch of sheep only playing what the Government wants them to play (i.e. dumb music to control the population).

I have a clock radio I wake up to and while I'm not a big fan of Triple J at least most of their music doesn't aggravate the hell out of me in the morning (Australian hip hop like Bliss N' Eso excluded).

I've heard some positive things about digital radio but I don't have one of those yet. Not sure if its true but there was a rumour about a "Radio X" style channel being created (based on the GTA San Andreas game channel). I'd love to wake up to some RATM in the morning, Bulls on Parade would go down a treat.

For now I'm quite happy plugging in my iPod while I listen to some In Flames on the bus ride to work :)

Anyone who bothers with commercial radio deserves the inevitable and subsequent pain.

Back to topic though, 'El Camino' is a highly enjoyable album.

All radio is crap, haven't listened to a station in years, at least I know I'm going to hear music I like if I just use my CDs.

There have only been 2 radio shows ever worth listening to: This Sporting Life, and Martin-Molloy.

Our radio stations and djs are pretty awful, I stopped listening to the radio when I was 14, though I did still listen to Kroq a US station for awhile. But the only crap they really play is The Killers and Paramore.

Now the only place I really get exposed to radio stations is at the climbing gym, grocery store and in one of my friend's car. The talk is generally as bad as the music and both are excruciating to listen to.

I was really surprised when I heard them popping up on the radio at work and on Channel V but "new band"?!?! f**k me dead that is deplorable. I saw them on their very first tour in 2003 and I was hooked. They also did a little intimate instore at the old Gaslight Records in Melbourne where I got my copy of thickfreakness signed...and one of the greatest nights of my life was watching them play new years at Falls in 2004.

I didn't buy Brothers or El Camino but I loved Catch and Release. Magic Potion left a lot to be desired. Big Come Up is by far their most underrated and thickfreakness is awesome to have sex to :)

It's the same story in the US, just punk and metal have their own dedicated radio stations, they certainly aren't any less mainstream though, every 2nd or 3rd song is alexisonfire or rise against, may not be 'mainstream' here, but stations over there are just as guilty thrashing songs irrespective of how good they are, to death.

Australia has one of the most diverse radio stations you're likely to find anywhere in the world in JJJ. Unfortunately you can't avoid trash on any other station.

I heard the same term a few years ago when a Nova DJ put on "Sex On Fire" and said this new band called Kings Of Leon are really great.

Only By The Night was their fourth album for f**k sake!

I had a similar experience with Kings Of Leon back in 03. At the time I considered them to be the best live act I'd seen.

I get the sense though that they've sought out becoming commercial. Not sure if I could say the same about The Black Keys but I've yet to hear the new album in full.

Magic Potion was a tremendous album for me, surprised you didn't like it.

Don't worry guys commercial radio will be dead soon enough. Its last stronghold was the car but even now you can connect your ipod in via AUX and listen to a podcast or your own music. f**k you can connect your phone and play some internet radio if you have a decent enough data allowance.

http://news.consumerreports.org/car...aru-honda-add-internet-radio-integration.html

Honda and Subaru plan to offer Aha radio in upcoming models. Honda hasn’t announced details, but Subaru says Aha will provide access to tens of thousands of stations, including on on-demand music from MOG and Rhapsody; Internet radio from Shoutcast, CBS, and Slacker; live news; podcasts from NPR and others; free audio books; personalized traffic reports; Facebook and Twitter news feeds; and user restaurant reviews and recommendations from Yelp.

Subaru Aha operation will be integrated into the controls of an optional built-in audio system. The free Aha app for the iPhone is available now in iTunes; and Android version is promised in early 2012. Subaru has not released specifics regarding availability and cost.

Meanwhile, Ford has partnered with iHeartRadio, to bring some 800 live and digital stations into vehicles, along with user generated content. Accessed through SYNC with AppLink, Ford owners will have the option of operating the radio through voice or steering-wheel mounted controls.

Needs more "Get This"...

It's axing, 4 years on, is still seen by a lot as a big cluster f*** of a decision by Triple M. Still much prefer to listen to their podcasts than anything on the radio today.

For me, it's really only ABC radio for the footy and cricket, and the rest of the time it's CDs or the MP3 player hooked up through the AUX.

Irish radio is the worst, Jerry, the worst. The lead story on the national news station yesterday was a pedestrian being knocked over (not killed) in Galway.

I sometimes stream ABC or JJJ when I’m at home on the computer. Though I do feel like I’ve moved out of JJJ’s demographic now & I’m not always in the mood for talk.

These days I usually just get recommendations from forums and what-not, then Youtube the bans and buy the albums (yes, I still buy music).

I downloaded every full Get This episode from purehumbug.com – I listen to them at home, sitting on my couch, rolling a fat cigarette and waiting for another handout.
