DAZN has rejected a proposal from the French Professional Football League (LFP) to terminate its five-year domestic rights deal for Ligue 1 after just one season.

The sports streaming service had initially agreed a five-year contract worth €400 million (US$453.8 million) per year to show eight of the nine Ligue 1 games held each week.

However, it has been keen to renegotiate its deal due to low subscriber numbers. It is believed to have just 500,000 signups for its service, which is significantly short of the 1.5 million it needs to break even on its investment.

In February, DAZN withheld half of its €70 million (US$79.4 million) payment, alleging that the LFP had not done enough to combat piracy. It also blamed the league and clubs for failing to promote its coverage and for not cooperating on content. The LFP proceeded to take DAZN to court for its owed money, which DAZN eventually paid at the end of the month.

Both sides then entered a mediation process in March in an attempt to find a compromise. According to multiple reports, the mediator offered a solution that would see DAZN pay the league €140 million (US$158.8 million), the full amount it owes for this season, and an additional fee of up to €125 million (US$141.8 million) in compensation for the following campaign. The deal with DAZN would then be terminated at the end of the current season.

At a meeting held this week, Ligue 1 clubs voted in favour of the proposal. However, DAZN has now rejected the offered solution, opening the door for formal legal action to take place.

Hmmmm
Geeez only 500k subs in a country of 70m for France’s number 1 sport.

Its a gamble for streamers having to guess how much to pay and charge for sports not knowing how many ppl will sign up.

Agreed, but I share your previous concern. If they can just stop paying at a whim, and hope to negotiate a better deal.

Seems a bit Setanta Sports to me.

What do we think they will value international TV rights at? My concern is very little.

I get the feeling the next afl pay tv deal could well be a cut on the current one

The new owner has no emotional attachment to afl like Murdoch who was from Adelaide and who harboured resentment against rugby league for not winning the super league war

It will come down to subscribers and ratings. They said Nathan Buckley was trying to explain the rules of the game to him when he attended recently im sure like most people not from afl states he would’ve been baffled by the game and its weird rules

Whether the Dazn executives understand AFL will have next to no bearing on how much they bid for the rights. Dazn shows NFL globally and its rules and plays are pretty weird to non-Americans.

As you said, it will come down to subscribers and ratings. Whether there is any competitive tension and what they can afford and if they can make money from it will also be high up on the list as well. Whether the Russian owner or the Middle East backers understand AFL will not impact how much they pay for it. Isn't the Foxtel boss and other local execetives staying on? So why does the owner need to know the rules? I am sure the Dazn owner and his middle east backers don't have framed rugby league jerseys hanging in their mansions.

Wasn't Kerry Packer a rugby league supporter? He didn't open his wallet to pay overs for the rugby league rights.

These are business people who look at the bottom line, not emotional fans with a hatred of another code making claims that audited accounts are doctored or fraudulent after a quick glance.

Unfortunately for us, we have no deal yet, and they don't have to worry about one until the 2030s.

You also seem to think that FTA ratings(and only those quoted by your bestie on Twitter) are the sole criteria for a Pay TV deal.

Anyone got the podcast where Eddie McGuire was talking about how seven are concerned at the loss of a large number of viewers to Foxtel ?

I’ve been reading that the next AFL deal was going to collapse and the NRL become sky high for the last 20+ years.

As PR said their next deal is half more than half a decade away, trying to predict what will happen in that deal based on the ratings on FTA for a portion of one season is laughable.

Nobody has been saying the afl tv deal is going to go down at any time in the last 20 years

That’s just bs

Many on this forum said afl has a national competition and that’s why it gets massive tv deals

And that the nrl had to add Perth and Adelaide to get similar deals

Which was total bs

Now without Murdoch to play favourites afl has to stack up in terms of ratings and subscribers

On both measures it’s a long way second to league

And on fta where game length matters the ratings have taken a huge hit

But maybe the Tasmanian afl team will save their next deal

Pretty sure before the 2025 afl deal announcement you were commentating on how you thought they had maxed out their value lol.

Nah

Find a quote

I did say that the real deal was around 550 million and that the afl included Telstra contra because the result wasn’t great and they wanted to put a positive spin on it

Foxtel are going to want a whole lot more exclusive content next time which will mean lower overall ratings as less fta access and more games in poor crowd time slots (less overlapping games)

We are going for fraud not negligence. It carries a higher penalty. We are not here to muck around with them just getting a fine and a slap on the wrist for being negligent. We want the whole sham of a sport shut down due to commiting financial fraud.
