Ok …that’s Intersting …. Who would show the games on FTA if they lost these rights ?
FTA would still show it, they just won’t pay as much for it, so I guess the hope is that they will be forced to bid against streamers to get both, inflating the fta component of the rights. There is still a market for them though, 9 get around 100k on 9Now give or take for nrl games and 5 or 6 times that for origin, the rest is terrestrial. But it’s only going to keep growing double digit year on year. It makes the timing of the nrl rights negotiations pretty perfect, it’s before the antisiphoning is due to be re-examined by parliament & still early enough that terrestrial are still dominant.

Thanks to the anti-siphoning amendments nine will be forced to bid against digital streamers for the digital rights as only the terrestrial rights are protected, which given the unstoppable shift to BVOD will be worth far less. So they could in theory win the terrestrial rights and lose the digital rights for origin for example. So they are going to have to step up regardless of there being a genuine rival fta bid. It makes a 9/Stan bid for the lot more likely.

Ignore the fumbles, this is what channel 9 want to see every night. 4 out of the top 6 and the NRL capping off a big evening.

Fox screwed Vlandys? Vlandys himself said he did the deal to protect the broadcasters.
True, he definitely has fault in this. But how did our esteemed partners respond to the gesture when they were on their feet again? By handing bucket loads of money to our rivals. Fair enough, business is business, but Fox needs the NRL and Vlandys seems like the kind of guy to hold a grudge.

Hope Fox/Dazn miss out on the NRL this time round and they and the AFL suffer badly for it.

A thought on strategy in the media battle in WA:

1 game a week to Channel 7, 4pm EST Saturdays, 2pm WST. 2/3rds of Bears home games in that slot. All Bears games against Broncos, Storm and Sea Eagles in that slot regardless of venue.

Channel 9 unchanged, 3 games a week - Thursday, Friday, Sunday.

Fox simulcast all games.

That's a good point. I'm pretty sure there's no AFL on FTA on Saturdays now. The Bears FTA o on a Saturday would be huge for Perth

Interesting that PVL and Abdo had dinner with Stokes on Wednesday night ….

Sharpening his bid for origin and also the rugby league World Cup

“The NRL is also privately confident Seven West Media will be at the table when they kick off broadcast rights negotiations for 2028 and beyond in the coming months.”

Wonder if they throw in a lowball for the lot ?

Nrl should also think strategically

A lesser bid from Stan (say 20 million pa less) will be a disaster for Dazn and could lead to them renegotiating the afl deal down wards when they see over 50 percent of their subs cancelling

Certainly will be interesting to see if NRL go with Nine/Stan. Accepting a slightly lesser offer to move away from Fox/DAZN and AFL would be a brave move. It may change future tv rights deals in the future. Fox had such a monopoly for a long time.

It doesn’t work like that, the afl could take them to court or at worst be free to take the rights to market again. The difference with what is going on in the French soccer deal is that they had contractual agreements to reach certain subscription targets, which they haven’t done.

Where are they going to go if Fox does what it did to French soccer

Nine will already have got the nrl

Fox losing the nrl tv rights could be the biggest event to happen to pay tv in Australia since the super league war

They have never paid nrl what it’s worth over 30 years

Losing it would force them to come back next time and pay overs

I just want to see if Foxsports is a viable product only with the afl on a deal they paid 450 million for

More than the NRL can bear
Those pushing the story that Channel Seven will take over as the NRL free-to-air broadcaster have gone awfully quiet this week.

The reaction from The West Australian newspaper (below) was brutal in response to the announcement the Perth Bears will be the NRL’s 18th team when they start in 2027. Seven West Media owns The West Australian and Channel Seven.

Front-page stories highly critical of the NRL’s shiny new toy have been embarrassing for those who have tried to spruik the idea that somehow the AFL-aligned Seven Network would be a good home for the NRL.

Apart from having spent all their money on AFL rights, there is no way the Seven Network has the room on its main channel for the NRL.

I understand the NRL is trying to do its best to create competition for the free-to-air rights, but the facts are it is just not there. The NRL TV rights are currently held by Nine Entertainment, owners of this masthead.

To suggest that the Seven Network will buy State of Origin is also ridiculous, because there is no way Nine would want the NRL rights without its most significant add-ons: Origin and the finals series.

The acres of print you will see in the News Corp press bagging the Nine Network and trying to create a false market is just mischievous and uninformed. The NRL knows that when it comes to free-to-air TV, at least, it has to do a deal with Nine.

Where it gets interesting is whether DAZN, the new owners of Foxtel, is willing to pay the big dollars the game desperately needs. Nine is in a position of strength, and in a position where it could buy the lot, given it has free-to-air channels plus a potential subscription arm with Stan Sport. No other media company can do that at the moment.

It was interesting to hear some of those pushing the likes of Amazon and Netflix as potential bidders for the NRL rights also expressing dismay that cricket’s World Test Championship final can be seen only on Amazon. The contradiction in that argument is hard to fathom.

What is interesting is the NRL’s desire to get a deal done with the networks as soon as possible. With two years left in the current deal, the reason for the rush can only be to try and get a renegotiated final year of the broadcast rights with the Perth team coming in.
