New centre of excellence

I feel much the same as you. Bruce Gordons contribution to the Dragons appears to be limited to commercial decisions like buying out the Illawarra side of the joint venture, and purchasing the sponsorship rights for WIN stadium. Maybe there's a lot more to it than that but I can't see it.

Still, who do you name the Centre of Excellence after if it's not Bruce Gordon? The other big names that spring to mind are Craig Young, Peter Doust or Bob Millward. Can you imagine the outcry, even if they have all probably contributed a lot more to St George-Illawarra than Bruce Gordon.
Use the name for sponsorship money I guess is the option, though I’m less concerned over the naming.

Does it have to be named after someone?- as an earlier poster suggested, it could be a sponsorship opportunity.

Firstly: there are no good billionaires. Secondly, this naming choice is so ridiculous and silly it borders on laughable. But hey, ultimately, this entire pastime of "rugby league" is ridiculous and stupid when you stop and think about it. Watching young men and women bash themselves chasing a white rubber ball around while wearing pretty matching clothes? It's all very silly. When a training facility for these young people is named after a reclusive billionaire in the Bahamas we're starkly reminded of that simple fact

What a joke naming it after a billionaire whom we hear nothing about. We hear the name Politis, Laundy etc thrown around and going to their games, seen in the sheds, but never heard Bruce Gordon mentioned attending a game mind you.

They should have named it after a player from Illawarra who played his whole career there and gave 100% in every game. Someone like Rod Wishart. I think he scored the winning try that won St George Illawarra their first game off a Nathan Brown Bomb against Canberra in the dying minutes.

That may also temp his son to return to the club and train at the COE named after his dad.

Naming the centre after Bruce Gordon is pathetic unless he made a big tax deduction of money for the centre
If so they should tell us the amount

Politics the board all bend over for the Gordons. What have they done in 25 years since the JV .
The club has had 1 GF win 2010 with only 1 or 2 finals football since then .

The COE isn't just for the Dragons. It's being built in partnership with the UOW and will be used by a few different sporting organisations in the area. Bruce Gordon has apparently contributed significant sums to the UOW over the years and given he also bought out the Steelers of the JV in the not too distant past, it does speak to why they are naming it after him.

To be honest i don't care if they call it the Windang Palace as long as it helps produce better players for the Dragons.

Agree mate. They can call it "Shit Sandwich COE" for all I care. The key should be that it provides a competitive advantage to the team and the club (both on and off the field) going forward.

I was just providing a perspective on why it's been named after Gordon.
