Next phone?

I need to update my phone as it's old and slow and well, its just time

I have the Samsung Galaxy S2 which I've been happy with so I was looking at Samsungs again

As my useage is fairly low I have decided on a $50 a month plan
As I'm with Optus that means I would get either the Galaxy S3 (with upgrades) or the Galaxy S4 mini with $0 up front on a $50 plan.

Someone has suggested I buy a Nexus 5 outright and then go on a $35 plan which gives me the same useage and the same cost over 2 years.

So which is the best option?

Or is there something else I should go for?

whats the s3 with upgrades? arent they up to s5, which would make the s3 fairly redundant? also depends on what size phone you'd like and what you use it for. if you read the screen a lot then my suggestion is get something with a bigger screen. i cant believe i was able to read anything on the nokia n95 all thsoe years ago

The upgraded operating system
Jelly bean, kit Kat etc plus larger mass storage. The S3 came with 16gb originally, but they updated to 32 & 64 versions. So an s3 can have the same operating system as the S4 with more internal storage but for less money because it looks older.

The s4 mini has less power and storage but is more of a size that suits me
I would only get it because of its compact size. No other reason

If I was happy to spend $60 a month I would just go with the S4 but I just don't use that much data or call time, so I would be spending more just for a slightly newer phone.

I'm in the same boat, went on a 2yr $39 plan with S2 at the end of 2012 (which got me $250 off the phone however much it was at the time), but lost that earlier this year and got myself a bottom-of-the-line cheapie as temporary replacement and just never got around to upgrading though!

As my current 2 year plan finishes next month, I'll be looking at doing a similar deal probably (I'm fine with redoing same plan and getting money off a new phone again, if 2degrees still does that).

My only problem with smart phones is the battery life, my current cheapie lasts for a few days, where I was lucky if I still had life on my S2 at the end of a workday after being on charge overnight.
Is this just the state of things with smart phones in general or are there any out there where the battery lasts for more than a day? Cos that would be a bit of a selling point for me (I'm old school when it comes to technology, I don't care if I don't have all the bells and whistles).

Yeah, the battery life is pretty much like that with smart phones.
My phone generally just sits in my bag when I'm at work, so its not a problem, but on occasions I do use it during the day and it drains the battery completely.

For that reason I have a charger at work and a charger at home. That way if I do use the phone during the day I'll charge it again. Its the only practicle solution. Unless you drive a lot and then you have a charger in your car that plugs into the hole where cigarette lighters used to go!

Yeah, I soon discovered that I had to bring my charger to work, and it became a bit of a science choosing the times to charge it up so it wouldn't go dead at inopportune moments!

I'll always miss my Sharp GX-25 (lasted from 2005-2008ish), the first phone I got that had a "big" colour screen and camera (would be small and terrible quality by today's standards), especially the awesome ringtone creator it had. Eventually died a natural death from to many drunken drops on the ground (not as durable as the Nokia 3310 which lasted me from 2002 to 2005), but that baby was sweet!

I would just go with two chargers, so you dont forget and leave one at work over the weekend. I just leave mine plugged in under my desk!

The Galaxy S2 has been the best phone I've had, but I do love a bit of technology. It has an amazing camera for a phone and it's a good size. Its just getting a bit slow when looking stuff up on the internets and it has limited size so I can't download any more apps and I dont have that many in the first place.

S3 is still all good
I personally have an S3 Mini, and I don't have a problem with it other than its starting to slow down in operation, but that could just be that I need to clear off the junk thats on it. Thinking of backing up what I want and resetting it.
Personally, I prefer a mini over a full sized phone as it fits in all my pockets okay, and while I don't like to do it, should I need to put something else in the pocket then theres room.
My only other gripe with my S3 mini is that its only running 4.1.2, its only a gripe because we have a product similar to Apple TV but requires Android to run 4.2 to be compatible, Dóh!

When I feel the need to upgrade, I'll probably get either another mini OR make the jump to Iphone as I use ipads for work so it seems a logical choice

have the s4 mini for work,, too small.

the s3 is the one theyve based their newer phones on. awesome machine. I have a Note 3 now but prefer the s3

How do you find the s3 with fitting it into pockets and stuff? Im looking at getting the note 4, but forget it if it wont even fit in a pocket.

Nexus 5 is a great device but a shit phone. Screen & performance is awesome. Problem is making normal phone calls. People always complaining they can't hear you. Has something to do with noise cancellation. Pain in the arse.

I'd buy a Nokia 930…and still might.

depends how big your pocket is. i have the note 3, its big but it fits in my work pocket and my shorts when i'm not at work. in my work shirt it will sit in the front pocket, but about 2-3cm sticks out the top

I've got an iphone which I have to charge a lot. But then again I use it like a mini computer all day. If you use your laptop or tablet it's battery doesn't last for days on end and they've got batteries many times as potent.
