New RLIF CEO - Top 3 'To Do's pre RLWC 2017

With the new RLIF CEO appointed i wonder if we can find some kind of consensus on what the Top 3 ' Should be done' actions pre RLWC 2017 would be.

So in the roughly two and half years from now what are your priorities for Mr Collier ?

For me:

  • International eligibility rules set in concrete
  • RLIF website / Facebook / social media brought up to a very high standard and maintained at that level.
  • Broadcasting rights for the RLWC / Marketing of the game TAKEN into new major markets in the Americas, Asia and Western Europe.

mine..

1. player eligibility - though coming from the ECB,who saw south africa as just another english county to pick players from,we may struggle to sort this out...hope im wrong though.

2. win the power struggle - the RFL & ARLC/NRL should answer to the RLIF....not the other way round!

3. RLIF REVENUE - the RLIF needs to massively increase its annual revenue to fund development...a world 9's and a larger "federation cup" to replace the 4 nations is the obvious way to go...we just need to figure out a 4 year cycle to fit them into...id go with this

year 1 - RLWC
year 2 - world 9s , tours & fed cup qualifing
year 3 - world 9s & FED CUP
year 4 - world 9s , tours & WCQ
year 5 - RLWC

that covers just about every aspect of our sport,9s,tours,multi nation qualifying and multi nation tournaments...

The biggest ones are:
- International calendar
- Revenue streams (encompassing broadast rights, sponsorship etc.)
- Player eligbility/nation in fighting

Here are my three

1. Revenue for RLIF
2. Revenue for RLIF
3. Revenue for RLIF

Its all about the money. Until that's sorted, the RLIF cant progress the game in any meaningful way

From my perspective the most important thing the CEO needs to do is develop a regular revenue stream for the RLIF.

Whether that is through additional tournaments run by the RLIF, charging a high fee for Test Matches involving England, New Zealand and Australia, securing some additional broadcast revenue or a combination of them doesn't worry me, however until such time as it can source a reasonable amount of revenue the RLIF will continue to be limited with what it can do.

I'd imagine the money for David Collier's position has come from the revenue the RLIF collected from the 2013 World Cup, which is fine, but it also means there is less for development now. As such it is important he makes back his cost to the RLIF plus some so maybe more can be spent on development or another RLIF employee can be hired.

Then maybe we can have more than volunteers looking after the RLIF's social media and web presence.

It has been stated the $ has come from WC profits.
Collier will not create a 5-10 team executive which will be tasked to generate the above.
It can't be underestimated how much of a coup this is for RL.

For those of you saying RLIF has no social media presence, their page is called 'International Rugby League' both on facebook and twitter and they do an excellent job keeping it up to date and have gained a big following on both.

he needs to work with the existing "executives" at the RLEF & APRLC

They aren't executives though.

You have a couple of development managers, and in Danny K's instance a General Manager.

The RLIF will employ a marketing executive, financial executive, legal executive etc. that will take the game forward.

I do hope that the current Development Managers/Regional Directors will become employed by the RLIF.

It would be ideal to have Danny K as European Director, Remond Safi as MEA Director, Romeo as Americas Director and an Asia-Pacific Director, all employed by the RLIF (not the RLEF!).

You then have a fully fledged governing body.

I thought so spud. But I was hoping to avoid confusion for those that are just starting to follow the RLIF/international game.

Any details on when they are looking to employ the 'new' executive positions you mentioned? Massive step in the right direction, especially if the development/regional managers fall under Collier's remit.

Was said in the presser it would be in the coming months.
Hopefully by mid year the RLIF headquarters is fully operational.
Said in presser would be 5-10 executives.

Usual stuff has already been mentioned but My top 3:

1. Sort out the Italian and Thailand issues of splinter groups especially Italy as they are building something considerable and would be an absolute tragedy if we lost them.

2. A concerted effort to push for junior growth in the fledgling nations and reward the nations if they reach a certain benchmark ie funded development officers. For strategic reasons I would love to see fulltime development officers in the US, Italy, South Africa & France, I feel these nations have a lot of potential with some help from the RLIF.

3. Sort out eligibility but introduce a sit-out period of 2 years if a player wants to swap nations. An area that leaves a bad taste in my mouth especially Eddie Pettyborne who has now represented 3 nations, it really erodes credibility of our International game.

is that counting Australian Schoolboys? I don't think he actually played for NZ just in a squad so if that is right it is 2 nations like so many others.

I have zero problem with "blood line" players and the more that they let play for minnows if not picked for the big 3 the better!

Yes played for 2 but represented 3. He was in the NZ squad, just didn't get a game.

I would like to see RLIF working with NRL to expand the rugby league market. If the NRL would only share a small fraction of the war chest some serious development could get underway.
RLIF needs more revenue streams banking on one big pay day every four years is disastrous anyone remember the falling out from rlwc 2000?
More incouragement for heritage players to represent nations fulltime. For example daniel vidot elects samoa as life long commitment there fore his club receives a salary cap exclusion for his contract not a massive one just enough for clubs to encourage international representation and he can only qualify if he plays 80-90% of somoas internationals for the year. (Obviously increase intermationals)
For players like eta Nabouli a larger cap exclusion because he is a born Fijian.
Offer clubs 2 born player cap exclusions
And 3-5 heritage.
So many possibilities so little hope. For a game that receives very little funding internationally I can really appreciate the international scene ATM. If only we could capitalise.

What if Vidot wants to play Origin? There's nothing in a SC exclusion for him unless you're suggesting he pockets the extra money?
