Everyone keeps harping on about the "original line up"

I dont understand why Smashing Pumpkins come under such criticism when bands like:
NIN
QOTSA
The Cure
Guns 'n' Roses (to a limited extent)
Foo Fighters
Marilyn Manson
and so on, pretty much have the original singer and a revolving door band and no one really brings up the issue.

Then you also have bands like INXS who claim to be the original thing with a different singer.

Does anyone really think that James and D'arcy contributed that much to the creative input of the band that the current lineup can never be as good?
As far as I can tell, Corgan is the Pumpkins (sure he co-wrote some of their best songs with Iha) and he is in control of whatever musical direction they took now and in the past.

From a sentimental veiwpoint - yes it wouldve been nice to have the original line up, but its not like it was them playing the songs on the albums!;-)

I only say it because James and D'arcy contributed a certain sound to the Pumpkins, it's not there anymore but I still like what I'm hearing from their new album.

With the afore mentioned bands, each case is different. QOSTA and Foo Fighters never really had what you would call an original line-up because they're always evolving. Guns N Roses and INXS aren't great examples because both bands suck ass these days. People only go and see the gunners to hear the old stuff.

Maybe the "regular" line-up would be a more appropriate term.

It is a very sentimental thing though.
