The article says they are losing money on the premier deal

And they are paying 100 million pa for it

Soccer is a minor sport here you should know this
no they aren't, they paid $80mill a year for it.
yes it is at Aleague level.
At EPL, and international level it is big enough to generate 1 million paying subscribers to a streaming service.

75 million revenue from all subscribers v 100 million for one contract

lol bargain

Its somewhere between $84mill and $300mill (Optus sport subscriptions range between $7 and $25 a month) on an $80 mill contact for EPL and around $10 mill for other soccer tournaments and leagues, with zero production costs.

And if they are on the lowest subscription Optus are raking it elsewhere from mobile contract of that subscriber.

One million subs paying 75 million pa is under 7 dollars a month

Nrl might as well give out free kayo jn Campbelltown it wil make similar revenue

Media reports already posted have it at $75m for their subscription tv revenue in 2023-24.

Singtels annual report puts their entire paytv revenue at S$199m (AU$234m) - and they are one of two paytv providers in Singapore.

I’ll go off on a tangent. If you are trying to sell rugby league to these competitors you have an entry point through the word ‘rugby’. The sport is known world wide but not really understood. So the tired boring version of rugby known as union gives us an entry point. If you are trying to sell AFL what is your entry point?

Nrl or bust baby

If premier league soccer meant anything Optus wouldn’t be selling the business it’s a lemon

The future of which platform wins the streaming / pay tv battle in Australia will be determined by who gets the nrl rights
I mean, Foxtel just literally sold the rights to the NRL off.

You just keep punching yourself in the balls

We are certainly very suddenly seeing the rationalisation of the streaming industry, the competition to see who will survive may well work in the NRL`s favour.
Streaming platforms have indeed revolutionized how content is consumed, but they face significant hurdles in turning a profit due to high production costs, licensing fees, and intense competition.

The "rationalisation" of the streaming industry likely refers to the consolidation and restructuring happening as platforms struggle to achieve sustainable profitability. This could involve mergers, acquisitions, or even some services shutting down. For sports leagues like the NRL, this could create opportunities to negotiate better deals or partner with surviving platforms, as streaming services may compete more aggressively for live sports content, which remains a key driver of subscriptions.

If streaming platforms are under pressure, the NRL might find itself in a stronger position to leverage its broadcasting rights, especially if demand for live sports remains high. However, the league would also need to balance traditional broadcast deals with streaming partnerships to maximize revenue and reach.

HA HA ha.. as with all 'hals', 'injections' ( Dave i can't open the pod Bay doors) their is 'vibe' to it or rational ghost seance........

Might help if NRL media would stop using the word "Rugby" to specifically refer to the game of Rugby Union.

The NRL need big time to have a pre season tournament, we had the Nines before and was very successful and it went down well for the PayTV audience. This is where if we (NRL) have a nine tournament, possibly with 2 competitions point for the winner. We also need a more viable after season international program of appox for 4/5 weeks- this plays well for the upgrade of $ for the PAY/TV market, as it keeps subscriber on for up to 2 months extra, which is $$$ for the PayTV market. Get these issues settled ( spend money/ ie travel accommodation/ stadium bookings etc) and again this program demands a upgraded ($'s) contract.

What would you say is not "viable" about the recent post season international tournament?

Yes it looks like it is long BUT
30 man NRL squad times * 17 teams equals 510 players in the NRL
Lets say the international's selected players numbers would be say 44 players chosen from the NRL player list to play 4 games with a final (5)
That means 466 NRL players don't participate in the end of year internationals. In fact it very close to what we had this year, just figured different and slightly expanded. I would always look forward to Australia England final.
So the part at he end of year almost same/same, but with the big teams playing each other.
The Nines tournament before the season opener could be like the Auckland Nines, which i found a great championship.
So we have a bunch of teams from Australia and England in Las Vegas playing in Ellegiant stadium. A round robin (Nines) games say a week b4 the 'the opener. " I even nominate a ground
We have to coordinate with the Super league if we are to expand, which also means having fans in countries that DON"T have Rugby league teams, but for this to happen it ha to a bid of razzle dazzle show business, international arena's etc.
The nines should be played over a 2/4 night program so each team only plays one game per day. Details can be worked out.
So what we have now is a huge pre season entertainment package ( and if were a player- I would be excited to play a sightly different format- and for the winner of each of these sub Nines comp gets 2 competition points.
Instead we have trials where some person we never heard of before playing half back, teams chopped and change- thier not even intersted in winning. I don't watch for that reason, it's a kinda fake game.

So the majority of NRL players wont have their season extended, something like 450+ players and some stopped earlier as their team didn't make the finals, so it's not huge season. Yes they will say the top players will have a long season, BUT they play internationals now (like last year) I am trying to make it a more entertaining spectacular.
You know something you might pay $30 for a month, as it is I will joint KAyo when the Australia season starts, because it all kinda letdown till then.
Better link to Cashman field las Vegas. just the setting with team tents/gazebos in the outfield.
