I hate to say it, but I think it looks quite good (Apart from the fact the clubs colors are terrible of course) - Reverting back to stripes on the back is a fantastic look. Not too sure about the white patch, but I suppose there is no other real way to make the numbers visible.

All up, stripes down the back as opposed to a blank back gets the :thumb

Does anyone know of any other guernsey changes for 2006?

I have a mate who is a crows supporter and he said they have a new alternate strip that is mainly red in colour. Said it was going to be used against Melbourne this year.

Indeed.

It makes one wonder why they changed from that design to begin with??!!

Probably for the same reason Richmond ruined it's guernsey and removed the sash off the back.

Of course, seduced by knob marketing majors!

No doubt the father's of the people who conned the Footscray board into changing their name to Western as a means of bringing the members flooding in!

Dragon, this is the best I can do, although Kev/Smartman might be able to come up with a better photo. Hawthorn Online Shop Take note of Crawford in the background, that shows you what the back of their guernsey will look like.

The story was in todays Herald Sun (Hence my post out of the blue) - But the story on the HUN site doesn't have attached pictures (As the actual paper did)

Ah mate, this one I will long defend. The Doggies are the local team out here ... Not something that would necceasrily be the case if they were still associated with that grotty suburb up the road.

Doesnt every club now have to have an alternate gurnsey?

No. This has been rumoured but some clubs such as Essendon & Richmond (& so both should) are holding out.

I believe both clubs need to have a members vote to change the guernsey.

If anyone is interested, the following site is good for looking back at past jumpers worn by all clubs...

http://www.footyjumpers.com/

When you click on a club, it will give you a subsequent menu with 'home & away jumper', 'pre-season jumper', etc, etc.

If you double-click on the 'home & away jumper' box for Hawthorn (by way of example) it will subsequently take you to another page detailing every form of the Hawthorn H & A jumper throughout the club's history.

Hasn't surged their membership numbers though, and old-timers still call the club Footscray.

Its market major folly that switching a targetted geographical name to a broad-based regional monicker will alter perceptions of the club.

It works a treat for Juventus, but only because they eschewed the use of geographically-targeted name in the very beginning.

We've discussed before mate, given the lack of success since the change and Essendon's success it's been difficult for them to attract the kids.

As Essendon start to struggle and the Doggies embark on what appears to be a successful period, this will change.

I absoloutely gaurentee you, they are very much the local team. One dude who works with me get real upitty if you call them Footscray, he supports them BECAUSE they are the called the Western Bulldogs. (We actually have a real strange situation in my office where my manager, our analyst and myself all have our desks pretty much together and we live in Altona, Altona Meadows & Altona respectively lol)

Give them a chance, the move will be a success mate.

I still call them Footscray though I must admit ;-) But that's mainly because Benjamin barracks for them, it's hard too change when you've spent half your life looking at Footscray on merchandise around the house lol

Yes, but its not all down to success per se, which is why the Bulldogs will never get close to a side like Essendon, regardless. Essendon, Collingwood & Carlton are all beneficiaries of what I call "a fortunate accident of history", wherein fate, geographical conveniences, and early success allowed them to get a jump on other clubs in the comp (particularly those who were late in coming to the comp) and the generational hand-down effect has enabled them to continually remain ahead of the pack.

They'll get a boost, but it will never be anything markedly significant. A period of success will always bring some sort of boost down the track, regardless of what the team is called.

The problem is that you can only be so reliant on regional support, with most regional support already allocated, and the high probability that a good deal of this support will also flow down generations, further boosting the likes of Essendon. The Bulldogs remain a minority in their own region, just as they're a minority force everywhere. None of the Hound tragics I know will countenance the term Western and still use the Footscray identifier.

Non region-specific identifiers only have an impact when a club adopts them from the get go and has some early success.
