It showed that metallica knew St Anger was not a good album, hiring a big name, big cost, producer to be involved over the course of your writing and recording a new album is really the ultimate way of saying "Man, we f*cked up". I like the new song, and I thought the Ramones cover they did was quite interesting, not to mention the fact they played some absolute classics they never play that much (e.g. Leper Messiah and Orion).
