I’m not sure this has been posted earlier. It this is Dazn’s announcement re Foxtel. It’s a bit corporate BS but also interesting

Thank you for posting this article, it offers some really significant insights into the thinking of DAZN. First thing I can't help noticing is the image heading the article. I'm not 100% shore but I think I can count 4 NRL/W images there and not 1 AFL. They mention in the article that a main reason for the purchase was to export Australian sports globally and add extra content. Judging by the image the NRL is front and centre in their mind. I googled the markets where DAZN are active. Obviously there's Canada and the USA, but France and Japan could be very interesting. Also Brazil with its big population and early signs of interest in the game. I think it's exciting times to be an NRL fan.

I thought somebody might pick this up. NRL front and centre and a clear purpose of marketing Australian sport overseas is a positive start. Now show us the money!

“We are also committed to using our global reach to export Australia’s most popular sports to new markets around the world, and we will continue to promote women’s and under-represented sports.

“We’re looking forward to working closely with Patrick Delany and his team, as well as News Corp and Telstra as shareholders in DAZN, to realise our ambitious vision for the future of sport entertainment.”

Wow

It’s only natural they increase their commitment to rugby league by getting the super league rights too

Rugby league is now in an enviable position with both Stan and Foxsports going hard for the nrl rights

Pvl has picked his timing amazingly going it market with three more teams and more overall content

Wow indeed Wb1234, i get that you want to put a positive spin on everything involving the game and PVL but the first 2 paragraphs are PR spiel. Of course Dazn are going to talk up a business they have just paid $3.4bn for and will work closely with the CEO and former owners who they have just handed over a wad of cash to and have taken up a shareholding. They are not going to bag them. What Dazn has said is nothing ground breaking. Wouldn't be surprised if News Corp and Telstra have said that Dazn will be a great custodian of Foxtel and the business has great growth potential within the Dazn stable of businesses and they can showcase Australian sport to the world.

As for PVL's amazing timing, do you think he would have got any significant uplift to the next TV rights if the ARL did not offer more teams (ie more content) when the rights came up again?

I know you will take the above as being negative but hopefully the game does get more TV money which can be invested back into the game. As Vlad59 said "now show us the money".

This is seems to be softening the NRL up for a reduced deal with the contra being "we will sell the game overseas".

I say f**k that, get the cash!

No where in that PR piece did they mention the non sport side of Foxtel. Streaming alone won't bring in the money

But key is competition

He literally added more teams because it would Improve the value of the tv deal

And my comment on Pvl great timing is for the mongs on here who predicted that the environment for new tv deals was a hostile one

Dazn v Stan is going to be as exciting as origin

Even a crappy sport like Union in Australia is looking at more money and nobody watches it

Pvl really has got the game humming again

Your comment about PVL's amazing timing, well the timing is a no brainer and not some genius. No new yeams/content would have likely meant minimal if any uplift to the TV deal. It's not as if PVL could have said we have the same number of games but pay us more, especially in the current economic environment.

Hopefully Dazn vs Stan and any other company creates sufficient tension to get more money.

PVL and the administration have greatly improved the financial footing of the game and must be congratulated. Where I would like them to also concentrate on is fixing up the refereeing standard and judiciary lucky dip which will provide a further boost the game.

His love of PVL is akin to a one man wank fest.

I have a grind with people who complain about refereeing.

What era was it better?

If you through the decades there is multiple accusations that referees were crooked, betting game they were involved in and for teams they have affinity with.

Although, when you back through the replays and look at these controversial calls. When you back and look at the tape, I feel they got it right.

Referees today are at very least as good as they ever have been. Just under more scrutiny then ever before. It’s so easy to just blame the referees.

No respect for refs these days

Plus nobody knows what an obstruction is

The refereeing is a mess

And you didn’t like it when I said it before but there’s too many crap nrl clubs and the style of game can be boring

And they need to bring in proper incentives for clubs to develop juniors

And the nrl would’ve got an uplift anyway but the pacific cup, expanded nrlw, womens and under 19 origin plus dolphins, png, Perth bears and ???? Nz/ Brisbane is a lot of value for tv (plus Las Vegas season opener)

I wouldn’t read too much into it, It’s a foxsports stock image, Foxtel used the same image on their press release announcing the deal.
