Subscription services will use ratings as a proxy to gauge which programs are driving subscription uptake, engagement and churn.
He knows full well subscribers and ratings are strongly correlated

I’m trying to get him to explain how afl gets forty percent less ratings and has a similar amount of subscribers

He even provided the average ratings himself and showed nrl games get close to 200k more people watching on average

How many programs from binge make the top 100 programs on Foxtel ?

Nrl 72 percent ?

Binge ?
Afl?
lol are you really this stupid, Binge has hundred of movies and shows catering to a wide cross range of subscribers. Of course one thing that appeals specifically to one cohort is going to rate higher. A fairer comparison if determining motivation to pay for a subscription would be how many people watch movies on binge (all movies).
No-one subscribes to a streaming service for one show unless its a once in a lifetime show like GoT which avg'd far higher than any NRL game has achieved on Foxtel.

I can see Kayo having a sizeable drop off (50-60%) if they lose NRL but Binge and Foxtel will soldier on with the 75% of all subscribers they have I'm sure. Id keep it as I watch SL,NFL and F1 on it. If they lost SL as well as NRL Id get F1 elsewhere and drop off. we all have our own individual motivations for paying for tv.

They’ll use a variety of metrics to determine this.

What do subscribers first watch, # unique streams per program , # minutes watched per program, % conversion rate of different marketing promos to sign ups, promo code attribution, paid social/sem marketing attribution, surveys, marketing email engagements etc

subscription companies are tech companies and have much more data centric means to understand their audience behaviour and therefore where to spend their money

they don’t just look at a graph called ‘subscribers’ and hope and pray.

Binge programs aren’t amongst the most watched on Foxtel

Take away the nrl and that halo effect dies off and they lose a big chunk of those subs too

Stan getting the nrl would be all your nightmares coming true

Pvl will know exactly how many subs league has vs afl

Since league has more subs then the starting point for the next pay tv deal is 430 million but likely much more

This is where Stan could cripple Foxtel and they don’t have to worry about overpaying for the afl rights they can put all their resources into nrl

Subscription services will use ratings as a proxy to gauge which programs are driving subscription uptake, retention/engagement and churn.

the more ratings something has, the higher engagement of their service from that program, the less chance of churning (unsubscribing).

if you think ratings / streams etc is irrelevant for subscription providers you’re dreaming

Never said that either, I said they are of lesser importance than the main revenue driver: subscriptions. And the data shows that as many people subscribe for non sport content and sport.

Further ratings might NRL favoritism, but minutes watched favours the AFL. Foxtel so far this year going with minutes watched as its primary reported stat.

Pick your metric and it'll tell whatever story you want.

This is a great post.

Im with you on this, Ive maintained that theres more to it than the data we see. for a while now.

Losing less than 25% of subscribers due to no more NRL wont cripple Foxtel lol

Seeing Stan getting the nrl and Foxtel being stuck with the afl would be awesome

It would demonstrate which sport is essential and which isn’t

And there’s a decent chance it happens too with Foxtel paying overs for the afl
Sure, giving a scum org like news ltd a bloody nose is always fun to watch. Having to watch all games on a Ch9 company? Not so fun.

But if you think Foxtel will be crippled when it will still have 3.5-4mill subscribers youre even more stupid than most on here think.

It won’t

If they lose nrl they will lose millions of subs

If they retain 1.5 million subs after nrl goes ill be surprised

Stan would become the dominant pay tv company and build the network with other offerings

lol. Theres probably a million or so subscribers watching NRL on Fox. There's a % of them that watch other things on fox, kayo and binge that wouldn't drop it if they lost NRL.
Net loss for Fox is probably in the 700-900k range at tops out of a subscriber base of 4.6million.

It’s called the halo effect

You should know about this

They lose their best programming they lose the halo

Me too, I pay the 40 so my League mad medical student son can share it with me from his dorm at hospital he`s training at.
Can be frustrating though, I smashed a remote on the weekend when Kayo kept playing up and I missed the first 20 minutes of one game and 10 of a couple of others, I don`t fork out 40 every month in good faith and then have to have the tranny on like I did for 40 years before I got Kayo.
Kayo never plays up for me but how did you miss 20 minutes of multiple games on a watch on-demand service?

Never, lucky you. How do I miss twenty minutes? Tell me about it, it is so bloody infuriating. Once it gets going it`s ok, but man can it give me grief. What I don`t understand is although we`re on a property we are only 5 minutes out of town (you can see the bloody town from our verandah) and we`re talking Taree so it`s no one horse town, so you`d think the service would be good.

But once it started working, you could just start from the kick off?
