We've seen Union peak and fall in our lifetimes and we are watching the beginning of the fall from its peak by the AFL too, just as the NRL finally fires up the rockets to make its inevitable run to the top of the Australian, New Zealand and wider Pacific sporting landscape.
f**k you are a delusional merkin

don't the AFL get like 80k to some normal games

dying. get your hand off it.

Just be happy the NRL is going from strength to strength.

Our game needs to pull its finger out in terms of crowds and membership to even consider ourselves to be No1.

I think everyone here an agree that our crowds, particularly in Sydney, are not what they should be.

Agreed on doing more to boost crowds, but you can't ignore total audience (crowd plus TV ratings) as both contribute significantly to revenue.

Out total audience is the biggest in Australian sport and then you add a reasonably good interest from some foreign countries.

At the end of the day, being the dominant TV sport in Australia and having a league that averages 20k attendance (this puts us in the top 20 domestic sporting leagues world wide I believe) has a very real claim to top spot. The missing piece is the dominant broadcast deal.

And as for membership. Anybody who still takes that seriously needs a mental health check. The figures are laughable given the lack of defined and consistent criteria.

When we overtake AFl in total revenue, crowds and membership then we will be the undisputed #1 sport in the country. As it stands we only surpass them on one key metric (and we haven't been able to monetise that advantage beyond them so far)

Only ticketed membership really matters and sadly we dont see those figures for either code. We saw with Tigers how fudged the membership numbers are.

I’d argue that once we have Perth and PNG we will have a distinct geographical advantage. Not a bad selling point.

I think if the tv deal can really hit 3B then we will have a more valuable tv deal than afl, and then we’ll really see the afl heads start to sweat and hang onto their crowd figures even more

Revenue agree, crowd not so much as we already have a bigger overall audience. NBA couldn't possibly have bigger crowds than NFL for example but could definitely aim to be the number 1 sport.

Memberships are just a mickey mouse stat that is also already accounted for in revenue and audience.

Leaving aside capacity of venue there is no greater measure of a clubs level of interest than people willing to pay, leave home and go and sit through a game. Thats a true measure of fan interest.
This is live sport not a tv soap opera after all.
