We've discussed before mate, given the lack of success since the change and Essendon's success it's been difficult for them to attract the kids.
Yes, but its not all down to success per se, which is why the Bulldogs will never get close to a side like Essendon, regardless. Essendon, Collingwood & Carlton are all beneficiaries of what I call "a fortunate accident of history", wherein fate, geographical conveniences, and early success allowed them to get a jump on other clubs in the comp (particularly those who were late in coming to the comp) and the generational hand-down effect has enabled them to continually remain ahead of the pack.

As Essendon start to struggle and the Doggies embark on what appears to be a successful period, this will change.
They'll get a boost, but it will never be anything markedly significant. A period of success will always bring some sort of boost down the track, regardless of what the team is called.

I absoloutely gaurentee you, they are very much the local team. One dude who works with me get real upitty if you call them Footscray, he supports them BECAUSE they are the called the Western Bulldogs. (We actually have a real strange situation in my office where my manager, our analyst and myself all have our desks pretty much together and we live in Altona, Altona Meadows & Altona respectively lol)
The problem is that you can only be so reliant on regional support, with most regional support already allocated, and the high probability that a good deal of this support will also flow down generations, further boosting the likes of Essendon. The Bulldogs remain a minority in their own region, just as they're a minority force everywhere. None of the Hound tragics I know will countenance the term Western and still use the Footscray identifier.
Non region-specific identifiers only have an impact when a club adopts them from the get go and has some early success.
