The Warriors are fortunate to have been on the right side of some close games early in the year. If they want to actually make a play in the finals, they need more depth in attack with a genuine play maker- Te Mari Martin.
This might be the one thing we agree on in this thread. :)

Did you actually read the article? This is the second sentence:

The game was genuinely in trouble back then. In all honesty, I think Covid benefitted the game in NZ, being stuck in Oz meant that there was a huge groundswell of interest in the Warriors when they finally returned home regardless of the results (this thread started before the Warriors started playing well). Check the crowds/viewership they were getting pre Covid and compare it with that first year back and it was like chalk and cheese. It is great that the ascendancy continued through last year even when the Warriors returned to their woeful worst.
Of course, but RL wasn't the only sport with participation declining.

the question is will the NRL take full advantage of this by giving NZ a 2nd NRL team?

Well the Warriors are telling everyone , including the NRL , that the country isn’t ready for a second team for another 10 years ….

Total self interest in my view … but some will probably believe it….

I’m waiting for the secret Orcas backer with all the money to come forward …. When’s that gunna happen ?

The sad think is that this forum is about the only place where anyone is talking about NZ2…..is anyone in NZ?

Really odd that Te Maire really seems unwanted at the club, offers more than CHT and his utility spot is keeping Healey out of the game day squad

I don’t think anyone said that the AB’s were irrelevant but instead said that the domestic NPC&super rugby competitions were struggling and fast losing appeal.
Super Rugby all but killed off NPC when it was introduced, however NPC went through a bit more of a mini resurgence once the Talent was better dispersed and the smaller non Super rugby based provinces.
Thing is 14 clubs can’t be financially viable in a country as small as NZ, most of those teams represent areas around 100k-300k populations.
League in NZ suffers from a top down problem where the interest in the Warriors is immense but below that is a chasm to the next level which at present makes that development step in Aus systems essential.
Getting the grass roots growing will help capture the locals imagination(it’s non existent in the majority of the countries school sports programs) but the Top level of the game in the Warriors often directly competes with the NZRLs interests and little if any money trickles into the local game, whereas union has the benefit of the All Blacks money essentially funding the entire systems down to grass roots- it’s very hard for the NZRL to compete with that at present.

They will just give them the bidders the brush like the last time they were over there for the Test
Even god had a rest on the 7th day after his creation

3 nrl teams announced in 3 years post Covid is a massive effort

Obviously his focus is now on the tv deal as certain sectors in the league community see it as his Achilles heel

It’s hard to see them coming in prior to the TV deal after this… the next 2 teams are gunna be hard yards building them from nothing …

We know what PVL and the other clubs are interested in

I think chch is the overwhelming favourite for team 20 and expect once the warriors play raiders ? At te kaha stadium next year talks will ramp up

Pvl and abdo will be there in a corporate box with the various nz2 bidders lurking around

Arl has also ensured nzrl gets home tests each year so they can profit from them

A second nz nrl team will spend at least 20 million on rugby league salaries / juniors etc in nz and will flow down to under 16

IF super rugby stays as is there should a push for more than 2 nz nrl sides

Obviously this is way down the track buts its in the realms of possibility

I never thought union would be vulnerable in nz. It’s always been presented as bulletproof
I've said it before, and I'll say it again.

Many do not realise what an impact Te Kaha/One NZ Stadium will make on the sporting landscape once it opens.

When PVL & Abdo go there and see a game live with a packed Cantab crowd cheering on the Warriors, they'll understand right away that 1) this venue needs a team & 2) more teams need THESE kinda venues.

Eliminating the bye to have an extra game each week to get more tv bucks ….

And the chch bid offered a license fee previously anyway so a red herring

The next tv deal will see clubs get even more over the cap so all the expansion clubs (including nz) will be on even stronger footing than now

They are negotiating the TV deal now and there are 19 teams and 9 games

Its pretty obvious after what happened in perth what they will need to have a successful bid

A guaranteed spend of around $5mill a year on Jnrs
Some financial guarantee of start up and covering costs ($20mill+)
A CofE funded ($20mill+)

Even with that Perth were forced into bed with an established heartland brand to help mitigate risk. So yes nice stadium but NRL will need to see a lot more than that for Christchurch to become a reality.

The other problem they have is NRL seems pretty keen on owning the start up then transferring ownership to members. That cant happen in NZ unless the Govt is footing the bill for the above.

Hopefully replicates the crusaders success in super rugby

Nz derby would be massive

Yeh and once that happens they won’t want to be stuck with a bye for very long

You don’t know sky nz could agree now to a second nz team as part of this tv deal

Time ran out bc of delays in the Perth bears
