The Eastern Cape one of the few predominantly black populated area's that has Rugby as it's no.1 sport, together with the Southern Cape will enter the 2007 S14 season known as the "Southern Spears" their colours will be black, red and white.
At the end of the 2006 S14 seaosn, the lowest ranked SA side will be relegated to make way for the Spears in 07 who can't be relegated themselves in the first year.
The Eastern Cape has produced a large amount of black players playing in the Currie Cup and Super 12 including current Sringboks, Breyton Paulse, Bolla Conradie, Hayani Shimange and Solly Tyblilika.

Nice to see the fatcat's in SA trying to spread the game, I don't like the "Spears" chances however, the administration is poorly organised and both the Eastern and Southern Capes are near bankrupcy. On the field things don't look much better, the coach Peter De Villier's who coached the SA under 21's to World Cup Victory, has basically had to recruit a large number of players from the Under 21's side cause not many established player's are willing to relocate and the squad is made up of young, unexperienced and unknown players.
At least they still have 2 years to go and are looking to "buy back the farm" eg. buy back players originally from the area such as the one's mentioned above and they will also enter a side into the Currie Cup next year to prepare.
