Up until now they also haven't produced content.

They now have a front row seat to the difficulties and costs that go with this.

That is the unknown here. Like if Foxtel was a licence to print money why did News Limited sell?

Time will tell how it plays out
Because they overpaid for the AFL and got out before the shit hits the fan. The AFL deal isn't sustainable without a sweetheart NRL deal.

That is very likely true, Once they have a date for HBO going the value drops further

I see it as they keep both or neither, If they want to continue to produce content. Then they need the big 3 they have already.

Should they want to go down the Path Amazon and now Netflix have shown as taking feeds from elsewhere.

Then adding F1, Supercars and so on that rates decent enough but looks a better fit and saving $600m along the way.

Atleast there is 3 years of the rights to go. Gives them time to acess

Nine took part equity in Dazn together with cash and loan repayment (ten percent equity is worth around 300 million pounds sterling so around 20 percent of the total consideration paid)

They would’ve taken all cash if they thought the company was falling off a cliff

But Dazn having to pay market value for the nrl would be bad given they paid huge overs for the afl and cricket

Hot sure why I keep seeing league posters continue to push the myth that Fox overpaid for the AFL...based on nothing....

But why would you stop now...its a myth thats been continually pushed since 2002.

Well shit for brains.

When the Panthers play at say 8pm on Friday. How do you watch the 6pm game live?

Maybe if you attended games you would see this problem.

Yes so me watching a 6pm Friday game at 11pm when I come home from another game has zero affect on reading information about the state of TV here.

As opposed to yourself that just tells bullshit non stop
You are talking about a bloke who one day told us he didn’t go to footy games then suddenly decided he’d seen 1000! Hes a massive bullshit artist. And when he gets caught out he doesn’t even refute it.

You’ll never persuade them otherwise. Some of these lads live in a very narrow world.

Correct. Even the FTA digital arms have the 6pm news on demand. They know that is what people need and want.

Competitive tension was a little bit different this time. We havent had paytv competition before. Paramount boosted went high, even Nine went for it, Fox and Seven had to beat that.
You can look at it two ways. Either the afl were just plain lucky or alternatively they played it very well. I think it’s the latter myself. We went early and didn’t get the deal we deserved. I’m sure the lesson has been learned but gee the markets changing quickly.

I am in the camp of the current deal not being that bad. Expansion wouldn't of happened without the deal being done

Yeah I don’t think it was bad. I just think we could have done a bit better. I’m really impressed with the way Vlandys is managing the finances, participation and sponsorship. We’ve got an embarrassment of expansion options and are staring down the opportunity of being the biggest game across the South Pacific. I still reckon expansion has been unnecessarily messy. The next broadcast deal needs to be the best it can for the game to reach its potential here. Then there is the Northern Hemisphere………….

What did Nine sell to Dazn?

Was there an all cash option?

Yes and because of that they paid a lot, perhaps too much. If Stan get the NRL or fox have to pay more for it is their sports portfolio still profitable? I just find it interesting that after all the shit news did to secure the pay market they just decide to sell off and pull out immediately after signing the AFL deal.
