Hmmm, Kantarovski ay, don't mind youse.
NEWCASTLE Jets coach Gary van Egmond hopes he can persuade stalled Socceroo Ljubo Milicevic to head for the Hunter as the Jets made a rare signing.
Having just captured young AIS striker Jason Naidovski on a two-year deal, the Jets supremo is now hungry to add some experience to his backline.
Milicevic fits the bill as van Egmond bids to fill the considerable hole created by Andrew Durantes departure to Wellington Phoenix.
The former Olyroo captain is a free agent having left the Victory by mutual consent with a year still to run on his contract.
Van Egmond told the Newcastle Herald: Something has gone wrong down in Melbourne for whatever reason.
I had a good chat with him and we are looking to bring him up to Newcastle so he can see what we are about.
It is a different football environment we have here. He has been dogged by injury with his knee but is feeling a lot better with it."
He added: "I think the important thing is to find out what Ljubo wants to do.
When you see a situation where the A-League-based Socceroos get together and his name is not there, you sit back and wonder.
Here is a player who has captained Berne, got to the quarter-finals of the Champions League and is only 27 years of age. He is a tremendous talent."
Only yesterday Jets captain Jade North told au.fourfourtwo.com that Milicevic would be a tremendous asset for the Jets. He said: "It would be fantastic, a great leader."
The Jets are also talking to Italian-based defender Adrian Madaschi, but appear to have missed out on Crystal Palace-bound Ruben Zadkovich.
As for Naidovski, he has scored eight goals for the AIS in the Victorian Premier League and will add to the clubs firepower options.
Only Joel Griffiths found the net regularly last season with scant scoring support from his teammates.
EXCLUSIVE: Ruben Zadkovich will put pen to paper on a Newcastle Jets contract when he returns to Australia according to an SMS message on Gary van Egmonds mobile phone.
Considerable confusion surrounds the Olyroos plans with conflicting reports over whether he was offered a deal with Championship club Crystal Palace.
First it looked like a Jets deal was done and then it looked dead in the water following the players training stint with the London club.
His agent says an offer from Palace was received and subsequently rejected but manager Neil Warnock is on record as saying talk of a contract offer was premature.
Supporters are not the only ones who have been left scratching their heads with van Egmond having sought clarification on the situation.
The Jets coach told au.fourfourtwo.com today: Obviously there have been reports and rumours flying around about Ruben and Crystal Palace.
We just sought to find out the situation and Ive had an SMS message from his agent saying that terms have been agreed (with the Jets) and that Ruben will sign when they both get back from overseas.
So thats the situation as we speak and well just have to see what happens. In my opinion the Championship is probably above the A-League and if a player gets an opportunity to play on that stage then good luck to him.
Reports in the Newcastle press today quote Zadkovichs agent Tom Brooks saying the players intention has always been to sign for the Jets and that he was merely training while visiting his brother on holiday.
Brooks states that Palace were so impressed with the versatile youngster that a deal was put to him.
However, Eagles manager Neil Warnock told the Croydon Advertiser newspaper: Ruben has been training with us but we are still having a look at him.
Zadkovich will pen a one-year contract at EnergyAustralia Stadium having found himself surplus to requirements under John Kosmina at Sydney FC. He will provide van Egmond with options at both full back and in a defensive midfield role.
The off season is upon us and there is no rest for the wicked. It certainly is a busy time for the Newcastle Jets as we seek to pursue commercial opportunities and settle on our playing list for Version 4.
Of prime importance is to provide a proper and thorough preparation for the team to embark on its defence. To this end we can disclose that the Jets are in negotiations with several overseas clubs to play some matches against the Hyundai A-League Champions.
Director of Football, Remo Nogarotto, is currently in Italy and holding preliminary discussions with Italian powerhouse Juventus F.C. There are some dates available at the end of May to coincide with Juventus Pre-Season trip to Asia. There are logistical issues that come to the fore, particularly in view of the European Championships and the availability of the top-tier players such as Del Piero, Trezeguet and Buffon, however it is something that we are keen on pursuing.
Similarly, the Jets are in discussions with Greek Champions Olympiakos, who fared so well in this years UEFA Champions League competition. Newcastle Jets CEO, John Tsatsimas, today said, Olympiakos are a quality side that feature regularly in the Champions League and have a host of quality players in their roster. They would certainly be a hit with the Australian public. However, there are also a couple of Asian clubs who have contacted us and are interested in coming to play us. In view of the fact that we will be participating in the Asian Champions League at the end of the next A-League season, we believe it would be prudent to examine those opportunities thoroughly, which also provides something to our supporters in the void that is the off season.
The Newcastle Jets resting on their laurels in the off season? Not in your life!
