Say you have a million that subscribe just for rugby league

You would get another million that do it somewhat for rugby league

That’s what Fox would be looking at losing

Let’s be honest how many people in nsw and qld would subscribe to Foxtel for afl ?

Be lucky to be 5k in total
The risk would be in how many of the 'somewhat for rugby league' they would lose. Losing less than 25% of subscribers who ' subscribe just for rugby league' wouldnt cripple foxtel.
All a bit pointless anyway, I cant see them losing the rights. It would take a mega offer from elsewhere for NRl to ditch its long term partner. AFL turned down bigger offers to stay with the tried and tested (allegedly)

Stan’s the wildcard

If they want to be a major player in pay tv / streaming in Australia then getting the nrl is it

And realistically it will be better value than the afl unless they are forced to pay 550 million pa

It would be good for rugby league to be off Foxtel for a while

Make them appreciate what they have lost

They allegedly offered $500mill for AFL, with presumably $15-25mill or so contra in that. Is $475mill cash enough for NRL to ditch Fox? Could Stan afford more than they offered for AFL?

They just paid union 30 percent more with one less super rugby team and performance bonuses for more money if Aussie teams wins

And that’s for a sport which nobody watches

Didi it include additional things like RUWC, Lions tour or other events which the previous deal didnt have?
Find it hard to believe they just kindly offered 30% more for a sport not rating very well. especially as they refused to offer 1cent more in the last deal for NRl. Knowing Ch9 most of it is contra!

Nope

Wc is separate

The market for sports rights is heating up with Dazn coming in (they didn’t want to lose union to Dazn/fox)

Sure that doesn’t help nrl get more for its pay tv rights directly

But all the commentary from stan is they want the nrl pay tv rights

And the person doing the bidding for channel Nine will be Amanda Laing

Her previous job ?

Commissioner on the arlc

Just looked and it does include the Lions tour which previous deal didnt have. Also somthing about Wallaby win bonuses but not clear if that is on top of the $ value stated, no cash and contra split mentioned either. devils always in the detail!

The talks were going nowhere by December which was when Stan’s exclusive period ran out

Then Dazn bought Fox and they concluded a deal asap

Dazn are rumoured to be sniffing around the nz super rugby rights too after sky nz offered less

Of the big regular team sports DAZN doesnt have a lot in UK which you'd think would be a major market opportunity for them. They seem to have focused on combat sports and second tier football comps. Getting both hemispheres Union and League comps would be a plus for their UK and Aus/NZ operations youd think. Union might have gone off a bit early on the Stan deal?

I’m sure if Dazn keep the nrl rights then it’s going to positively impact super league esp if Pvl does actually invest in it

Don’t think nzru will leave skynz

Part of the last tv deal the nzru were given five percent of the shares in the company lol

Hey I got the pro afl accounts to admit 1.1 million subs would leave Foxtel if they lose the nrl

That’s worth 450 million right there

And the real number is 2 million

You spent 20 years saying the nrl needed to copy the afl national footprint to get big tv dollars and we now see what bs that is

So given they have 4.7m total subscribers across their platforms, 1.7m of which are Binge/Foxtel Now and therefore have no sport, your claim is that 2 out of every 3 subscribers is only there for NRL?

If you are still unsure about where those numbers come from, you can read page 45.

Could the NRL use this in thier favour in negotations ?

9 gave union a 30% rise, based on numbers 9 should give the NRL closer to 40%

There’s loads of arguments they could use

Problem is nobody else will be bidding for the fta rights (seven may bid for origin)

The best argument is that at 130 million nine would be paying as little as 80 million for the nrl (origin and rep games being worth 50 million) which is almost half what afl get

Fta is only 22 percent of the total

The big dollars come from fox and a top up from sky

It’s even worse union ratings haven’t grown whilst nine have gotten extra games like women’s origin for free
