I meant overall. College teams having larger Stadiums and fill them but yes TV is bigger for NFL

And we know revenue in major sports derives mainly from TV money … apparently in 2023 ..93 of the top 100 rating tv shows were NFL games in the US … that is rare dominance for such a huge market ..up from 60 5 years earlier …. Their dominance is only going to increase and probably means bad news for the other sports …

If I watch Kayo on delay. I don't get counted officially in ratings. Yet Kayo knows I have watched and can use my viewing in the total watched minutes to sell to advertisers.

Disney's release of the figures showed ESPN+ is being watched in huge numbers and profits are showing that.

So the actual people sitting in front of the TV might be down but people seem to be watching. Hence why Disney/ESPN renewed.

That is the point behind that starting 5 on Netflix. They chose poorly with the players selected but the aim is to get to see the players off court

kayo can sell it to advertisers … the question for the relavance in this discussion is what is Kayo paying the NBA? Not much right ?

Yes but College players aren't paid and are in every state. So that is going no where either.

I presume Kayo pays ESPN to show it's content. Though on that. NBA League pass also hits at traditional TV's ratings.

That system is fast becoming irrelevant due to streaming

The TV ratings for the NFL continue to rise in the US … you are swallowing the NBA’s BS excuses to explain away their decline

Elite college football players are starting to be paid now..although I’m not sure of the relavance to this discussion…

Surely you aren’t suggesting College football is bigger ? A few teams get bigger crowds …mainly full of college kids paying $25 a ticket with not much else to do in Norman Oklahoma or Tuscaloosa Alabama …

Kayo would be paying very little to show the NBA ( or the NFL ) in Australia …I have also heard that the NFL gives away rights to 7mate for free to try and grow an Australian audience ..which they are succeeding with ..

You do get counted in the consolidation. Which is why the Live+7, Live+28 consolidation data used to be nice.

Dazn takeover will have huge benefits for super league

Sky cut the last deal around 50 percent and have lost interest

Dazn would be interested in super league as a flow on to the nrl rights

If the tv deal goes back to around 30 million pounds pa that should see most clubs go back to breakeven

Nrls global presence over afl will also be a factor down the track in which sport gets priority

Why the f**k are we talking about US sports TV deals?

Difficult culture, different scales of economy, different players.

The NRL’s current biggest media platform has just been bought by a Ukrainian utilising a lot of Saudi money apparently… we got much common culture there?

Global world we are living in … doesn’t hurt to see what’s happening elsewhere

NRL has definitely made moves internationally with Las vegas, PNG & rumours around nz2 & superleague.

I am not swallowing any excuses. The money the new NBA deal got shows there is more to it.

I am sure Disney would of looked at the whole picture before they signed up again

But it is different circumstances. NFL is primarly on a Sunday barring a couple of games a week.

Today for example there is 1 NFL game on.

As opposed to 10 NBA games with overlap. This makes it impossible to watch every game the old way to get the ratings up.

IF people are watching the NBA game on delay on the ESPN app as opposed to live. Does it matter to Disney?

Are you saying NFL fans don't follow their respective Colleges too?

I’m not going to keep arguing 5 new things with you every time you post …

I also think that the thread has been dragged sideways enough …. Enjoy your NBA … we’ll see how they go the next TV deal …that’s still a ways off and discussion in the meantime is moot

Just to clarify an incorrect comment:
College players are most definitely being paid

Just google NIL (name image likeness)

I am hearing some of the top colleges are paying their players (football) more than $20m per year - not individually but collectively.

The top QBs would be getting $2-3m at least with rumours of $8m or more

Fumblers are panicking about the dazn takeover

“For the AFL, this deal feels like a double-edged sword. Foxtel has been a lifeline for the league, funding everything from grassroots programs to blockbuster games. But DAZN’s focus on global markets raises a troubling question: Will they care enough about the AFL to protect its future? If they don’t, we could see smaller clubs struggling to survive and the grassroots programs that sustain our game left in the dust.”

Go global or perish

There was nothing to really argue in my post but ok.

FTR I like and follow both sports so it wasn't a dig at either. I just know from friends that live over there that mid week games are hard to watch live

This is a couple of years old but those who are paying would be the top ones that get $72m a year from TV.

The point is that it is that the sport as a whole is huge overall