EXCLUSIVE: Joel Griffiths will return from his Japanese adventure as the Newcastle Jets marquee next season - but not at any price.
Coach Gary van Egmond has confirmed that last seasons Johnny Warren Medal winner is under consideration for the role but it is by no means a done deal.
One thing is certain though, the coach believes he has let a very good player go out on loan to Avispa f**kuoka and expects to get an even better player back.
Van Egmond told au.fourfourtwo.com: Joel as a marquee is one of the issues we are looking at."
There is an opportunity for a marquee (following the departure of last seasons flop Mario Jardel) with one or two spots still to fill in the attacking third.
I suppose its a question of looking at what we are getting for our dollars when we look at that (marquee) spot or even within the salary cap.
We are not the biggest club in the competition and you cant just be asking players to name their price. It doesnt work that way," he said.
But whether Griffiths proves to be the marquee player or not next season, van Egmond is confident he will have a striker on his hands that will be even hungrier to impress.
Griffiths is finding life in Japan to his liking and goals in his first couple of matches have already endeared him to the f**kuoka fans.
Van Egmond has revealed that he is planning to see for himself how Griffiths is faring and says it is no coincidence that he is plying his trade at this particular club.
It was a blank weekend for Griffiths this time as Avispa suffered a 5-1 thumping by FC Gifu but it doesnt change the fact he is in a terrific environment to learn, says the Jets coach.
He said: Ill be spending three or four days there to catch up with Joel. Its no coincidence that he joined that particular club and that Im happy he did so.
He is working with Ian Crook and I know Crooky is someone I know well having worked with him here at the Jets. Im looking forward to catching up with him as well.
Im sure Joel is happy that hes got off to a good start over there and hopefully he can continue to do well and then come back ready to continue that good form for us.
EXCLUSIVE: A Dutch-based Brazilian striker whos played in Holland for most of his senior career is on the radar of at least one A-League club ahead of season four.
Twenty-six-year-old Cristiano - full name Cristiano dos Santos Rodrigues currently at Willem II Tilburg, is a Rio-born forward whos played 20 times for the Eredivisie club over the last two seasons where he's scored six times.
This stint included a loan spell at Swiss club Basle, where he played twice in the UEFA Cup scoring twice. He also turned out five times in the Swiss Super League for the club.
Cristiano has a good record in Dutch football over the last seven seasons. After scoring nine times in 18 games for NAC Breda in 2001/02 he transferred to Roda JC where he played 61 games over the ensuring four seasons scoring 33 times. He moved to Willem in 2006.
This season Cristiano has largely been used off the bench at the club, which is currently third bottom of the Dutch top flight league.
1. You get two offers NP, one from Derby in the Championship and Newcastle in the A-League. Where do you go, nothing smart, just if those two contracts were up who would you choose.
He is treated like god in this great town. As if he'd leave FFS.2. If Joel performs like he did last season this season (assuming he even stays on for this season) then he'll be as good as gone NP, face it.
He is treated like god in this great town. As if he'd leave FFS.
I understand, but he said he was gonna sign with us and then turns his back on us.
no he didnt ffs.
he has been over in europe looking for a club for about a month. spent time at crystal palace and knocked them back after trialling and getting the derby offer.
He wouldn't fall to the might of a lucrative contract in the EPL or La Liga or Serie A (that's all the good leagues btw :sarcasm?
Have a look at a few posts above you, you'll see what I'm on aboutno he didnt ffs.
he has been over in europe looking for a club for about a month. spent time at crystal palace and knocked them back after trialling and getting the derby offer.
Yeah, cause if a person is ripping it up in the A-League they'd do well straight away in the Premiership. :sarcasm:
When did I ever say he'd do well? He'll happily welcome a contract that is triple what he's earning now to wam a bench. Money talks.
NEWCASTLE Jets owner Con Constantine has big plans for star striker Joel Griffiths which include a role at the club once his playing days are over.
Griffiths, who is in Japan on loan at Avispa f**kuoka, has a year to run on his contract at the Jets but is keen to settle his long-term future.
His adviser Luke Torossian met with Constantine and Jets chief executive John Tsatsimas this month to discuss a four-year extension.
The Herald reported yesterday Griffiths was disappointed with the Jets' initial offer of a two-year extension and had called on the club to show him some loyalty.
But Constantine said yesterday he would be more than happy to accommodate Griffiths's request, but he wanted to wait until the striker returned from Japan.
"It is no secret that I want Joel to stay in Newcastle," Constantine said. "He has been a very good player for the club and has done so much for the club.
"We want to take that forward.
"I want to build a [football] academy, and Joel could have a role in that once he has finished playing.
