wheres the link for it? Google search doesn't bring up specific Pay Tv subscription number that I can see.

Total 2.5 million in pacific

“shows that those Pacific assets – primarily Digicel’s 2.1 million customers in Papua New Guinea – are remarkably profitable and a potentially lucrative asset.

In PNG, Digicel mobile has a remarkable 91% market share. Its extensive network entrenches that dominance. It has 945 mobile cell sites which provide network coverage of at least 2G standard to an estimated 85% of the PNG population. The network beams across an estimated 53% of PNG’s geography.

Digicel’s presence has driven a dramatic expansion in the availability of telecommunications for Papua New Guineans: mobile penetration rates lifted from just 2% in 2006 to 30% today. “

Digicel’s investment in PNG has been generating significant returns: in the year to March 2019, PNG operations brought in revenue of more than US$340 million and made a contribution to group earnings (EBITDA) of $160.5 million. PNG’s contribution was worth 16.7% of total EBITDA and was the largest from a single market within the group. Revenue and profitability increased even as the company lost a half million mobile subscribers, which it says was the result of government policies requiring the registration of SIM cards. “

I used to laugh when people here were saying not many people in png had a tv set without realising they could stream games on their mobiles

I said subs to digicel png

As the tv ratings show games can get over a million people watching
Well even thats not close. subs to PNG Digicel mobile, streaming and internet are approx 2.5mill. There is no way of knowing how many subs the Pay Tv has from what I can see
the Prime Ministers game was freely available on TVWAN, not exclusive to Digicel PTV. Hence the viewing audience.

It’s a big number

Monetising that will be huge for the nrl

Not just tv rights either

PNG will add a huge number to the weekly ratings too way more than nz

Getting blue chip mining companies investing in both other nrl clubs (as png will likely have santos or that sp patroleum)

Who knows maybe even coming on board as naming rights sponsor for the nrl

The png nrl team will be be gateway to those huge global tier one mining companies

I give a similar example of paying more and getting less.
Every time time i go to Aldi (supermarket) I pay more than the last time and most times get less. It's the budget. So the reason I pay more is because I NEED food to live, as lack of food causes series illness and death.

If Foxtel does not get he NRL, it's my opinion that the WHOLE EQUATION of Foxtel/kayo profitability comes into play. A large 'chunk' Fox/kayo revenue and so profit is derided form the NRL. So Foxtel and Kayo will entertain paying MORE for less and with competition. Because without it they will have a SLOW DEATH. The NRL decides exclusivity and distributed to who ever they want. So I am saying the NRL decide exclusivity NOW. To make this a better negotiating position the NRL should open a Project about the viability (the IT cost) of streaming themselves. This put extra pressure upon Fox?Kayo.
So how much does Foxtel/Kayo need the NRL. Well that information is available by viewing numbers ( which the NRL are allowed to see? )

Of course they Foxtel/KAyo can pay up big time ($$$$'s) and then the whole point is mute.

If Foxtel does not come up with the amount the NRL wants, then start taking exclusivity off them, while also reminding them they we can the (NRL) stream it ourselves. Prety sure they will play ball.
They can go back to the 5 live and exclusive, ( leaves 4 FTA games) mantra with SuperSaturday...

Metallica: Whiskey in the Jar (Slane Castle - Meath, Ireland - June 8, 2019)

First I Produced my Pistol,
and then Produced my Rapier
I said Stand and Deliver
Or the Devil it may take yer

Or the NRL go to Fox "pay up or we take the rights off you", Fox calls their bluff and says ok go for it, and now ch9/Stan are bidding against themselves and lowball.

Its quaint that you think there is a TV ratings system in PNG.

All I know is there is continuing infrastructure development going on in PNG.
Foreign investment growing such as China(hence the reason for the Aust Gov/NRL to offset the influence by the new team and the add ons via $600m), creating jobs due to abundant natural resources , mining, oil, gas ,forestry & fisheries.
And Interestingly enough a growing urban middle class a source perhaps of subscriptions for NRL with a PNG team.
Yes PNG has poverty issues 40% living below extreme poverty level. They would be unable to subscribe.
However according to Business Advantage PNG 13/3/24
PNG has a growing middle class driving the housing boom.
We are talking decades and decades away here though, if at all, and certainly not by 2028.

As if the negotiations go like that. You start where both parties want to take it. It then develops to where pressure point might arise... BUT they don't say 'No,' and run off. If Foxtel?Kayo don't have ANY NRL their business is F**ked. The Fox/Kayo customer numbers tell them that...some customers are high value ie they have a Foxtel Box But want the NRL so they pay hand over fist for the minimum package and add sports package , therefore these customers cn be high value $100 plus per month. No NRL can make them pick up Netflix or something else Disney/Prime and a Paramount plus NRL stream account. Don't forget Paramount put in a bid for the AFL, which was the biggest, i think it was $600m pa for the lot- maybe again!

Nor will it go how you claim with them paying 300m to share 5 games with Stan, which also pays 300m for every game.

Fox fought hard for every game and max game exclusivity. They lose that the value drops markedly as that's what drives subscribers.

Well Nine have a sunk cost of $115m anyway, to rap it up to full coverage it would have to pay close to $300 or high $280. Especially as their ( now) $115m deal wont be repeated. As pointed out Foxtel/Kayo pay now $260 pa so with inflation and the NRL product has become the number one total media package Foxtel/Kayo could rightly pay something like $300 or what they have now. I not saying this could be negotiated easily however the figure are their ( paying subscribers and TV views) to support such numbers. OR the 4 FTA and Five exclusive Foxtel/Kayo ( with extra game ) Use this model if Foxtel wont substantially increase dollars by bring in Ten/Paramount for 2FTA, Friday Sunday. That got to sit well for the hard up punters 4 FTA games per round. Two NIne TV and Two Network 10 FTA. All these should be on the table. Their are other ways a new package come into being ie different streamer. The point is the NRL is in a good position to capitalize by keeping the status ( if the pay big) or use exclusivity as the amount of the bid decreases. You can have two streamers, or one full (PayTV) streamer and a partial , say like Stan, if Foxtel dont go as high as the NRL want.

Foxtel's Billion-Dollar Sports Rights Portfolio: Key Details

In a recent statement, Foxtel CEO Patrick Delaney highlighted that Foxtel holds over AUD $1 billion worth of sports broadcasting rights, reinforcing its dominance in Australia’s pay-TV and streaming sports market.

If they Foxtel/Kayo don't have NRL their finished. $340m to $370m pa revenue GONE, like that. How are you going to support a Billion dollars (yearly) sports rights package when number are thin now and take out $340 rev or profit on NRL of $60m pa. Foxtel is finished if they don't have ANY NRL. Whats more the NRL know this by the customer numbers.... So we adjust the media package to suit us and if we determine exclusivity, which it should be anyway. Foxtel/kayo have a fair decent marketabel product, producer wise, even with less exclusivity they will think we can hold of customers. Espeacially if they shut up Vossy, and he inane way of trying to keep the popular teams in the (game) race. Just call the game.
