There problem is being yet another offering in the most saturated RL market in the world.

Unlike say the Dolphins, they are offering very little to Sydney fans. Even to Norths fans they are only a shadow of what was.

Sure there will be a temporary sugar hit, but is it sustainable.
I think the Perth club will eventually be a success, it will just take longer to get a foothold in Perth now. After the NRL sell it and PVL is gone though

This is why I believe Vlandys is fecking up expansion. Perth, as a stand alone entity, is a no brainer. It’s a decade over time at least, and smothering it with a dead Sydney carcass makes no sense for mine.
you a business man now boomer? thinking you know better than vlandys. of course it doesn’t make sense to you, you haven’t caught up to today yet. old timers like you had your time and chances in this game and all you did was mess it up. bye bye, let these newer people like vlandys course correct it.

The nrl is in its most expansionary phase since 1994

Yet many so called “expansionists” just complain about everything

If people aren’t happy with how the nrl is today it’s just not the sport for them

Not downplaying NZ2. Hopefully there are team 18 or 20 without a Sydney club flavour. Huge step forward for the game
there are some good brands in sydney that if relocated over to NZ would be huge for that relocation. TV, fans in sydney, sponsorship.
The best expansion clubs in the country are relocations.

Would you say the game is in a stronger position today than in 1994?

I would say that the NRL/NSWRL is stronger today but that the international game is much weaker.

also union going professional has had an effect as well.

Its a good game, just needing significant rule upgrades to make it more based on big plays.

Vs 95 maybe even at best

Loss of clubs hurt the game a lot in Sydney

Return of bears will help
Balmain are still a mess

In Brisbane game is on par with crowds in 95

Those are our two key markets

Nz is way stronger and we had zero presence in Victoria. Storm have finally started to invest in juniors in vic (20 years too late but better late than never)

The 20 team arl comp never got a chance to see if it could work

Now we will find out

Will take 35 years for nrl to get back to 20 teams

Internationals ? I would say now. Rise of nz but more Tonga and Samoa

PNG will be there soon too

I’m old school
Bring back shoulder charges
Penalise diving
Eliminate bunker
Send of players more often for dissent
I’d even want to look at the return of five metres but it probably wouldn’t work cause the game is too fast now

Biggest issue is refs influence results way too much. Turned the game into rugby union

Maybe I’m getting old and jaded

I hate the standard of the comp and the style of play

I don’t mind watching Penrith choke the life out of other teams but there’s no variation in teams winning comps going back almost 15 years

The 2000 to 2010 was my favourite era (2014 wasn’t too bad either lol)

Very excited about expansion and the $$$ the game has now it’s been running on little money for decades

At one stage afl has close to double our revenue. They have generated billions more in revenue than we have over 20 years and you wonder where they have blown it.

Both codes net asset position is similar. And the arl is aiming for one billion in net assets down the track

The development of the int game is very exciting

Wb1234 writing "If people aren’t happy with how the nrl is today it’s just not the sport for them" which I find ironic given a couple of posts later proceeds to list half a dozen things he doesn't like or wants changed and then says the game has turned into union because of the referees.

Agree however that the game is in its most expansionary phase since 1994 as it had to grow otherwise it may be left behind. Is it expanding correctly, well not everyone agrees but it's not up to us. Only time will tell if it has been a success.

Each of the different eras has their positives and negatives obviously but I still side with the early-mid 90’s era simply because of the international scene and RU still being amateur.

im also of the belief that if the NRL bosses get things right we could be entering a golden age for the game and not just with the NRL but at international level as well.