"That can only be done once I sit down with Joel face to face. Is he only interested in staying in Newcastle for the three or four years of his football career, or does he want to go further and be part of an academy?"
There is no doubt about Griffiths's value to the Jets, who yesterday lost out to Derby County in the battle for Olyroos utility Ruben Zadkovich.
Griffiths was the A-League and Jets player of the year and set a new goalscoring record in winning the competition's Golden Boot.
The Jets have hinted that Griffiths, who is on $170,000 a season, could replace flop Mario Jardel as the club's marquee player.
"Until I sit down with Joel it is very hard to say which way we are going to go," Constantine said.
"Joel has done the right thing by the club. The four of us myself, [coach] Gary [van Egmond], [director of football] Remo [Nogarotto] and Joel have to sit around the table, go through the motions, and work out what we are going to do next."
Constantine said the academy was part of a five-year plan.
"The academy is a major step forward," Constantine said.
"Three years ago I put a plan in place to win the grand final and we delivered. It gets harder as we go.
"The people who are around me and advising are telling me an academy is the way to go. We want to do something special. I want to see a situation where our academy will be so good that people from all over Australia will want to attend."
He has already met with the University of Newcastle and hopes to put in place learning programs to coincide with the academy.
"What happens when our players finish in the A-League, say, after three years?" Constantine said. "They don't know what to do next.
"I want to be in a position where we can say while you are in Newcastle there will be a program in place with the university where you can learn something. Then when you do finish football, they have something to look forward to."
He also said he was in negotiations with a couple of overseas clubs about playing a pre-season friendly against the Jets at EnergyAustralia Stadium.
Italian giants Juventus are expected to play a friendly against Melbourne Victory at the Telstra Dome on May 30 as part of an Asia-Pacific tour.
Greek side Olympiakos are also looking to play games in Australia.
"It is like football players until we sign the dotted line, nothing is 100 per cent," Constantine said.
Constantine = legend.
NEWCASTLE Jets coach Gary van Egmond flies to Europe today on a recruitment drive.
Top of his shopping list is a quality striker.
Joel Griffiths and teenager Jason Hoffman are the only genuine strikers on the Jets' books after the off-season departure of Mark Bridge, Troy Hearfield and Scott Tunbridge.
Based in Italy, van Egmond will spend two weeks in Europe and hopes to return with the signatures of at least three players a striker and two wide players.
"We were all over the shop because of the lateness of players getting to Newcastle last year," van Egmond said.
"I want to make sure we have the squad here as close to May 12 [and the start of pre-season training] as possible."
One player of particular interest to van Egmond is Brazilian striker Cristiano, who is playing for Willem II in the Dutch top division.
The 26-year-old front man is in his second year at Willem II and has also had stints at FC Basel (Switzerland) and Dutch clubs Roda JC, where he scored 33 goals in 110 games, and NAC Breda.
"The most important position is the number nine," van Egmond said.
"If we look here in Australia, there really is not anyone who is going to fit that bill.
"We need to ensure that happens from overseas.
"Cristiano is definitely one player we are looking at.
"He scored a number of goals when he was at Roda, has had a good career in Holland and is still at a good age.
"There is also a Nigerian boy in Switzerland we need to have a look at and another boy in Holland, who is playing in the second division."
Van Egmond will also cast his eye over former Australian youth defender Adrian Madaschi, who is at Serie C club Portosummaga.
The chances of Madaschi joining the Jets could hinge on whether the club signs former Melbourne defender Ljubo Milicevic.
Van Egmond has been in negotiations with the classy defender and expects to table an offer to him within a week.
The Jets are also close to finalising a deal with Adelaide utility and former Young Socceroos captain Shaun Ontong.
Van Egmond will also spend time at Italian giant AS Roma during his stay in Europe.
On the way home he will stop over in Japan and catch up with star striker Joel Griffiths, who is on loan to Avispa f**kuoka.

The Newcastle Jets has bolstered its midfield with the signing of feisty young Adelaide United tyro Shaun Ontong.
Ontong, who captained the Young Socceroos at the 2006 AFC Youth Championships and has 10 caps at international U20 level, will help plug the gaps left by Jets departees Mark Bridge, Andrew Durante, Stuart Musialik, Denni and Troy Hearfield.
Ontong's manager Ritchie Hinton from ESP in Melbourne confirmed the move, saying: While hes disappointed to leave Adelaide United hes looking forward to playing a second consecutive season of Asian Champions League football with the A-League Grand Final winners the Newcastle Jets."
The 21-year-old right-sided midfielder signed for Adelaide in June last year on a one year contract as one of Adelaide's three youth players. He made nine A-League appearances, including one start, before being sidelined with an ankle injury.
