Craig Gower is a wise old head. He reads the play clearly. He can create opportunities for the outside backs that other Newcastle halves and hookers cannot. He is unflappable. His field kicking game is excellent. He runs at the line, and he sets up his supports. Nobody can predict what options he will take. Without him as the X factor, Newcastle will not beat Melbourne.
Your sarcasm is misplaced. Gower is a handy goalkicker. I have seen him kick 9 goals from 9 attempts for London Broncos, some of them from wide out.
Of course he needs to practice after training if his goal kicking is to be good.

Here's an inside scoop. You look like a bloody goose ya pommy twat!
Billy Slater and Cooper Cronk both had off days on Saturday. Slater's dropped ball led to a Newcastle try. Plus Cameron Smith was slightly off in his goal kicking. Such a combination of let downs is unheard of in the history of Melbourne Storm. That freak set of events --- plus stellar performances by the Fijian imports Uate and Naiqama -- is what enabled Newcastle to scrape in by a goal (the number of tries scored were equal). Nobody could have anticipated that both Slater and Cronk would have an off day.
Had Slater and Cronk played to their ability Melbourne would have won comfortably.
Had Craig Gower been playing Newcastle could have won by 20 points.
